sunday morning, got me looking crazy
a new fic by: starlightbuckk (lovesicktaxi on ao3)
Buck spirals on a Sunday morning over his boyfriend, his best friend, a Tiktok, and what it means to show up for others.
And his laundry is still not dry.
Tumblr media
Snippet:
Buck, for the record, would like to state that he is fine. More than fine actually, his best friend is just dramatic. He reminds everyone of this as they pull into the station and start to clean up from their previous job.
“Yeah Buck, maybe next time you should watch where you’re going,” Hen jokes, exchanging a look with Chim.
He scoffs, despite the slight pain in his knee…
The 118 had responded to a typical first aid call. A family on summer break had been enjoying some time by the pool, and it went south quickly when their son decided to ignore the cardinal rule of swimming—no running near the pool, he hadn’t dried himself off and ran into the house soaked from the pool. He ended up slipping, causing his entire family to follow suit—running about the property soaking wet, leaving trails of water in their wake.
Luckily, the boy was okay, Eddie and Hen checked him out and once they had confirmed he didn’t have a concussion, Bobby instructed Buck to grab some towels and start wiping up the water before anyone else got hurt.
Funny how that works.
Armed with the towels, Buck started to lean down to begin drying the floor when his boot lost its grip and sent him tumbling right on to the floor, towels flying everywhere, one even landing in the kitchen sink.
“Oof,” Buck hit the tile harder than anticipated, his knee breaking the fall.
The team froze for a moment, confused about how Buck managed to fall, until Eddie (carefully) crossed the floor, “Buck!”
“Eds, I am fine.” He laid there until Eddie’s wide eyes met his from above.

now that trump has tiktok, twitter, facebook and insta in his pocket, get ready for a massive wave of internet censorship. one of trump's greatest weapons has always been misinformation; it's going to become harder and harder to spread facts and criticism going forward. posts that aren't made invisible will be magically ignored by the algorithm. dissidents will have their accounts deleted and voices erased.
this is a suppression tactic. this is another stage of fascism.

“Pitcher Plant”
I dislike the term “pitcher plant”. It reeks of outdated ignorance and describes a vast number of species from around the world, many of which are not closely related to each other.
As a botanist, and an evil one at that, I prefer to be precise with my language. You too can become an educated scientist and terrific snob by using the correct terms for each variety of “pitcher plant”. If you require education on the matter, allow me to inform you.
There are three families of “pitcher plant”: Sarraceniaceae, Nepenthaceae, and Cephalotaceae. Sarraceniaceae has 3 genera — namely Sarracenia, Heliamphora, and Darlingtonia. Nepenthaceae has a single genus (Nepenthes), and Cephalotaceae has a single species. An entire family with only one species. Ugh.
Now, they look quite distinct from each other, so here are some photos and facts.
Tumblr media
This species belongs to Sarracenia, the North American or trumpet pitcher plants. Note the height and slender shape.
Tumblr media
This is also a Sarracenia. Note the lack of height and squat shape. Most Sarracenia species look like one of these two — they are quite easy to identify. They are found in boggy, temperate areas around North America and reach a height of up to 4 feet tall.
Tumblr media
This is a stunning example of a Nepenthes (tropical pitcher plants) species. These are what you likely think of when someone mentions “pitcher plants”. Beautiful, found in warm, humid regions of the world. They are climbing vines and pitchers can reach over a foot tall (this is species-dependent).
Tumblr media
This is an example of Heliamphora, the sun pitchers. They can be found in South America. While still belonging to the family Sarraceniaceae, they are not as tall as Sarracenia, but still quite graceful. If you have a mind for Greek, you may wonder if the “heli” in Heliamphora is for sun (from “helios”). It is not. The name Heliamphora instead comes from “helos”, meaning marsh. The name “sun pitcher” is misleading and comes from a misunderstanding — these plants would be more accurately called “marsh pitchers”.
Tumblr media
I have a passionate love-hate relationship with Cephalotus follicularis. Cephalotus is a monotypic genus (a genus with only one species) and of course it is Australian. They look similar to Nepenthes but are unrelated and much smaller — the plants reach just shy of 8 inches tall.
There are also the cobra lilies, Darlingtonia, which belong to Sarraceniaceae. Those are arguably similar enough to Sarracenia that they do not need to be discussed here. Darlingtonia is another monotypic genus within Sarraceniaceae.
Now you have absolutely no excuse. You have been informed on the major genera of “pitcher plants” and should weaponize this knowledge as you see fit.
The brilliant and brave may also wish to weaponize the plants themselves. Kindly send me updates if you do. I am ever so curious…

Do not let them erase this. Do not let them tell you he meant "my heart goes out for you."
This man is the grandson of a Canadian Nazi sympathizer who moved to South Africa BECAUSE he thought the apartheid was just the coolest.
He has a gaggle of kids specifically because he believes his genes are superior and need to be spread to improve humanity.
He has thrown his support behind the neonazi party in Germany and the far right party in the UK, not to mention how far he's wormed up the ass of the Republican party.
He threw two sieg heil salutes back to back at the inauguration of the president of the United States and is trying to scrub the evidence off the internet.
Elon Reeve Musk is a fucking Nazi.

old people are allowed to be horny. so what if your elderly neighbor posted her cowboy sex fantasy on Facebook. so what if your nana only watches westerns where the main character is shirtless 40% of the time. so what if your great aunt reads bodice rippers voraciously. they’re loving life.

I hope I live to see the day gender-segregated restrooms are a thing of the past. I’m tired of my options as an enban being to feel worried about being seen as a guy in the women’s restroom or girl in the men’s restroom, hold off until I get home—sometimes for hours, or hope against hope that there is a gender-neutral bathroom somewhere I can access. Some people can’t seem to fathom a world with restrooms that maintain privacy and safety without enforcing the gender binary as the norm forever. If you’d like to better understand the need for them and see my favorite example of such a design, check out this short video from the “Stalled!” project.

Hey. If you feel stressed or overwhelmed, try knitting. It's gonna help your body feel like it's doing something, and that's going to relieve tension so you can think straight.
Don't know how to knit? Get yourself a knitting loom and watch a couple of tutorials. The learning curb for these is super low and you can knit a scarf in the span of a week.
The looms look like this.
Tumblr media
Round ones are for making tubular stuff (hats, sleeves, socks, infinity scarves) while the long ones are for flat stuff (traditional scarves, blankets).
The part of our brain that handles survival is not the part that understands global affairs or politics. But what it does understand is that "making a sock = calm, safe." Giving yourself those moments will help you keep your head on your shoulders, AND you'll get nice knitted things out of it.
