Here’s What Emmys Fashion Looked Like in the Year 2000
This Sunday, Sept. 18, Hollywood's finest will gather for the Emmy Awards in a no-doubt impressive parade of tastefully styled designer gowns. But not too many years ago, things were different. A-list actresses wore cheesy cupcake gowns with layers of froofy tulle. Music icons wore spangled jeans. Lisa Kudrow turned up in an iridescent bedazzled dress that looked suspiciously like the one we begged our moms to buy us from the DeLiA*s catalog. In celebration of the festivities, take a look back with us to the turn of the century and all the fashion — and, sometimes, stars — we forgot we used to love (sorry, Keri Russell). Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest for nonstop inspiration delivered fresh to your feed, every day.

Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt at the 2000 Emmy Awards
This writer is now, and has always been, Team Angelina. (I'm a brunette, I have to support my people.) But seeing this photo, in which AniPitt look so young, so un-Botoxed, so in love, Jen resplendent in Prada and a prissy little baguette bag, Brad tieless in his dopey puka-shell necklace — it's enough to make a girl switch teams.

Lisa Kudrow looks lovely in the iridescent dress — somehow simultaneously purple, gray, and pink —that you wanted to wear to prom so bad, you circled the Jessica McClintock ad three times. Meanwhile, her husband ruined a perfectly nice suit with the sunglasses of a Meatpacking District bouncer.

Lucy Liu in a naked dress at the 2000 Emmy Awards
You thought Kim K and J.Lo invented the naked dress? Hell, no. And neither did Lucy Liu, but we do give her props for ripping a page from Cher's ’70s Bob Mackie playbook with this exquisite dress. Just imagine, there was a time when we weren't yet sick of these...

Halle Berry wears a black ball gown at the 2000 Emmy Awards
Halle took home the prize for her portrayal of legendary entertainer Dorothy Dandridge, and is maybe the one person who ever looked good in one of these pouffy tulle wedding-cake dresses. But remind beauty to never again bring back the white-highlighter-around-the-eye-socket look, please.

We know most people will tell you not to get Antonio Banderas's name tattooed on your arm, because even 20-year marriages that made us believe in love can fall apart. But we say, “Eff it.” You only live once, and you might as well let your hot hubs feel you up in public while you’re at it.

Keri Russell in a beaded gown at the 2000 Emmy Awards
The world was so enamored of Keri Russell for two brief, shining years just before the century turned that her getting a slightly shorter haircut was actual front page news. Kind of hard to understand now when you look at her, in all her very pretty and tastefully dressed perfection. We'll always have her to thank for making us apply to NYU.

Calista Flockhart in a red dress at the 2000 Emmy Awards
Did you know that there was a time when people wanted to watch shows about really uptight lawyers with perpetually pursed lips? Did you further know that more people saw the Dancing Baby on said show than saw it on the Internet, which was barely a thing in 1997? Did you know that Calista Flockhart inspired the flamenco lady emoji? True story.

Cher wears a white blouse and glittery pants at the 2000 Emmy Awards
Lucy Liu may have stolen Cher's look, but she will never steal Cher's thunder, for Cher is already light-years ahead of the curve with her opulent earth-mother jewelry and glittery pants. Years later, T-Pain would rip off her “Believe”-era use of Autotune, and a whole slew of new starlets would embrace the naked dress, proving that Cher is the No. 1 boss in the game.

How come no one invites Geena Davis to things anymore? She's a winning actress, looks so enthused to be there, and wears trippy-ass dresses with flip-flops and an impressive hairpiece on the red carpet. We forgot that we love her.

Meet Shannon Hoey, the Queen of Vintage Couture
It’s Vintage Week at Yahoo Style! In honor of our favorite environmentally-friendly way to make sure you’re never wearing the same outfit as anyone else, we’re bringing you insider intel on the best vintage — what to look for, where to find it, and how to make the most money when selling yours. Stay tuned all week for more.

The rental archive floor at New York Vintage.
Fashion insider, like fashionista, is one of those terms that gets bandied about all too often, rarely meaning much more than ‘once quaffed Champagne next to so-and-so.’
With Shannon Hoey, the force behind the museum-quality clothing collection known as New York Vintage, the term actually fits.
Pieces from her collection have made appearances in films like The Great Gatsby or A Winter’s Tale and on television shows like Boardwalk Empire and she’s dressed everyone from Beyonce to Miley and Lupita.
Related: How To Do Naked Black Tie Like Miley and Rihanna
Hoey, whose business is located in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, looks unassuming in her casual uniform of jeans and a cashmere sweater, but when she talks about seaming and craftsmanship, it’s immediately clear she knows her fashion history inside and out. She can tell “100%” the difference between a masterfully-made 1920s gown, and a present-day knockoff, she says. “Women used to go blind in the 1920s sewing beads onto dresses. And you’ll see, every now and then, a bead will be a different color. That’s how you know it’s hand-finished, and not machine-finished.”
Tumblr media
1920s dresses by unknown designers.
Hoey came into fashion through a side door, after studying art history and working with her husband—who was raised in the antiques business—sorting through vast estate sales. “We were on an estate and I discovered this trunk full of the most pristine 1940s hats. And to me they were works of art, these beautiful, architectural pieces. So I began collecting, and eventually decided to jump in with both feet, opening a retail store.” She opened her shop in 2001.

While some might choose to double down on selling popular Pucci dresses, Hoey developed a passion for the rare birds—like a 1958 Christian Dior gown designed by Yves Saint Laurent—that were investment pieces, things you just couldn’t sell. (If you did, says Hoey, the gown appraises at $8000-10,000.) And so a business was born. Hoey now rents out everything from 1880s whale-boned corsets to Edwardian top hats, flapper-style gowns and statement costume jewelry from the 1980s. Price? Expensive. The cost of collectible couture has soared to new heights lately. “These are truly works of art,” she notes. Viewings, naturally, are by appointment only— and you might have to wear white gloves as you peruse since the oil from hands can ruin the more delicate pieces.

There are indeed other ‘prop houses’ in Manhattan, where a film’s wardrobe team might borrow ‘1970s garb in bulk. The difference between those businesses and New York Vintage is that Hoey has curated a top of the line collection that’s as fitting on the red carpet as it is in a film close up or an editorial in a fashion magazine. It’s even good enough for Michelle Obama, who borrowed a 1950s Norman Norelli gown for the annual Christmas in Washington concert in 2010.

“You can be sitting in a taxi reading an editorial with a New York Vintage piece in it, when a bus pulls up to you with some big campaign—Estee Lauder or L’Oreal—with some of our jewelry, larger than life, and then you go to the movies and the lead is wearing one of our dresses,” Hoey laughs, marveling at the reach of her family-run business. Her office is adjacent to the second floor loft that houses the collection, and next door to that is a nursery for her three children, seven and under.
“Early on,” says Hoey, “I’d take my children on these buying trips to Europe. Which takes passion, and fortitude, and probably a little bit of craziness. I’d have one of them in the carrier, and one holding my hand and I’d be saying ‘How much for the tiara?’” When Galliano stopped by the store, “I was like, I’m sorry, the baby has to eat! Go about your business!”

What Hoey and her team offer (along with her husband, she currently has 7 employees) is ultimately an encyclopedic knowledge of fashion history.
Need an ostrich capelet or a chain-mail dress by Paco Rabane, stat? If price is no object, New York Vintage has you covered —and you just might bump into Rihanna in the dressing room.

A Model Walked Around Half-Naked in Painted-on Pants and No One Even Noticed
yahoo
I grew up just outside of Manhattan and my father always told me when I went with him into the city to never look up. He said that if you look up, you’ll immediately be labeled as a tourist. Because of this early lesson, to this day, I walk around New York City with blinders on, staring straight ahead until I reach my destination. Clearly, there are plenty of people just like me because as a new social experiment reveals, New Yorkers are oblivious.
Model Pranksters TV painted a woman’s legs to look like she was wearing jeans and then she walked around the streets of midtown. Body art company The Body Of Art did such a convincing job of making the model appear as if she has pants on, when in reality, she does not.
The brave lady, Leah Jung, rode the subway, strolled through Times Square, walked around the garment district, and even went shopping. While it’s surprising that no one notices that she’s bare down below, it’s even crazier that the paint doesn’t rub off when she’s making her way through the congested crowds of Times Square.
At Forever21, Jung asked a sales associate where she could get a similar pair super skinnies. “A friend of mine got me these jeans as a gift and she said she got them here,” she said. The employee, very up close and personal, responds, “You can check downstairs.” At McDonald’s, a little girl’s face is level with the model’s butt. It’s unclear whether she walks away because she’s the first one to actually notice the woman is naked (kids are extremely observant), or maybe her Happy Meal is just ready.
Funny enough, for April Fools’ Day in 2013 American Eagle released a prank promotional video advertising a spray-on jean that would be “contoured through the thigh, knee, and ankle… that fits like second skin.”
So even if the unspoken rule of the streets is to be blissfully unaware of your surroundings, maybe you should snap out of it every once in a while. You never know if the next viral stunt is walking right beside you.

