High-Risk Populations & Coronavirus
I see a lot of people worried about contracting COVID-19. Young, healthy people that generally will/might have already gotten the virus and recover(Ed) just fine. (Yes, you could have already had it and just thought it was the flu or didn't show symptoms.)
But the majority of deaths have been in older populations or those with underlying health issues or compromised immune systems. The fatality rate in these persons has been calculated to around 15%.
We need to be worried about these people.
So how do we protect these populations and slow down the transmission.

DO NOT PANIC
Freaking out does not help anyone. Listen to the science, not the panic. Don't spread misinformation and arm yourself with relevant and useful knowledge.
WASH YOUR HANDS.
This the best defense we have. Coronavirus can only exist in the air for so long and falls down to settle on surfaces. We touch a lot of surfaces in a day and can spread the virus to everything we handle. Wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds. Rub all surfaces of you hands with soap and water. Rinse well.
IF YOU ARE SICK, STAY HOME
As we know, coronavirus can be spread for 14+ days following exposure. We can not always know if we are infected as some people will never show symptoms or haven't showed symptoms yet. However, if you are feeling poorly then stay home. (This applies for the flu as well.) You do not need to rush to an Emergency Room where at-risk persons may be unless you are having an EMERGENCY. Normally healthy persons with a fever, cough, body ache, etc. are not having an emergency.
DO NOT RUSH GETTING BETTER
Any illness takes time for your body to recover from. You should at least be fever-free WITHOUT medication for 24 hours before thinking about going about your daily activities. Even after you start to feel better you are contagious. Keep that in mind- you can and will still make others sick. Do not take enough medication to "power through". This only puts more people at risk.
DO NOT WASTE MASKS
Wasting masks could lead to issues for healthcare workers. There is already starting to be shortages at hospitals. There are only a few specific times that wearing a mask is appropriate. Hand washing is far more effective as far as protection.
In general, masks are for those already sick. The mask prevents sneezing and coughing from spraying the virus into the air (where it doesn't stay if you remember from above). If you're sick, stay home. If you must seek medical help or someone is caring for you, wear a mask in their presence.
Masks worn by caregivers are only meant for those within close proximity to an infected person . Very close proximity. And the patient should wear one too.
This is how you can keep your loved ones safe. Five things. You can count them one one hand- after you go wash it.

if your family is low income, you can take your sat for free – twice!
and as a bonus, you can waive 4 college application fees. so like if a college you wanna apply to has a $20 fee, you can use one of your freebies to not have to pay that. four times. that means you can apply to at least 4 colleges (more if you can find ones with free applications) for no cost at all.
check in with your guidance counselor and see if you qualify – at my school, we qualify if we’re on free or reduced price lunch. my waiver had 2 free act’s included too.

6 Things People Don't Always Tell You About Studying
1. you ace tests by overlearning. you should know your notes/flashcards/definitions basically by heart. if someone asks you about a topic when you’re away from class or your notes and you can answer them in a thorough and and accurate answer, then you’re good, you know the material.
2. if you don’t understand something, it will end up on the test. so just don’t disregard and hope that this specific topic won’t be on the test. give it more attention, help, and practice. find a packet of problems on that one concept and don’t stop until you finish it and know it the best.
3. sometimes you just need that Parental Push. you know in elementary school, they would tell you “ok now it’s time for you to do your homework! you have a project coming up, start looking for a topic now!” ONE of your teachers might be like this. be thankful for it and follow their advice! these teachers are the best at always keeping you on track with their calendar. if not a teacher, then have one of your friends be that person that can keep you accountable for the things you promised you would do.
4. you just need to kick your own ass. seriously. i know it sucks and its hard to study for two things at once. BUT. I DONT CARE IF IT’S HARD. you need to do it and at least do it to get it over with because you can’t keep putting things off. If you do, you will eventually run out of time and you will hate yourself. force yourself to do it. i made myself sign up for june ACT even though there’s finals because if i didn’t, i probably never would. like do i think i’m gonna be ready in one month? probably not, SO I BETTER GET ON IT AND START STUDYING!
5. do homework even if it doesn’t count. if you actually try on it, then you will actually do so much better on the tests, it’s like magic.
6. literally just get so angry about procrastinating that you make yourself start that assignment. I know how hard it is to kick the procrastination habit. I have to procrastinate. So I make myself start by thinking about my deadlines way early. I think, “oh i have a presentation in three weeks (but it really takes 2 weeks to do), i’ll be good and start today.” when that doesn’t happen, you say you’ll do it tomorrow, and this happens for like the next four days. I get so mad at myself for not starting when i am given a new chance to do so with every passing day. By that time, you actually have exactly how much time you need for it AND you were able to procrastinate the same way you usually do ;)

honestly my number one piece of advice for students is to like. be pragmatic about studying. because lbr doing your headings in perfect calligraphy with a £5 brush pen isn’t going to improve your grades. re-writing and re-writing your notes until they’re instagram-worthy isn’t going to help you retain the information. planning in a £30 bullet journal which you’ll then feel pressured into making really aesthetic spreads for when a £5 planner would do the same job isn’t going to make you a better student. yes, 100% take pride in your notes and by all means treat yourself to nice stationery every now and again but pls don’t waste your time and money trying to reach some unattainable studyblr goals.

The most fascinating part to me about studyblr isn’t the unique stories and backgrounds each of you have, though that has always been important and amazing. It’s the futures each of you look forward to: the doctors, the translators, the writers, the teachers – and notice I don’t say “aspiring.” You all are here because you aspire, but when you combine that ambition with discipline, your work pays off. You aren’t just on a never-ending path of studying, you are on a path to a goal that opens up many more paths. In even so little as 5 years I could be talking to a medblr that is conducting their first surgeries, saving their first lives. In 10, the high school freshmen interested in social work could be keeping kids off of the streets or teaching their favorite subjects to kids just like them. And the greatest part is, because of the people that you are, it won’t just be a could, a what if. It is a will be. I am not only excited for the work you will do, I am excited for the person you are and will be. I am proud of you.

HEY this is a reminder that failing tests and missing classes are okay. And that unfinished journals and planners are okay. Cheap stationery, messy notes, they’re all okay. Don’t stress about these stuff too much.
