So I got the design mockup cut out on MDF board and I'm quite happy with the idea, however the execution could be refined. Upon inspection I found that the process of transferring the file and adjusting it for cutting in Corel actually skewed the grid system of the work, leaving some rows of the final product uneven which left the wall disproportionate. I'll have to recut it sometime in the future but for now I'm glad it didn't work as it illuminated some issues with the design. It took almost 2 hours to laser cut and the chance of warping is higher the more lines there are to mess up, so I think I will redesign the wall to be smaller and with less rows. This will hopefully ensure it is easier to install and give me more flexibility to work with multiple forms.

EXHIBITION TASK

Finally got this thing installed. It was a bit of a fiddly system at first, we all had considerations as to where things should go and mine seemed to be quite different from the others so I was worried it might not work in the context of the show. In actuality it turned out great! The works had great synergy with each other, and my work along with Abby’s and Ian’s had a subtle aquatic theme which was nice because it was something for my work to latch onto and feel incorporated. I enjoyed having it against the wall, it really gave the work new meaning and a sense of anxiousness that I hadn’t thought about before. All in all, there was some great discussion and questions from my peers and they’ve told me that this exploration of cultural identity is something they’d be interested in seeing more of so that’s fantastic!

Got the figure spray painted today at the workshop, then took it home for the black coat on all the details. I think it turned out great and I’m looking forward to seeing it tomorrow for the Gallery task!

Finished the design and now I’m all ready to get this guy cut out! It’s been a bit tricky trying to sort it all out but I think the design turned out nicely and I’m excited to paint this thing.

Week 10

Ok so i didn’t get up to much last week, I think I’m experiencing a bit of burn out from things both within and outside of uni. But on the bright side we have the Exhibition task next week week and I’m looking forward to that. I’m thinking of doing a series of ceramic pieces that give reference to indigenous culture, but remain sort of ambiguous in appearance, like they’re from a culture that doesn’t quite exist.

Cultural Identity?

I’ve been struggling to see how I can fit my cultural identity in with my practice, it always seems so radically different from my other works that it just doesn’t seem like I can pursue it right now. Of course that’s what I often say and then it gets pushed back once more, I think now I should just experiment with it and see where it goes. I made some quick sketches in my book to get some ideas on paper, I think this might be an interesting avenue to explore.

IDENTITY QUIZES

I think there’s an idea here somewhere, I always find myself doing these silly quizzes and it always ends up wasting time. I think I can try and capitalize off that time to create a work out of it?