"Be Normal, Just Don't Go Normcore!" Vintage Experts Share Their Style Philosophies
It’s Vintage Week at Yahoo Style! In honor of our favorite environmentally-friendly way to make sure you’re never wearing the same outfit as anyone else, we’re bringing you insider intel on the best vintage — what to look for, where to find it, and how to make the most money when selling yours. For the fashion-lover, shopping for vintage clothing is an art. Finding the perfect piece is akin to striking gold. You feel connected to history and better yet, your one-of-a-kind piece will most likely never lead to being fashion twins with someone at a party. To get the secrets, inspiration, and expertise behind the magic of vintage clothing, photographer Joel Barhamand turned to the ladies of Beacon’s Closet in Brooklyn, New York. The store features everything from 1970’s department store labels to last season’s Marc Jacobs, and their selection is carefully curated by the storekeepers. We asked six of them to share their best style tricks and life philosophies.

What inspires me the most is 90's couture. So like...Versace, Pierre Balmain, Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, Chanel and the list goes on. I watch a lot of old TV shows with mom too so I'm always inspired by the glamour and poise women exuded back in like 50's and 60's. I think my 60's hair is the best representation of that.
Tumblr media
Kristen Knick
"The worst thing people can do when dressing themselves is dressing 'on trend'- or whatever... Do people even still do that? I don't really know. Everyone is cool and should just be themselves. Be a weirdo, but don't try to be. Be 'normal' but please don't go 'norm-core' you know?"
Tumblr media
Jeanette Converse
"I think every woman should own a kimono. They are perfect for just lounging around in, as well as making a little black dress look fancier. So versatile, can look good on any body shape, and let's face it, those sleeves is just too cool!"
Tumblr media
Christine Costello
"If you want the distressed look in your jeans and don't have it in you to distress them through good old fashioned wear, then buy some vintage denim, don't buy $200 new "distressed" denim with inauthentically shredded knees and dirt stains. It's not cool, it's absurd. "
Tumblr media
Megan Browning
"Certain people appear to be very purchased. People with money seem to have the least amount of personal style, in my opinion. You can tell from a mile away if someone is trying really hard to appear a certain way.. I think someone with 'good style' dresses for themselves, primarily. "
Tumblr media
Kelly Callahan
"I'm somewhere between Woodstock and a Guns and Roses concert, with some sequins thrown in there.. "
Tumblr media
I love to mix my designer with my vintage. A vintage coat with a designer dress. Or a pair of designer heels with a Vintage dress. It's my favorite combination.
Tumblr media
Who am I to judge how other people dress? Style is an artist expression of who you are. I believe everyone is a blank canvas and you are capable of painting it the way you see fit. There is no such thing as a mistake. Because what is out of style today could be in style tomorrow.
Tumblr media
"I believe in buying all that my little heart desires. So what if I have 20 black dresses with only slight variations to them. I know the difference."
Tumblr media
"Everyone, when first introduced to style and fashion, go through a period of exploring and cultivating they're own personal look. And 5 years later may see a photo and say "what was I thinking?". But those moments are what lead up to you being comfortable with your personal aesthetic."
Tumblr media
"I'm inspired by the masculine and the feminine so I like to keep my look as neutral as I can. Timelessness is of the essence, or whatever, so I keep my look as straight forward as possible. My mom has always inspired me. She's kind of got a Woody Allen character thing going. I might even go as far to say that she's a dreamy mix between Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton."
Tumblr media
Kirsten Knick
"My mom and I watched Melrose Place when I was a kid and I think those scandalous babes started me off on being a done up villainess. We were the less wealthy girls living in a posh town so we'd come across the second hands of Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Jil Sander etc. A pretty fortunate situation."
Tumblr media
"Funniest thing I've seen in the store... Hm, probably a near physical fight over a used Coach bag. People are serious when it comes to 'stuff'... "
Tumblr media
"Other people's interpretations of me I've gotten are 'whimsical, folky, otherworldly, and witchy. I never consciously plan my style. It's always based on how i'm feeling that particular day, which sounds more serious than it is. I've always felt like clothing should be regarded as lighthearted, playful, and festive. People take the word 'fashion' very seriously nowadays. It's all about being seen; I particularly enjoy dressing up when I'm just hanging out by myself or walking around the city."
Tumblr media
"I like a lot of designers from the late 70's/ early 80's, particularly this guy named Koos Van Den Akker. So I have accumulated a bunch of his stuff. I've been known to have a mini freak out when that kind of stuff comes into Beacons. I have a patchwork jacket of his that is very special. "
Tumblr media
"I have something called synesthesia, which made me very sensitive to color and texture, even as a child. It still affects my relationship to clothing. My brain gets intensely stimulated just going into a thrift store or putting together an outfit. That's something that will never go away!"
Tumblr media
"I like to pretend I'm working at a circus, that gives it a different framework. The funniest thing I found in a buy was a homemade bong made out of seashells."
Tumblr media
"My personal style is Bob Dylan meets Joan Baez meets English teacher"
Tumblr media
"I think everyone looks like they're up to some kind of interesting when they're wearing a trench coat."
Tumblr media
"The most common mistake people make in dressing themselves is not removing the animal hair from their clothes. Otherwise, don't wear clothes that don't fit you. While oversized clothing can work as a look, undersized clothing cannot."
Tumblr media
"I would say my style is one part Japanese kawaii, one part Glinda the good witch, and one part rainbow unicorn magic. There are elements of both light and darkness to it."
Tumblr media
"I think the most common mistake people make when styling their outfits in the morning, is that they worry too much about what's in style, or about who's going to like this. I find my best outfits manifest when I feel comfortable, and just wear things that make me happy."
Tumblr media
"My favorite thing to do when I was little, was to put on my mom's old prom dress and some of her high heels (that were way to big for me)."
Tumblr media
"Funniest thing I’ve ever seen go down in the store? Two regulars throw down for designer goods."
Tumblr media
"The one thing everyone should own is a badass biker jacket"

The Normal Girl’s Guide to Buying Vintage Denim Online
Tumblr media
Photo: Getty Images
It’s Vintage Week at Yahoo Style! In honor of our favorite environmentally-friendly way to make sure you’re never wearing the same outfit as anyone else, we’re bringing you insider intel on the best vintage — what to look for, where to find it, and how to make the most money when selling yours. Stay tuned all week for more.
In a denim age cluttered with four-way stretch and non-ironic jeggings, it’s logical that we would start craving something a little (or a lot) more lo-fi. This year, scoring a pair of vintage Levi’s 501s from the early 1990s — in all their high-waisted, non-stretch, mom-jean glory — feels like the only way to move your denim wardrobe forward.
But here’s the thing: Unless you’re an obsessive, vintage shopping gets old as you get old. At 32, I simply don’t have the patience to rummage around most thrift shops looking for that one pair of perfect-fitting jeans in just the right wash. The good news is that it’s easier than ever to shop for vintage denim online, where shops like Re/Done, Denim Refinery, and even Urban Outfitters offer plenty of old-school styles, sans the musty smell of the vintage store. The bad news is that it’s still hard to find a pair that fits, especially if you’re not model-skinny. As a size 10, I’ve spent the last three months searching the web for just the right pair of vintage 501s. Here are my tips for finding yours, no matter your body type:
Get over the fact that you’re going to have to size up. A lot. I have jeans that are a size 28, I have jeans that are a size 32. At my current weight, I average a denim size 30. My actual waist measures 31 or 32 inches, depending on how many cookies I ate yesterday. The Levi’s I ended up buying are marked 34, and while I do have a little room to breathe, they aren’t huge on me. Every site handles the sizing of vintage jeans differently: Some go by your actual waist size, some go by modern sizing, some go by the original sizing. Your best bet is to read their size chart and pay more attention to it than to whatever size you think you’re supposed to be.
You’ll probably have to buy more than one pair. Even if the waist size is right, there may be other things that you don’t love about the pair you’ve ordered. I bought and returned five pairs of jeans before finding the right $140 style on Denim Refinery. This can get pricey when you factor in shipping fees. (And many of these retailers don’t offer full refunds, just exchanges.) If you’re worried about incurring costs but still want to try buying jeans online, I would start with Urban Outfitters. Their vintage Levi’s 501s and 505s are $59 a pair, and they come in S-XL. I suggest ordering two “sizes” — I did L and XL — and seeing what you get. While neither pair was quite right, they were super easy to return. I simply dropped them off at my local Urban, and my credit card was refunded within a day.
Consider taking them to a tailor. In fashion, it’s sacrilegious to tailor selvage denim. I say, who cares? If you find a pair that gapes a bit at the waist but makes your butt look great, have them taken in. After all, the real reason we love these jeans is that they do wonders for the derrière. So forget about silly sartorial rules.
If you’re really broke, look to Etsy or eBay. Searching eBay for a pair of vintage Levi’s is nearly as laborious as tracking down a pair in real life, but you can get some great deals that make it worth a look for those with patience. I’d also suggest searching Etsy, where stores like HeathersHandss offer all sizes and colors of vintage Levi’s for $50 a pop.
Let Levi’s do the work for you. If you’re into the vintage look but the guidelines I’ve just outlined sound exhausting and not worth your time, Levi’s 501 CT jeans might be your best option. For 98 bucks, you can get a pair of 501s that have been tapered, for a more modern twist.

