Salamat Hashim was a member of the Ansar el Islam, the Islamic wing of the BMLO under Sen. Domocao Alonto

From 1968 to 1972 the BMLO trained and financed about 30,000 Bangsamoro fighters, men and women, in guerrilla warfare. BMLO was supported by the Confederation of 19 Royal Houses of Mindanao and Sulu and most major Muslim political clans in Mindanao and Sulu.

BMLO was supported by Malaysian PM Tunku Abdel Rahman, King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, Pres. Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, Ustaj Saleh Taynaz and Libyan Minister Saleh Bouyasir, who died in a plane crash in 1972.

MNLF emerged after it won support from Malaysia’s Tun Mustapha, head of the proposed Republik covering Sabah and Mindanao and Sulu, Libyan Pres. Muammer Khadaffi, Foreign Minister Aly Trekky and the OIC. Tun Mustapha confiscated the 2,000 FN rifles bought by Rashid Lucman in Belgium in 1972 earmarked for the revolutionary fronts in Lanao and Maguindanao.

MNLF declared the establishment of Mindanao Republik in 1972.

Origin: The MNLF was a splinter group of the Muslim Independence Movement, later called the Mindanao Independence Movement, which was founded in 1968 to work for a separate Moro state in the southern Philippines.

Gov. Udtog Matalam, brother in Law of Gen. Salipada K. Pendatun, declared Mindanao Independence when his son was killed by NBI agents in 1968. His son Udtog “Jun” Matalam Jr. was active in the BMLO.

Ideology and goal: The MNLF initially sought a fully independent state for the Moros, but its leadership accepted autonomy under the 1996 Final Peace Agreement.

Currently, the MNLF is divided in its aims, with some factions supporting MILF-government talks and the proposed Bangsamoro region, while other factions strongly oppose the proposal, insisting on full implementation of the 1996 agreement.

Major attacks:

Sept. 9, 2013 — MNLF members entered Zamboanga City and attacked government forces and took some 300 civilian as hostages.

Oct. 10, 1977 — Thirty-four military officers and soldiers, including Brig. Gen. Teodulfo Bautista, were killed in what came to be known as the Patikul massacre in Sulu province.

(MILF)

The MILF broke away from the MNLF because of ideological and political disagreements between Salamat and Misuari. Salamat Hashim accused Nur Misuari of giving away the Bangsamoro revolution to Libyan Pres. Muammar Khadaffi and First Lady Imelda Marcos through the 1976 Tripoli Agreement. Ideology and goal: The MILF formulated a policy of gradually creating an Islamic society in the Moro regions. To accomplish this, the MILF applied Islamic law in the areas under its control and believed that the creation of an independent Moro state would eventually follow.

Major attacks:

Jan. 25, 2015 — Forty-four police Special Action Force commandos were killed in fighting with MILF guerrillas and members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters while pursuing two international terrorists, including the Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan, who was reportedly killed by the policemen.

July 10, 2007 — Fourteen Marines were killed, 10 of them beheaded, while on their way home from operations to rescue kidnapped Italian priest Giancarlo Bossi in Basilan province.

“Among those in the Sulu Area Command during WWII were LTC Alejandro Suarez, MAJ Luis Frayna, CPT Kalingalan Caluang, 1LT Ismael Kiram, 1LT Abdulhamid Lukman, 2LT Adjidin Bahjin, 3LT Romulo Espaldon, and his brother, 3LT Ernesto Espaldon.

The Admiral volunteered as a guerrilla of the Bolo Battalion Unit at the tender age of 16, fighting the invading Japanese. At the time, the monthly pay of a Lieutenant Colonel was less than P600, while that of a 3rd Lieutenant was less than P200.

This book by CPT M.A. Velasquez from the library of the Admiral contains the most detailed history and roster of all the officers and enlisted men who served in the Sulu Area Command during World War II.”

Caluang Family: They are descendants of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam as they are descendants of the 7 Sharifs-Sayyids that brought Islam to the Philippines(Shariful Hashim,Bal Faqih Alawi and etc)

Jibin Arola was the survivor of the Jabidah Massacre, with his survival Ansarul Islam came into existence.

The Jabidah Massacre led to the founding of Ansarul Islam by Pamocao Alonto, Salipada Pendatun and Kalingalan “Apuh Inggal” Caluang.

The Chief Minister of Sabah by then was Tun Mustapha, he was like a brother and

had good relations with Kalingalan “Apuh Inggal” Caluang. Through Tun Mustapha’s help, the first fighters of MNLF(Like Al Hussein Caluang) were trained in Sabah after staying in Luuk, Sulu(which is now Kalingalan Caluang).

Nur Misuari became a part of the Ansarul Islam because of his good reputation as a UP professor.

After the training of these first MNLF fighters, Yahya Caluang(Son of Kalingalan “Apuh Inggal” Caluang) was asked by Kalingalan “Apuh Inggal” Caluang to fetch the MNLF fighters in Sabah. When Yahya Caluang arrived,Nur Misuari took over and declared himself Leader of the MNLF.

Nur Misuari eventually asked forgiveness to Kalingalan “Apuh Inggal” Caluang and Apuh Inggal forgive him.

