really strange to see people posting anonymous posts to an anonymous drama tumblr complaining about other people having drama
last thing i’ll say on this: the council has no power to make changes to the site, it’s all a conversation together about how to move it forward. I’m inviting a diverse group of people who have opinions across the spectrum, and yes, that means that some of those people will be on the “other side” of the drama that has been created in the CW market.
The people chosen is not an endorsement of their off site activity in private chatrooms (just like this anonymous tumblr) but their thoughts on the market as a whole and how to move it forward.
What happened to the screenshots from Ale's server where she and Wound and a bunch of their other friends were discussing making certain recolours of their items private in order to screw with Nightshadez because she wouldn't sell a PUBLIC item back to Peculiar? Keith needs to see these because currently he thinks putting Ale and Wound on the Council will somehow support his desire to see more public unlimited releases and fewer items made private for no good reason.

I’m back!
1. I’m still inviting people to the group
2. These folks all rock and have volunteered to help move the CW industry forward. I don’t understand your beefs / drama and don’t care
3. Is this a faked screenshot? Some of these things are in the wrong place...
Final nail in the coffin for Subeta: the Mean Girls who bully people off the site are the new overlords of CWs! Just missing Peculiar and Sonatine.

Item Rarity Squish!
Just posted about an upcoming item rarity squish, which fits into larger plans that we have to shift around the economy.
I’m going to attach an image of a proposal we’re working through with no additional context except for you to guess what is going on 😉

Whew had to find my tumblr login..
Wow, I haven’t typed in this little box in YEARS. My old friend!
I wanted to say (since I see some posts about it) that i’m really excited for new pet sites, and honestly it gives me / the team at Subeta energy to see such a huge success like Dappervolk!
We’re taking it to 💕 and making some really major shifts to Subeta and the way we operate, and I hope to have some of these things in front of users in the next few weeks. A lot of them are things we’ve just been stagnant on, but no longer!
1. Pet name policy: WHEW this is going to be a big one. We’re going to change the way that pet names, and unique names work.
2. Rarity squish: We have tens of thousands of items, and a rarity system inherited from Neopets that doesn’t need to exist. We’re going to post lots more about this, but reducing our rarities to 5-6 types.
3. Main shop changes: 🤐
4. CW Changes: We’ve created the council (last few people are getting on board now) and hope to have major changes to the CW market soon!
5. Group activities: We’re creating systems to allow team-based activities on the site.
We’re looking at what is successful on these new generation of sites, and I’m really heartened to see the innovation and real push forward. It’s incredible that over the last 15 years we’ve created multiple sites (Subeta, Valenth, Squiby, Charahub) and I see the DNA of those sites in a lot of these new sites in a way that we were never able to achieve on Subeta (my fault).

WOW that was not great
So we’ll have a larger writeup on Subeta in a few days, but, wow that was not a successful launch. It’s always a little bit touch and go when we release large amounts of code at the same time, we’re a small team and can only do so much testing -- and we had been testing the survival code all week.
I will say that one major improvement that we’ve made in our *process* over the last month is spending time building our internal wiki. When we test features we essentially go down the “checklist” that we built in the previous year, which sometimes misses things (like vials in the case of survival) which can break... everything. Users that used vials totally screwed up the entire system (not their fault). Now we’ve got that added and next year will know how to check it.
I want to reiterate something I said on the forums - Subeta is not a massive corporation. Subeta has a very small team (less than 25 people), mostly illustrators, and putting out things like this requires a lot of time and focus from the small handful of staff who can push them out. The pay at Subeta is low, we all do this because we love it (and again, I haven’t been paid by Subeta in two years) and the site. We aren’t getting rich, and if we sold the site to someone with more resources you can bet you’d have more paid features, more ads, and a much worse experience. You choose, I guess.

Doing some database cleanup (and morostide) work today and came across the table that held the first version of the wardrobe user avatars.
It’s really incredible to look at this and see how far we’ve come. This wadrobe was almost entirely hard coded, with no flexibility. You couldn’t move your base layer or hide your eyes - you could add clothes and move them up and down (not even drag!!) and change a few options.
Instead of being generated on view and cached, it generated an image then that crashed it’s fair share of servers for taking up way too much space.
😍

Because we (mostly me) take an active interest in this little sandbox that we’ve created, and are interested in pulling levers to ensure that users feel like they’ve “earned” things
can someone who’s better at economics than me explain why subeta’s economy, for all its inflation problem, hasn’t quite reached neopets or gaia levels of assfuckery

Re: New Collections
Unfortunately, the minions (and collection items) just didn't sell well in the collections and in some months this year ended up costing money for us because of the way we count cash shop items (they're the items intended to make a profit because they're in the CS) and the weight they are supposed to pull. What we want to do going forward is provide five high quality items every month that are intended to pull in money (we are running a business) and hopefully that gives us the bandwidth to add minions elsewhere. Obviously the minion zoo / minion battling feature was a big focus of ours 2 years ago and that didn't pan out (but we've still got plans for it to merge with something else we've been working on) that would have been how we'd give those out. TLDR; Minions (and other collection items) were sometimes costing us money to release in this way, and so we've removed them from the collection and hope to be able to release them elsewhere on the site without the expectation of making $$.

I may steal this and put it on Subeta 💖
No. I should thank you, Subeta.
I’m thankful to Keith and staff for creating this site in the first place.
I was on Neopets for a few years til my midnight lab ray group of friends began to dissipate just shortly after the sitewide revamp and customization. Subeta became my new home when a friend gave me a link to Neocolours for me to look at the variety of Subeta pets. Seeing the Celinox helped solidify my decision to join.
It will be ten years since I joined in April of 2006. I’ve not accomplished all my goals yet on Subeta, but I’m much further along than I ever was on Neopets. And I hope the site will continue to be there, as I hope other users, myself included, will also continue to be there to support the site.
I propose a challenge for the month of December (it’s been awhile since I’ve tried to instigate one):
Share your origin of how and when you discovered Subeta. What are some of your favorite memories or moments you will never forget? Are there any friends or users you feel make Subeta a wonderful experience? Are there any regrets or bygones you would like to make peace with?
This a challenge I encourage everyone who visits here, anonymously or with an account, to please participate in. It’s a month of celebration, and it’s been a year of many ups and downs.
Let’s take some time to reflect on the good, and spread the love, even if only for awhile.