Colton Haynes on ‘Arrow,’ Abercrombie & Fitch, and Spoofing Jennifer Lawrence
Photography Ryan Pfluger Styling Christopher Kim Grooming Kumi Craig
Colton Haynes calls me at 1:30 in the afternoon, and it sounds like he’s just woken up, which apparently he has. “I haven’t had any coffee,” he says, apologizing for the gravel in his voice. One can only imagine how Haynes, the  breakout star of the CW’s Arrow and the new face of Diesel, spends a rare night off in Manhattan. I check his Instagram for clues and am surprised to find a time-stamped photo of his smiling face that he sent out to his 1.6 million followers late last night with the caption: “Best night ever at Marie’s Crisis NYC.”
To be clear: Marie’s Crisis is a subterranean piano bar in the West Village, a dive where you’re more likely to spot the 1987 cast of A Chorus Line enjoying a drunken sing-a-long than the 26-year-old actor with Hollywood’s most talked about chin. “I’ve never even heard of a place like that,” Haynes says of Marie’s Crisis. “A few of my friends were like, ‘Let’s go!’ I said, ‘Sweet.’”
Do you know any show tunes?
“I know all of them. But I let my friends take the wheel. I just kind of hung back and watched everyone else. They were having too much fun.”
When you think about it, it makes sense that Haynes would be up for anything. There’s nothing about this kid’s gosh-wow rise in Hollywood that seems planned out. He may play a superhero on TV, but his own origin story is just as compelling. Haynes was raised on a farm in Kansas. “I grew up in a town of 650 people,” he says. “There was a bar, a liquor store, a breakfast place. That was it. We didn’t have a gas station.” In eighth or ninth grade, Haynes got a job washing dishes at the town bar, where his mom waited tables.
The town was conservative, small, and perhaps small-minded. Haynes’s acting opportunities consisted of playing Snoopy in the school production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. His parents, both hippies, had long since split up. Desperate to stretch his legs, Haynes moved to Florida to live with his sister (who was in the military). “I wanted to see a different side of the world,” he explains. “I don’t know. I was a mature kid. We all kind of did our own thing.” A few months later, a friend snapped some shots of Haynes on the beach and sent them to modeling agencies in New York. A year later his chiseled jaw was splashed across shopping bags at Abercrombie Kids.
The transition was awkward to say the least. “The first time I went to the agency — it sounds ridiculous, but they said, ‘Go into the bathroom and work on your faces.’ I didn’t understand what that meant.” Haynes may have been green, but he wasn’t stupid. Noticing he wasn’t the tallest dude in the room, he went the full MacGyver. “I would wrap socks and underwear in duct tape and put it in the back of my boots before casting. Then I was six-foot-one. No one knew the difference.” He settled into one of those crappy model apartments with bunk beds in downtown Manhattan.
Like in Zoolander?
“Wasn’t Zoolander a little classier?” he says with a laugh. “They were driving around in Mercedes and having gasoline fights. We were starving and trying to find our way around the city.” He moved to L.A. after just seven months.
Haynes has what can only be described as beginner’s luck. His very first go-see had been for Abercrombie (nailed it); his first TV audition was for CSI: Miami (boom). He played a kid who’d tried to commit a double suicide with his girlfriend. “I didn’t know what the hell I was doing,” admits Haynes, who had never appeared onscreen before. He didn’t work for the next year save for an appearance on an episode of The Hills.
Fast forward to now. Haynes is everywhere. On billboards for Nicola Formichetti’s revamped Diesel (shot by Nick Knight). In Abercrombie’s “Making of a Star” campaign shot by Bruce Weber. In the upcoming disaster flick San Andreas opposite Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson. And yet it’s important to remember: The thing that got everyone talking about him? The CW’s Arrow? Haynes isn’t the star. He’s the star’s sidekick, a petty thief named Roy Harper, who in the last year has acquired superhuman strength (don’t ask), a snug red leather costume, and a badass new nickname, Arsenal. When Arrow appeared to die in December’s midseason finale, more than one fan site gleefully wondered (hoped?) if the show would be renamed Arsenal. “I guess we’ll see when the title card hits in January…” Haynes teases.
How does Arsenal’s costume compare to clothes you wore in your modeling career? “I never wore a lot of clothes in my modeling career,” he says with a laugh. “It’s nice to actually wear clothes.”
It’s highly doubtful a network would relaunch a show midstream. But Haynes is smart to capitalize on the heat, using social media to build his brand — not by fronting but by being himself, which is an unabashed goofball. He’s one of those absurdly handsome actors who refers to himself as a “big nerd,” but he actually has the photos to back it up. When Jennifer Lawrence drew flak for wearing a puffy white Dior gown to the Golden Globes last year, Haynes didn’t miss a beat, wrapping himself in a comforter, snapping a selfie, and tweeting, “#GoldenGlobes were a blast.” For Halloween last year, he dressed as Princess Fiona from Shrek — with a giant prosthetic nose and a full face of green makeup.
“Shrek is one of the greatest movies,” he says with a laugh, adding, “I like to transform and do things that are fun. It was the coolest costume I’ve ever done. I just like not doing what people say I should do.”
After spending the holidays in New York, Haynes is due back in Vancouver to finish Season 3 of Arrow, where — he tells me — he leaves most of the stunts to the professionals. “When it comes to trying to jump out of windows and doing all the crazy stuff, I don’t want to be the person that steps in and tries to make everyone’s job more difficult. I just do the dialogue.” He thinks on this, then goes for the self-deprecating joke: “I’m my stunt double’s dialogue double.”

Rihanna Wears Vêtements by Vetements in Paris
For someone who’s naked as often as Rihanna, it’s no small feat to be so groundbreakingly stylish. The CFDA wasn’t kidding when it named her Fashion Icon of the Year in June 2014; she accepted the honor by showing up in this.
While we’ve watched her every move for a decade, that moment was a game changer—and she’s stepped up her style ever since. Nowadays, whether she’s working emerald fur Versace, a “cake dress” that actually looks delectable, or not much at all, “The way I dress just depends on how I feel,” she says. “I never have to psych myself up. Usually it just feels like it works.”

Rihanna wears a Vetements shearling coat, Vetements turtleneck, black leggings, and Chanel boots on Jan. 18, 2016 in Paris, France.
Rumors are back on about Rihanna allegedly spending some one-on-one time with eternal Oscar nom Leonardo DiCaprio—but for now, let’s just focus on the insanely cozy winter lewk she sported on Monday, shall we? The pop star went out for dîner in Paris wearing a shearling-lined leather coat and oversized gray turtleneck sweater, both by Vetements. She kept things simple on the bottom in a pair of black leggings and matching OTK Chanel boots—proving, once and for all, that leggings most definitely CAN be pants. Well, as long as you’re Ri-Ri, anyway. (Photo: AKMGSI)

Rihanna wears a peacoat, culotte jumpsuit, socks, pumps, and baseball cap on Jan. 7, 2016 in New York City.
Rihanna loves making a statement with her footwear, and her most recent appearance was no exception. The super star was seen out and about in New York sporting a classy navy peacoat-and-culottes look, accessorized with a “dad hat” (i.e, a baseball cap) and some pointy white pumps and matching ankle socks. Though heels and socks is a look used frequently in editorial, it’s not often we see someone actually trying it out IRL. Though naturally, if someone’s going to be bold enough to pull it off, it’s Rihanna. (PS—her “I Came to Break Hearts” cap is by Nasaseasons.) (Photo: Getty)

Rihanna wears a shearling coat, ripped jeans, and lace boots on Nov. 21, 2015 in New York City.
After what seemed like an extended summer, the temperature has finally begun to drop in New York—but Rihanna’s not letting a little chill get in the way of her fashion game. The megastar wore a long, cozy-looking shearling coat, paired with torn jeans and some super sexy, black lacy boots. With her hair in a sleek bun and neutral makeup, she looked casual, yet put-together. And take a tip from Ri-Ri: Fall/winter is the perfect time of year to let your footwear do the talking. Rihanna wears a black slip dress and robe to unveil the album art for ANTI at MAMA Gallery on Oct. 7, 2015 in Los Angeles.
Fashion month may be officially over, but there’s no slowing down Rihanna. The singer showed up at the MAMA Gallery in LA on Wednesday to unveil the album art for her upcoming album, “ANTI.” Created by Israeli Artist Roy Nachum, the artwork includes a photo of Rihanna as a small child. But Rih dressed decidedly adult for the occasion, wearing a skimpy black mini slip dress, chunky choker, hoop earrings, minimalist sandal heels, and a silky floor-length robe. The whole thing had a very pajama-feel to it. She finished off the look with her hair half-up in knots and black lipstick.

