Just telling you all I’m deleting this blog because I really don’t like Steven Universe anymore and really just to busy to keep up with this blog!

ok, whats the deal with crits saying that amethyst has zero characterization? im not going to write angry essays about her in this anon-ask, but I think were missing something here. whats your opinion?

Amethyst definitely has characterization, but her character growth and depth is never given the level of detail and intricacy with like say… Pearl.

Like what are Pearl’s flaws? She’s overbearing, she’s self conscious, she’s controlling, she’s selfish, she’s dependent, she can’t let go of the past, she’s petty, she holds people to really high standards.

You can do a lot with this sort of characterization, and while some of her episodes feel rehashed, there are some new things for the audience to either enjoy or learn about.

What are Amethyst’s flaws? She’s self conscious, she’s lazy, she’s reckless, she’s…… actually that’s about it. You can really tell Amethyst’s character depth was a side thought, considering her background wasn’t even thought of until the show started airing compared to garnet and Pearl who both had plans way before the show even began.

She’s a very limited character and the writers know that. It’s why she got paired with Steven in a sad excuse for a character arc, because she has almost no depth to her.

Connie, Lars and even Greg are more complex and layered than Amethyst could ever be. To a point where they literally dropped the only defining flaw they had out of no where.

THIS is why people claim she has no characterization. Because the writers refuse to give her proper writing and depth and resort to slapping on another “I hate myself / I’m not good enough” internal conflict onto her. As of now, Amethyst has no goals or aspirations considering Smoky Quartz just magically healed her.

Nothing about her relationship with Garnet, her feelings about Sugilite, using her wrestling persona to express her frustrations and even experiment with her gender. None of that. She’s just hollow.

Idk the time span Steven left Lars with the off colors, but it’s a little upsetting how it kind of feels that the off colors were incompetent of doing anything, and now are able to leave home world and stick it to the diamonds with Lars as their leader? Someone who had to learn and understand at the very least how the government is structured and where the spaceships are at. You are telling me that Lars managed to become a public enemy and be the leader of the off colors? Making it seem that the off colors couldn't do this themselves? When they are at least aware if the existence of other planets? It could have been established that they were at least planning on escaping Homeworld when they first meet Steven and Lars. (Sorry there is no clear thought in this this was what I wrote down last night and I saw the trailers and saved it in my drafts and have no idea where I was going with this.)

In review

Both Sugar and Lamar admitted Concrete was a racial caricature and they were sorry. Sugar even said that the gems are racially coded in a “sci-fi way of diversity”. That means all those characters we said were racially coded? Guess what. They are:)