Rihanna wears a Dior Haute Couture coat at the Eiffel tower on Oct. 4, 2015 in Paris, France.
Even superstars like being touristy sometimes! For a brief visit to the Eiffel Tower in the midst of Paris Fashion Week, Rihanna wore a voluminous coat by Dior Haute Couture. The bold and bright mismatched stripes made a striking statement over her crisp white button-down, navy mini, and thigh-high patent leather boots.
Tumblr media
Rihanna wears Christian Dior at the Vogue Paris 95th Anniversary Party on Oct. 3, 2015 in Paris, France.
For Vogue Paris’s 95th anniversary party, Ri-Ri went for a floaty, sheer dress by her go-to designer (and part-time employer!) Christian Dior. The look was so transparent that both her nipple ring and white underwear were visible underneath—though, this being Rihanna, we doubt it was unintentional. How cute and comfy does she look?
Tumblr media
Rihanna wears Christian Dior on Oct. 3, 2015 in Paris, France.
The pop star continued her Dior tour on Saturday, sporting a frilly, baby pink mini dress by the label. She accessorized with a matching Dior chain purse, oversized pink sunglasses, and pointy white pumps. It’s a super-sweet look for the singer, who’s known better for showing skin and starting trends than channeling a retro Barbie doll—but, as always, she pulls it off.
Tumblr media
Rihanna wears Christian Dior at the Christian Dior spring 2016 show on Oct. 2, 2015 in Paris, France.
For her first show of fashion month, Rihanna wore a coral cape coat by Dior, paired with a snakeskin bag and PVC boots with clear block heels. From the label’s fall 2015 couture collection, the statement coat featured a knit cowl neck and one fur sleeve. Ri-Ri wore her hair up and in curls, letting her outfit (and flawless face) do the talking.
Tumblr media
Rihanna wearing a dress with pants at her Fashion Week party on Sept. 10, 2015 in New York City.
Even though she didn’t attend a single show at New York Fashion Week, Rihanna chose to throw a kick-off party of sorts in the middle of Manhattan, attended by celebs like Gigi Hadid, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, and Pharrell Williams. For her hosting duties, Ri-Ri wore a white spaghetti strap dress over black pants, with furry heel sandals, multiple necklaces and bangle bracelets, and bright blue lipstick. When it comes to fashion, this woman has zero fear.
Tumblr media
Rihanna wears a mini dress and strappy heels on Sept. 7, 2015 in New York City.
This is how Rihanna does dinner dates. For a night at New York restaurant The Spotted Pig, the pop star wore a navy mini dress with a plunging neckline, paired with heeled sandals with strings that wrapped all the way up to her thighs. It only takes one statement accessory can elevate an entire look!
Tumblr media
Rihanna wears a lacy pink mini dress at the RiRi by Rihanna fragrance unveiling at Macy's on Aug. 31, 2015 in Brooklyn, New York.
Ri-Ri channeled a 1980s Whitney Houston for her fragrance launch at Macy’s in Brooklyn, wearing a fluorescent pink, off-the-shoulder mini dress with puffy sleeves by Vivienne Westwood Red Label, matching pink Louboutin pumps, and a high, curly updo. Such a playful, princessy look—and one that only Rihanna could pull off.
Tumblr media
Rihanna in a thrift store dress and Versace necklace.
Talk about high low. Rihanna stepped out in Manhattan wearing a dress that could have possibly been plucked from a bin at a thrift store. The ankle-length green floral frock most likely was discarded from the set of "Seinfeld" and somehow made its way into the pop star's closet. She paired the the muumuu with white slip-on sneakers, a turquoise bucket backpack, and a green choker with Versace wrapped around her neck.
Tumblr media
Rihanna in aqua culottes and a gray T-shirt.
For a night out on the town, Rihanna perfected the New York City cool girl uniform. Wearing a pair of turquoise culottes, she showed off her tummy by knotting a heather grey T-shirt and accessorized her stomach with a gold body chain. For an extra pop of color, she slipped on some hot pink heels and matched her lipstick.
Tumblr media
Rihanna in a Dior denim dress on June 16, 2015 in Tokyo, Japan.
As much as she loves wearing baggy pants and oversized coats, Rihanna still loves a really prim and feminine look – but always with an edge– like this Dior a-line short sleeved denim dress.
Tumblr media
Rihanna gets comfy at the airport
Rihanna has the best airport style out of all the celebrities. This is not an opinion but a fact. It's clear that her number one concern while traveling is comfort, which is there the oversized coats (that double as blankets), practical carry-ons, and super comfy sneakers come into play. She just gets it right, every time.
Tumblr media
Rihanna proves that pants don't matter.
Rihanna's redefined a wardrobe staple of many young women: the going out shirt. On Monday, she partied in Los Angeles wearing a t-shirt printed with Catwoman sucking on a lollipop. And that's about it! She did wear a handful of necklaces and some strappy sandals, but the bottom line is the new going out shirt doesn't need pants in da club.
Tumblr media
Rihanna wears a sequined jacket, Puma boxer-briefs, and boyfriend jeans on May 25, 2015 in New York City.
You know those signs that say, "No shirt, no shoes, no service?" They aren't hanging in the window of New York's Da Silvano, because it's kind of assumed that you're wearing those things on 6th Avenue. But not if you're Rihanna! Who needs a shirt when you have abs like that?
Tumblr media
Rihanna wears a top and sweatpants by Puma on May 17, 2015 in New York City.
In December, Rihanna was named the new creative director of Puma. If anyone could help them compete with Nike and Adidas, it's Rihanna. Right? So now she wears it all the time, including this head-to-toe look she wore in Soho in May.
Tumblr media
Rihanna wears camouflage and a headscarf on May 15, 2015 in New York City.
Despite wearing more camo at once than most humans own in a lifetime, Rihanna did not blend into the Bowery Hotel in New York in May.
Tumblr media
Rihanna in red, white and blue.
To debut her new song, American Oxygen at the March Madness Music Festival in Indianapolis, Rihanna wowed in her own version of red (belted logo sweats) white (knotted crop top) and blue (a fur coat dotted with gobstopper-size stones).
Tumblr media
Rihanna in Moschino.
In a powder blue Moschino jacket and matching shorts, Rihanna was ready for Spring—and ready to relive her epic April Fool’s Day pranking of Jimmy Kimmel.
Tumblr media
Rihanna in sweats.
As usual, the singer elevates her sweats with accessories. “It all started in dance rehearsal,” she told Vogue of this wardrobe staple. “When you’re on tour, you go to rehearse wearing sweats and sneaks. Then you practice your song in the heels you are going to wear that night. I realized, Wow, that looks cool!”
Tumblr media
Rihanna in a Raf Simons coat.
Rihanna attended a bash at Opening Ceremony in NYC in a Raf Simons jacket from his Fall 2015 Menswear collection, boots by Dior and a bucket hat designed by her best friend, Melissa Forde. The look is unusual—and impossible to ignore. “There is no one else that excites me more,” Alexander Wang told Vogue. “[Rihanna’s style is] raw, it’s smart, it’s everything pop culture needs to move forward.”
Tumblr media
Rihanna in Dior.
Topless under a Dior blazer and matching Twiggy-esque mini for the launch of Jay-Z’s music streaming service, Tidal, @badgirlriri lives up to her Instagram handle.

Rihanna in Versace and Adam Selman
To perform Bitch Better Have My Money at the I Heart Radio Awards, Rihanna threw head-to-toe green Versace (thigh high boots, fierce fur, throwback choker) over an Adam Selman LBD. Jaws across America are still being picked up off the floor.

Tumblr media
Rihanna in Adam Selman.
To promote her movie Home, she made a demure cardigan and ankle socks look decidedly daring. “She’s bold. She’s not afraid of fashion. She doesn’t let fashion overcome her,” Selman once told  WWD. “She embraces it and makes everything she puts on her own. Not many people do that.”
Tumblr media
Rihanna in Moschino
“I have a job that requires quite a lot of glam,” she told Bazaar. Her colorblock sequin, fur-trimmed Moschino coat (worn to a fashion industry party) more than fit the bill. She was also (it would appear) naked underneath.
Tumblr media
Rihanna in Vashtie Violette x Puma
Athleisure? Try Athluxury. Rihanna pairs Puma shorts and a windbreaker with sky-high Tom Ford sandals at a Lakers game. “She can throw on combinations you can’t imagine other people could possibly wear, and look great,” Ford told Vogue.
Tumblr media
Rihanna in denim on denim.
It probably took her, oh, four, five seconds to throw this look together for a night out in NYC. But when your closet is brimming with Louis Vuitton and enough on-trend denim to rival a Barney’s Jeans Bar, even your most casual ensembles make a style statement.

The Most Memorable Golden Globe Looks of All Time
This Sunday we will see Hollywood’s biggest and brightest celebs grace the red carpet for the 73rd annual Golden Globes. While we can’t wait to see what they will be wearing (be sure to check out our fashion predictions), we also couldn’t help but reflect on some of the most iconic outfits that have ever appeared at the ceremony. Take a sartorial tour of some of the highs and lows throughout the show’s sequin-laden history.

Tumblr media
Grace Kelly, 1956
Grace Kelly won the World’s Film Favorite Actor (Female) award in 1956, but she easily could have been named “World’s Most Stylish Woman.” Her silk cheongsam with cap sleeves was the epitome of, well, grace. Just another example of why she’s one of the most enduring — and alluring — fashion icons.

Tumblr media
Elizabeth Taylor, 1957
Taylor, known for her amazing jewelry and multiple husbands, wore a dainty floral print dress with full skirt when she attended the Golden Globes in 1957. She accessorized the look with a tiara, chandelier earrings, and Mike Todd (aka hubby No. 3).
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Marilyn Monroe, 1962
The often imitated, but never equaled, Monroe received her last award in 1962 in a slinky, black sequin gown that no doubt turned heads at the ceremony and— rumor has it — sparked a romance with her presenter, Glenn Ford.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Cher, 1973
Who else but Cher could bare a taut, tanned tummy at a red carpet gala? The singer attended the ceremony with her husband, Sonny Bono, but all eyes were on her in a jacquard floral two-piece and oversize fur coat.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Anjelica Huston, 1974
Anjelica Huston, ever the coquette, escorted her man, Jack Nicholson, to the 1974 ceremony in a rumpled silk top and matching skirt, with a fur boa casually tossed over the shoulder and a flower in her hair.

Tumblr media
Drew Barrymore, 1983
How could you not love little Drew Barrymore in this ruffled purple dress? The 7-year-old was attending for her role in E.T., and we were charmed to the moon and back.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Sigourney Weaver, 1989
Sigourney Weaver had a banner year in 1989, winning Best Supporting Actress for Working Girl and Best Actress for Gorillas in the Mist, which she shared with Jodie Foster and Shirley MacLaine in a historic three-way tie. This asymmetric red dress was thoroughly modern and just the right kind of sexy. It certainly would not look out of place on a red carpet today.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Julia Roberts, 1990
In an age before stylists were commonplace, Julia Roberts decided to dress herself. (A novel idea!) Her choice to don a man’s suit by Giorgio Armani stemmed from her desire to wear something that was just as comfortable as what her then boyfriend, Kiefer Sutherland, was wearing. A suit is always chic on a woman, but it wouldn’t have hurt if this one were at least her size!
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Kate Moss, 1995
Even when she was younger, Kate Moss knew how to command a red carpet. At the height of her ’90s heyday, she wore a vintage dress to the Globes that was purchased by her then boyfriend, Johnny Depp. The full-length sequined ensemble was originally worn by Julie Christie in Shampoo, making everything about her even more impossibly cool.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Courtney Love, 2000
This tattered John Galliano dress was the perfect choice for a star who  has confessed, “I am not a woman. I am a force of nature.”
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Halle Berry, 2000
Berry looked radiant in this feminine red and white Valentino gown. Her minimal makeup and short hair really let her beauty shine, especially when she won a Best Actress award for Introducing Dorothy Dandridge.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Björk, 2001
It’s entirely possible that Björk is a creature from another galaxy. We would not expect her to wear a normal dress with ruffles or a plunging neckline, so when she showed up wearing Michael Jackson’s face on her gown, all we could do is stand back and say, “Yes, Björk, Yes!”
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Kate Hudson, 2002
Kate Hudson made waves in this Versace gown. The sparkling dress with plunging neckline and bell sleeves hugged her body in all the right places and turned her into a glamorous mermaid. If there were ever a dress that perfectly captured someone’s personality, this was certainly it.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Sharon Stone, 2003
Throughout the years, Sharon Stone has established herself as someone who does whatever the heck she wants, no matter what people think. This look certainly confirmed her self-righteous attitude. The sheer top, witchy boots, car-wash skirt, and weird Illuminati pendant are an actual challenge to human eyes.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Salma Hayek, 2003
If you look up the word sexy in the dictionary, it should come with a photo of Salma Hayek in this red hot Narciso Rodriguez gown. The dress hit all of her curves without being too revealing.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Lara Flynn Boyle, 2003
Lots of little girls want to be ballerinas when they grow up. It seemed that Lara Flynn Boyle never outgrew this wish and decided the red carpet was the best place to manifest her dreams. It wasn’t.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Charlize Theron, 2004
Many think that yellow is a hard color to pull off, but Theron’s subtly ruffled Dior gown was the perfect choice to give a relaxed vibe at an upscale event. Her perfectly tousled hair actually complemented the shape of her dress, and so did the Best Actress award she took home for Monster.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Diane Keaton, 2004
Diane Keaton is usually in a suit, a style that perhaps she should never have walked away from. This all-white look was a bit of a head-scratcher. Was it the satin gloves that put it over the top? Or the white lace Victorian boots? Or perhaps the random string of pearls? It was all too much!
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Sarah Jessica Parker, 2004
Undoubtedly the most-watched-fashionista of the early naughts, Sarah Jessica Parker stunned when she opted for this strapless gray Chanel Haute Couture dress. The look shot her straight to icon status, as did the golden statuette she took home that evening for Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy. Carrie would have been proud.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Nicole Kidman, 2005
Nicole Kidman’s teal Gucci gown was probably one of her finer red carpet moments. A bold statement for sure, but the color of this satin dress complemented her alabaster skin so perfectly, and the tuft of peacock plumage was an elegant touch.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Scarlett Johansson, 2006
With her loose blond curls, the bright red, figure-hugging Valentino gown cemented ScarJo’s reputation as a total knockout.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Reese Witherspoon, 2006
Witherspoon’s Chanel dress was beautiful. It had a modern silhouette and just enough sparkle at the top to make it award-show ready. Unfortunately, Kirsten Dunst had worn it to the Golden Globes in 2003, which meant that major drama ensued. But in the end, the important thing was that Witherspoon looked radiant when she received her Best Actress award for Walk the Line.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Zhang Ziyi, 2006
Zhang Ziyi was a relative newcomer to the red carpet, but in this almost-neon Emporio Armani gown, she surely made her presence known.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Keira Knightley, 2006
The year that she was nominated for Pride and Prejudice, Keira Knightley also made headlines for this elegant cream Valentino gown. The sexy updo and smoldering eye makeup helped to get her on every best dressed list that year.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Hilary Swank, 2007
Hilary Swank looked like a billion-dollar baby in this Chanel Haute Couture gown. The dress showed off her slender, toned frame, and the diamond hair clips were the perfect finish to this very polished look.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Helen Mirren, 2007
Dressing in a teal Donna Karan gown with plunging neckline, Helen Mirren proved that women are definitely still sexy in their 60s. It was a good year for her: She took home the award for her role in The Queen.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Reese Witherspoon, 2007
This canary yellow knee-length strapless dress established Witherspoon as one of the most stylish women on the red carpet and made the repeat-dress snafu of the previous year all but forgotten. It was made by industry favorite Olivier Theyskens, who choose this moment to make his debut as Nina Ricci’s creative director. Reese’s laid-back but glam hair and red satin sandals brought the look to another level entirely.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Cameron Diaz, 2009
This was among one of Cameron Diaz’s finest red carpet moments. Could anyone else have looked this good in this Chanel dress? Her toned arms, carefree blond hair, and subtle makeup all came together perfectly.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Jennifer Lopez, 2009
This Marchesa dress looked like someone poured liquid gold over J.Lo’s head: It just molded to her body. Keeping the hair off her face and adding just the right amount of bronzed makeup made Lopez look like an actual goddess.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Eva Mendes, 2009
Eva Mendes and this Dior Haute Couture gown were a red carpet magic moment. The crisp white strapless gown with exaggerated side ruffle detail was a knockout, much like the lady herself. We loved that she threw on a turquoise statement necklace from Van Cleef & Arpels. It all worked like a dream.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Diane Kruger, 2010
Diane Kruger would look good in a sack, but this dress deserves an extra- special mention because it was not an easy look to pull off. There is a lot going on in this Christian Lacroix Haute Couture fuchsia gown, with its various tones, bow, and textured ruffle, but Kruger wore it with such grace and confidence that it fared her well.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Emma Stone, 2012
Lanvin’s plunging V-neck dress was a major turning point for the young actress, who had previously played it safe. With her smoky eye and war-eagle buckled belt, she looked like a modern-day Grecian goddess.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Tilda Swinton, 2012
Swinton is queen of the bold red carpet dress, and this Haider Ackermann ensemble perfectly captured her androgynous look. It was the perfect menswear-inspired style that was worn with a wink.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Lea Michele, 2012
The Glee actress had the right idea when choosing this Marchesa silver dress, but she should have stuck with just the glitter. The cutouts and see-through mesh fabric that did not quite match her skin tone did her no favors. Next stop, Vegas?
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Angelina Jolie, 2012
Angelina Jolie channeled old Hollywood glamour in this Atelier Versace gown. Bonus points for incorporating slashes of scarlet on her dress, bag, and lips.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Charlize Theron, 2012
This pink Dior confection could have easily overwhelmed its wearer, but on Theron, it was good, flirty fun.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Kerry Washington, 2013
Kerry Washington has become everyone’s favorite “woman in control,” thanks to her TV show Scandal, and in this light peach, sheer Miu Miu gown with silver embroidery, she also showed that she has a keen fashion sense. The matching shoes and modern haircut confirmed her role as a boss.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Jennifer Lawrence, 2013
Lawrence started earning her sartorial stripes a mere three years ago. This Dior Haute Couture gown is a timeless red carpet moment.
(Photo: Getty Images)
Tumblr media
Emma Watson, 2014
“Oh, I’m sorry. Is my back bothering you? No? OK, let’s get on with it then.” With this Dior look, Watson began to establish her daring approach to fashion. The stylish ensemble made it clear that Hermione was not playing around anymore.

Kerry Washington, 2014
This custom Balenciaga gown helped to conceal Washington’s ever-growing baby bump. We love that she was dripping in diamonds as well.

Tumblr media
Lupita Nyong’o, 2014
The bright red, off-the-shoulder style and attached cape made this Ralph Lauren gown forever a winner for Nyong’o and cemented her place in red carpet history.

Tumblr media
Julianne Moore, 2015
When you’re as A-list as Ms. Moore, only a knockout custom gown by your good friend will do. Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy whipped up some red carpet magic for the Still Alice star with this ombré sequin and feather ensemble.

Cindy Crawford, 2015
Versace, Versace, Versace! The supermodel mama proved that she still knows how to strut in this electric blue gown.

Amal Clooney, 2015
Mrs. Clooney made her red carpet debut in a vintage Dior gown, white opera gloves, and a matching white clutch. The gloves spawned many memes, but with gorgeous George on your arm, who cares?

The Dos & Don'ts of Fall Dressing
by Bobby Schuessler
It’s not difficult to put together an outfit. Pair a top with a bottom and you’re done. But as celebs and It girls prove to us on a daily basis, there’s a difference between outfits and outfitsthat feel high concept and inspiring. While we know you, our fearlessly stylish readers, know how to put together a gorgeous look that feels distinctly you, a few new tips never hurt anyone. Right? So to freshen up your wardrobe and keep you up to date on what to wear this season, we’re sharing the dos (and don’ts!) of fall dressing.
Do Try Denim in Unexpected Places
You can never go wrong with jeans or your classic denim jacket, but one way to look 100% more fashionable this season is to test out denim in unexpected places like in a coat iteration or even on an accessory.
Tumblr media
Photo: A Love is Blind
Don’t Go Overboard
While we love denim on denim, make sure you don’t go overboard with your alternative denim pieces. You don’t want to emulate Britney and Justin, do you?
Shop denim coats:

Do Go For Statement Boots
This season is flooded with amazing boots in a wide array of interesting and unique patterns and textures—perfect to help you stand out from the crowd.

Don’t Just Stick to Basic Black
While black boots will always be in style, a little change (cue: statement boots) never hurt anyone.

Do Mix Textures
There’s nothing more forward-feeling and chic than mixing different textures like velvet, silk, cashmere, and everything in between.
Tumblr media

Don’t Look Like You’re Trying Too Hard
While mixing textures is great, you want to make sure your separates still go together—so pay close attention to the colors and patterns so it doesn’t look like you’re trying too hard.
Shop textured clothing:
Tumblr media
Zara Velvet Trousers ($129)
Tumblr media
Loeffler Randall Blocked Shearling Coat ($1650)
Do Push for the Unexpected
We love nothing more than pushing the boundaries just a bit when it comes to fashion—like pairing two seemingly different styles of clothing together (like a nerd-chic sweater with a femme skirt).

Don’t Wear a Costume
While going for the weird and different is fantastic, ensure that you’re not just throwing together random items where it could potentially look like a costume.

Do Add Layers

Don’t Forget About Proportions
While layering is undoubtedly chic (and essential!), there is such a thing as too much layering. You want to make sure you’re watching your proportions and don’t bulk up too much with too many extra fabrics hanging about randomly.

On the Horizon: Crisp Fall Layers in Black and White
Tumblr media
Lay the foundation of an enduring fall wardrobe with a purist palette. In black and white, modern shirting, seasonless knits, refined denim, and striking coats become versatile building blocks, able to take on new identities—from casual to formal, masculine to feminine—with a simple change of accessories. Prepare to greet crisp days with graphic contrast and modular, monochrome ease.
Tumblr media
Edun Embroidered Stitch Tee, Protagonist Shirt 01
To brighten up black basics with fresh whites, focus on subtle yet special details: artful seaming, precise pleats, traces of embroidery.
Start with an updated version of the classic oxford. Protagonist’s signature white button-up is a study in proportions, refined by a hidden placket and extended cuffs. For an elevated take on the white tee, look to Edun. Creative director Danielle Sherman lengthened the short-sleeved staple while refining the fit. Contrast stitching along the crewneck, sides, and vented hem of her tunic-length top is a nod to the work of Japanese artist Yuko Nishimura.
Tumblr media
Protagonist Shirt 01, Proenza Schouler Sleeveless Knit Dress
A streamlined, sleeveless knit dress takes on a tailored edge when layered over a white button-up made striking by extended cuffs.
Tumblr media
Proenza Schouler DB Coat, J.W. Anderson Shirt Dress with Pleats, Atea Oceanie Suiting Joggers, Robert Clergerie Emocj Loafer
Welcome a new season with the coat that will get you through the next two. Narrow the options to those that are black, warm, and collared, and then express yourself through the silhouette. Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez go the sleek route, with their double-breasted reference to menswear—softened by a touch of cashmere. Acne Studios offers a less buttoned-up look, with a modern wool coat framed by oversized lapels and a removable faux fur collar.
Tumblr media
Acne Studios Era Coat, Protagonist Shirt 20 Collarstand Shirt with Princess Seams, Proenza Schouler PS-J2 Skinny Jeans, Robert Clergerie Emocj Loafer
Take a break from indigo with creamy white denim that adds instant dimension to black or balance crisp white cotton with a sporty take on the black trouser. Atea Oceanie’s easy-fitting pants have an elasticated drawstring waist but gain polish from a sleek stretch suiting fabric, tapered cut, and refined details such as notched cuffs. Ground either style in the subtle tonalities at play in lustrous calfskin loafers by Robert Clergerie.

Used Wedding Dresses: Where to Buy & Sell Online
Whether you don’t want your pricey gown collecting dust in your closet or you’re looking to recoup some cash after your wedding, check out our reviews of the best websites to buy or sell your preowned wedding dress.
By Shelley Brown
Tumblr media
If you’re in the market to sell your wedding dress or looking to buy a used one, you may be tempted to turn to large online marketplaces like Ebay and Craigslist. While these popular websites are great for listing and buying everyday purchases, a website specifically for used wedding dresses can probably offer you a better deal and a more user-friendly service for this very niche (and important) wedding day purchase. Check out our tips for buying and selling a pre owned wedding dress, as well our reviews of the best used wedding dress sites, below!
Tips for Selling Used Wedding Dresses
Whether you aren’t the sentimental type or you’re just savvy, selling your used wedding dress is an easy way to recoup some money from your wedding. If your dress is in good condition, consider listing it online over selling it to a thrift store, where your listing will reach a greater volume of potential buyers and can be more easily shared and promoted. A used wedding dress in great condition and under two years old can usually sell for 50 percent of the retail price. And, if your dress is a more recognizable brand like Oscar de la Renta or Vera Wang, you could make closer to 60 percent of its retail value. Even if your gown isn’t designer, don’t give up hope—since there’s a large demand for all kinds of second hand wedding dresses, a designer label doesn’t necessarily mean your dress will sell faster. Not to mention, plus size dresses are also in high demand, so you shouldn’t worry if you’re not a sample size.
More from The Knot: Phrases Engaged Couples Should Never Say
Tips for Buying Used Wedding Dresses
Buying a used wedding dress can be a bit of a gamble, but as long you’re cautious, it’s a thrifty way to snag a designer wedding dress for half the retail value. Plus, if you get lucky and buy a wedding dress from someone with a similar body type, you may not have to make too many alterations, which also cuts down on your costs. As long as the gown you found looks to be in good condition (if you can’t see it in person, make sure photos show it clearly from all angles or ask to Skype with the seller to get a better look), a used wedding gown can be a terrific deal. A few tips: Since your dress will have to be custom-tailored to your body regardless, a larger size is easier to work with where alterations are concerned. Fabric can always be subtracted, but adding more fabric that perfectly matches the rest of the gown can be difficult (not to mention expensive!). And because you’re getting the wedding dress for a steal, you can put some of the money you save toward making sure it fits like a glove (and some extra dry-cleaning if necessary).

Where to Buy and Sell Wedding Used Wedding Dresses Online
Nearly Newlywed: Part used wedding dress boutique, part inspirational blog, Nearly Newlywed saves sellers time and stress by handling all buyer interactions and shipping. The application process is quick and easy: Sellers just submit their measurements with a wedding dress description and photos of their gown. If their listing is approved, Nearly Newlywed takes it from there, answering any buyer questions and shipping the dress directly. So, sellers can sit back and relax while the website’s experts do the grunt work.
Review: Why do we love Nearly Newlywed so much? This innovative marketplace makes it easy on buyers and sellers. If you’re buying a used wedding dress, the application process ensures you’re paying for the real deal and not a counterfeit wedding dress. And if you’re selling, once your application is approved, your work is done. Be aware this website charges a 25 percent commission fee.
Other Websites to Buy and Sell Used Wedding Dresses:
Tradesy: A fashion-forward website geared toward designer brands, Tradesy offers a streamlined interface with a quick listing process (under 60 seconds). Since the website is curated like a high-end retailer site (think: Net-A-Porter or Shopbop for preowned wedding dresses and other brand name items), users can search used wedding dresses by label, or browse listings in the coveted “Editor’s Picks" section.
Review: Tradesy takes a 9 percent commission on sales, and promises prompt payment. Be aware Tradesy covers shipping and returns for most fashion items, but used wedding dresses are not included. If you’re buying, Tradesy comes with a money back guarantee if wedding items are inauthentic, taking some of the worry out of the used wedding dress buying process.
Still White: A marketplace specifically for used wedding dresses, Still White may not look as fancy as other preowned wedding dress websites, but it offers a wide range of used wedding dresses, from Vera Wang and Pronovias to Essense of Australia and Maggie Sottero.
Review: This straightforward website gets down to the nitty gritty and lets users browse by dress condition, taking the mystery out of the second hand dress buying process (after all, a sample dress is usually more worn than something brand new). Sellers can create a listing for for $19.95, or upgrade to a premium listing for $29.95, which means their dress will be promoted on the site. While it’s an initial fee to create a listing, the website takes no commission, meaning sellers keep pretty much all of their sales.
PreOwned Wedding Dresses: Boasting over 20,000 used wedding dress listings, Pre Owned Wedding Dresses has been around since 2004 and offers the largest selection of dresses on the web. Sellers can list their used wedding dresses for a flat fee of $25, and can negotiate the price directly with potential buyers.
Review: The trick to selling on this website is making your wedding dress listing stand out, since the quantity of second hand dresses on the site can feel pretty daunting. Though it can be more difficult to navigate than other second hand wedding dress websites, Pre Owned Wedding Dresses has some extra perks: you can also buy and sell bridesmaid and mother of the bride dresses, and there are lots of helpful wedding dress FAQs available, as well as an inspiration blog.
Where to Rent Wedding Dresses Online
Rent the Runway: It’s not the most common way to find a wedding gown, but ready-to-wear rental websites like Rent the Runway have white dresses in stock that would work for your walk down the aisle, and you might even find a designer that’s devoted to wedding dresses.
Review: The upside of renting is you can wear an expensive designer gown while paying just a fraction of the retail price (as low as $30). The obvious catch though is since your wedding gown is borrowed, you may have to plan around its availability, and you can’t make alterations—not to mention there’s a risk it’s never delivered. And, of course, you don’t get to keep the wedding dress as a special memento in the end.
Vow to Be Chic: Primarily a bridesmaid dress rental site, Vow to Be Chic also offers a smaller selection of little white dresses by popular bridal designers like Theia, Nicole Miller and Watters.
Review: You won’t find super formal wedding dresses here, but this option is perfect for weddings with a more casual vibe and flirty second wedding dresses. Rentals start at $50, and while you can’t have your little white dress altered, each order comes with two size options to ensure you get the perfect fit. And, like its ready-to-wear counterpart Rent the Runway, Vow to Be Chic also has stylists available to guide you through the rental process.

The Surprising Shopping Habits of Women Around the World
Tumblr media
by Jessica Schiffer
We recently profiled the unusual engagement ring customs of women all over the world, which got us curious about how some of their other fashion habits might differ from ours in the US. And what fashion habit do women tend to engage in more than the rest? Well, shopping of course! To find out how women in different corners of the world go about buying new stuff, I spoke to a handful of international ladies about some of the shopping trends they’ve witnessed. Though this is by no means a definitive guide—everyone’s different, after all—it certainly highlights that where you live can affect how you shop.
“The return policy has changed slightly in the last few years but it used to be very difficult to return things, so you couldn’t make any mistakes or opt to try something on at home. Things are changing now thanks to stores like Zara and H&M, but a lot of women still try to just make the smartest purchases they can.
“You can find more independent boutiques here, too, and we prefer to shop in them overall. In England, on the other hand, one high street resembles the next so you always see the same brands, but in France there’s more variety.” — Muriel, Paris
Tumblr media
“In most Chinese cities like Hong Kong the stores will offer free alterations, which is really nice. And everyone basically just shops in malls because there are much fewer free standing stores here than you’d get in a city like New York. As a result shopping becomes much more of an ‘outing’ than a one-stop-shop kind of thing.” — Charlotte, Hong Kong

Tumblr media
“Sweden only has big sales twice a year and everyone knows when they are, so people make a point to go shopping at those times. There is one in the winter and one in the summer, after Midsommar (the big holiday celebrating the longest day of the year).
“Almost all of the young people will keep track of sample sales that pop up in the spring, as a result. The nice Swedish brands like J. Lindeberg, Hope, Whyred, etc. all have sample sales and market them on Facebook so a ton of people go! Shopping in general is just more planned out here.” — Margot, Stockholm
Tumblr media
“Women in Africa tend to shop in secondhand open-air markets, where massive amounts of clothing have been shipped over from the US and Europe. Everything is sold by weight, so it’s a total crap shoot what’s in your bag: you just pick at random, pay for the total weight, open it up, and sort through it.
“There are no dressing rooms, so the sellers either look you up and down and tell you ‘your size’ or you try the clothes on over what you’re wearing. Some of the more upscale shopping involves people going to these markets, finding the best clothes, and then washing, ironing, and reselling them for more money.” — Jourdan, Bungoma
Tumblr media
“European women often take way too many items to try on and then complain loudly when they are asked to put some aside. They will also complain if there is a queue and be pushy with people occupying the dressing rooms (Parisian women especially—and I am Parisian).
“They also keep to themselves and most find it very rude to comment on what others are trying on (unlike in the U.S. where I notice people talk to strangers much more easily).”— Elinor, London

“There are a lot of very wealthy families in the Arab countries and they tend to be enamored by luxury in all its forms. The wealthiest women rely on personal shoppers to complete their wardrobes, often sending them overseas to get the exact designer items they want.” — Dina, Dubai

Jewelry as Object: Introducing Charlotte Chesnais
Tumblr media
Charlotte Chesnais has a lot to be excited about. In July, she was awarded the inaugural ANDAM Accessories Prize of 30,000 euros (approximately $34,000, at current exchange) for her eponymous jewelry collection, which debuted last spring during Paris Fashion Week. “I want to work with stones, so I will use the money to work with stones,” says the designer. “But there’s so many things I can do, I haven’t really decided yet.” Weeks before that triumph, Catherine Deneuve wore her necklace in an issue of Elle France and Laetitia Casta was spotted in her Saturne earrings, two elegantly intertwined hoops, at an event in Paris. Chesnais rounded out a busy summer by giving birth to her first child—just in time to finish the new pieces she’ll show later this month.

Charlotte Chesnais Hurly Burly Ring
As the daughter of a pharmacist and an optician who grew up in the French countryside between Brittany and Normandy, Chesnais always dreamed of becoming a doctor—until her mother pointed her in another direction. “She said, ‘I don’t think you can become a doctor, darling,’” recalls Chesnais. “It was very nice, but I just remember, she said, ‘I don’t think it’s for you.’”
Chesnais listened to her mother’s advice and pursued a business degree—but that didn’t feel quite right either, so she quit after three months and applied to fashion school. She was accepted at Studio Berçot, a small fashion school whose noted alumni include Isabel Marant, Roland Mouret, and Yazbukey. There, she received a broad education in fashion. “You learn a lot a different areas of fashion,” says Chesnais.
Tumblr media
“The judges were won over by her stunning use of curved forms in her jewelry,” said Nadja Swarovski, who joined the likes of Pierre Bergé, designer Haider Ackermann, and curator Pamela Golbin on the 2015 ANDAM (National Association for the Development of the Fashion Arts) Award jury. In July, Chesnais received the organization’s first Accessories Prize. Pictured above are her Medium Saturne Earrings, Hurly Burly Ring, and Heart Ring.
After completing the two-year program, she had a brief stint with Emanuel Ungaro before landing in the position that would turn her into the jewelry designer she is today. A Studio Berçot alum who worked at Balenciaga was in need of an assistant, and Chesnais was hired. Her first assignment was to help with the ready-to-wear pre-collection when the label was under the creative lead of Nicolas Ghesquière. A year later, she moved on to the runway show. Soon, she was tasked with fitting VIP clients such as Salma Hayek, whose wedding dress she helped with, and actresses like Kristen Stewart and Julianne Moore, both of whom she fitted for the Oscars. “At first I was super-scared, because it’s very funny to say, ‘Oh, let’s go to Los Angeles to do a fitting,’ but then you arrive there, and you’re just alone and you have to meet a big VIP,” says Chesnais. “It was great.”
It was while preparing for the fall/winter 2009 runway show that Ghesquière decided he wanted jewelry to accompany the collection, so he assigned the project to Chesnais—even though she had no prior experience designing jewelry. “I approached it quite like I approached the ready-to-wear with him,” she says. “I met people, I went in the factory, because I didn’t know how to do jewelry, so I had to learn, and it was really interesting, and it came quite naturally, and I really loved it.” Chesnais continued working on the ready-to-wear collection while doing the jewelry. She ended up working under Ghesquière for nearly a decade before his departure from the label in 2012.

There is something about the object that I like. I didn’t have anything personal that I wanted to say about fashion, but I did want to say something personally about jewelry. Charlotte Chesnais
Tumblr media
The pieces that Chesnais herself has taken to wearing daily are her coiled Hurly Burly Ring and Small Hook Single Earring: two in each lobe.
Chesnais credits Ghesquière for her success. “Being with him for ten years was the best school I could ever imagine,” she says. “I learned a lot. I learned that you always need to move forward, you always need to look more, to do more research, that precision is very important, that detail is very important.”
After parting ways with Balenciaga, Chesnais worked at various houses—Kenzo, Maison Kitsuné, and the two labels she still works for at the moment, Maiyet and Paco Rabanne, where creative director Julien Dossena, who she worked with at Balenciaga, trusted her enough to design handbags—her first time doing so—for the label. About a year ago, she felt the desire to step out on her own. “I started to feel like I had more to say than before, probably because before with Nicolas he needed to express so much, and I was missing something, so I said I need to say something personally, and it came naturally into my head,” she says.
Now she makes her jewelry—graceful, winding curves that wrap around the wrist, fingers, neck, or ears—in three metals: silver, gold, and vermeil (a high-quality mix of silver coated with gold). Chesnais says her jewelry is meant for everyone, whether you’re a movie star like Laetitia Casta, or a doctor, like her sister. “My youngest customer, she’s the daughter of one of my best friends, she’s ten, and my oldest customer, she’s a grandmother and she’s seventy-five,” says Chesnais. “I love that the idea that the same earring or same bracelet can be worn by different women—not the same age, not the same type—and that they really love it.”

10 Things No One Tells You About The Wedding Day
No matter how many weddings you’ve attended before, or how many times you’ve been a bridesmaid, there are some things you just don’t find out about until your own wedding day.
By Rachel Torgerson
Tumblr media
Photo: Caitlin Thomas Photography
Talk to anyone whose gone through it before, and they’ll tell you the wedding day absolutely flies by. You’ll be so busy going from one thing to the next – before you know it, you’ll be cutting the cake! Any number of wedding planning advice articles will tell you that you need an emergency kit (just in case!), that it can be difficult to use the bathroom in your ballgown and to make sure to pack a stain remover. But, there are all these intangible, special moments that make up the wedding day itself. Here, 10 truths about the wedding day that no one ever talks about.
1. 10 minutes before the ceremony is the most nerve-wracking part
The time leading up to the walk down the aisle will be the most anxiety-ridden 10 minutes you’ll ever have. And it makes sense – you’re about to make a life-changing decision in front of all the people you love and care about the most. Just remember that your other half is waiting for you at the end of the journey and you’re going to have a huge party to celebrate.
More from The Knot: Phrases Engaged Couples Should Never Say
2. The ceremony is the best part
There’s something truly amazing about the wedding ceremony. The traditions, the vows and all your emotional family members combine to make this into one of the most special moments of your life. Our advice? Take it all in, and drink it up. You’ll want these memories to last a lifetime.
More from The Knot: 9 Glorious Times Bacon Made an Appearance at Weddings
3. You’ll definitely cry
Okay, this one might not be such a secret. What is it about weddings that makes everyone so emotional, anyway? All we know is that crying is basically inevitable. And since you already know the waterworks are coming, the best thing to do is just be prepared. Wear waterproof makeup (or even get eyelash extensions!), keep some mascara and lipstick readily available for quick touch ups, and store some tissues nearby – you’ll need them!
4. Your face will hurt from smiling so much
Thousands of pictures aside, you’ll be smiling all day because it’s going to be the best day ever. You’re marrying your best friend, after all! Between finally “making it official” with your fiance, eating amazing food and dancing like crazy with all of your close friends and family, there’s literally no reason to frown!
5. You’ll be amazed by the love and support of your family and friends
They all showed up for one reason – you! You and your soon-to-be spouse will get all – and we really mean all – of the attention. You may not even be able to eat dinner, since you’ll have so many people to talk to and so many pictures to take. Between the pinches on the cheek from your grandma and the side-punches from your college pals, you’ll be overcome by the love and support of those around you.
6. You’ll want a little alone time
In fact, you might be so overcome that you may want to take a few moments just for you, or the two of you. Some of the most special moments of the day are the few minutes that you get to spend alone – preparing for what’s to come – or together with your new spouse, taking it all in.
7. You might be a little exhausted
Let’s face it, you won’t get too much sleep the night before your wedding. Between stressing over the seating chart, a tiff with your mom, or just overall excitement for the day to come, you’ll be seriously lacking in shut-eye. Pro tip: Under eye concealer will be your best friend.
8. It won’t all go as planned
Something might end up going wrong. It could be little, or it could be big, but our best advice is to soldier on. Try to think of the big picture. Can you solve this problem easily? Does it make a huge difference in the long run? Are your guests still having fun? Are you having fun? If these questions are easily answered, then don’t sweat it – just keep enjoying your celebration, and feel free to delegate tasks to planners and relatives so you don’t have to deal with drama.
9. The most magical moment will be when you least suspect it
We promise that the most special moment of the day, or weekend, is going to be something you never expected. A stolen minute or two with your soon-to-be spouse, a hug from your dad, or a speech by your tipsy college roommate could end up meaning the world to you.
10. You’ll feel different
Even if you and your other half have been cohabiting for years, once you’re legally wed things will feel official. It might just be a slight shift or it could feel like a noticeable change, but it will definitely seem like the real deal.