By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order No9419, 4 February 1944(SectionII, Bulletin3, WD,1944),a Bronze Star Medal is awarded for meritorious achievement in the Sulu Archipelago,Philippine Islands, by the Commanding General,41st Infantry Division, to each of the following officers and enlisted men who are members of the guerrilla forces:

Your proficiency in upholding the morale of the troop, the undaunted spirit and the courage to keep on the fight despite of hardship is beyond reproach.”

•On 22 March 1945, CaptKalingalan Caluang, upon receiveing a report from Cpl Lepai that the Geyutais escaped from Solari Island, dispatched two patrols to intercept and destroy them. One patrol was under Lieut M. MOLIJON and the other, under Lieut A.BAHJIN. The latter was instructed to intercept them at Tandu Bunga near Parang village.

Some of the escaping GeyUtais were intercepted and captured by Salip MUJAALA and turned them over to “I” Co for custody. Lieut MOLIJON did not make contact with the Geyutais but he was able to recover one carbine rifle from the scene of encounter the previous day.

•In August 1943, Capt Kalingalan CALUANG, then a lieutenant, the late lieutenant Moro RUGASAAN,Sgt IMAM MARJUKIM, then a private; private Gurabi Hanud and Dr.ElbertI.N.KWOK,a Chinese patriot from Jesselton, Borneo arrived at Batobato in a Kumpit from Borneo bringing aid in the form of cashloans and donations amounting to ten thousand($10,000.00) British North Borneo dollars, some clothing,quinine and stationary.

Sufism in the Philippines

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim In The Name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful

Allahumma salli `alaa Sayyidinaa Muhammadini ‘l-faatihi limaa ughliq, wa ‘l-khaatimi limaa sabaq, naasiri ‘l-haqqi bi ‘l-haqq, wa ‘l-haadi ilaa Siraatika ‘l-Mustaqeem, wa `alaa aalihi haqqa qadrihi wa miqdaarihi ‘l-`azheem. O Allah, bless our Master Muhammad, who opened what was closed and sealed what was before. He makes the truth victorious by the truth and he is the guide to Your Straight Path. And bless his Household as it befits his immense stature and splendor.

Allahumma inni as-aluka fahmal-nabiyyen wa hifdhal mursaleen wal malaaika al-muqarrabeen. O Allah! I ask You for the understanding of the prophets and the memory of the messengers, and those nearest to You.

This paper aims to expound on Sufism, it’s concepts, history in the Philippines and Muslims who are antagonist of it.

Sufism, also known as the science of Tasawwuf, has many meanings attached to it both by its practitioners and enemies. It is widely known definition came from two root words which are Safa or Purity and Suwf, referring to a wool cloth. In simple terms, Tasawwuf is the science of Ihsan and purification of one’s self for the love of Allah. It involves certain Tariqas, practices and litanies. The counterpart of Tariqas in the catholic faith are the spiritual orders like the Jesuits,Franciscans and Dominicans. Many tariqas now exist in the Philippines with their respective followers scattered around the country. Despite of their peace-loving nature they have been subject of abuse from the Wahhabis.

Contrary to what the enemies of Tasawwuf believe, Sufism is not a sect in Islam. It is one of the Islamic sciences and a treasure of the Muslim Nation. Most of the Sufis are Sunnis while only minority of Shias claim to be affiliated to it. As Sayyiduna Shaykh Muhammad Adil Rabbani, the spiritual leader of the Naqshbandi Aliya path, said: “Sufism is the essence of Islam.” It is also important to understand that the terms used by Sufis did not exist in the time of the Prophet Muhammad alayhis salatu was salam yet its essence already existed since his time. One of these terms is Tariqa which is an Arabic word for path,way or order. The Sufi masters have emphasized the importance of following a Shaykh and a path from their saying “Whoever does not have a Shaykh, his shaykh is shaytan.” Non-Muslims would relate more to Tariqa if we translate it to mean as spiritual order. There have been many tariqas that existed throughout the Islamic history but now there are only 41 major tariqas. The 4 acknowledged by many scholars as the main tariqas are the Naqshbandi,Qadiri,Shadhili and Chisti.

In these different tariqas, certain practices and litanies are done by the mureeds as recommended by their Murshids. These involves voluntary ritual acts of worship, prayers upon the Prophet Muhammad alayhis salatu was salam, remembrance of Allah and litanies of the saints. Along with these remolding one’s character to be in line with the prophetic character is also done. This actions are in reference to the Hadith Qudsi: My servant continues to draw near to Me with voluntary acts of worship so that I shall love him. When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him…” Hadith Qudsi (Sahih al-Bukhari, 81:38:2), And the Ayah: Qul ateeAAoo Allaha waalrrasoola fa-in tawallaw fa-inna Allaha la yuhibbu alkafireena( Say: “Obey God And His Apostle”: But if they turn back, God loveth not those Who reject Faith.) 3:31. Some known practices of Sufis in our country are Mawlid, Gatherings for Isra wal Mi’raj, Reciting surah Yasin on Nisfu Sha’ban, Visiting the graves of the pious ones and Tahlil Arwah. These practices have been preserved until now despite the increasing adherents of Wahhabism who are very antagonistic of it claiming these are non-Islamic practices.

Sufism arrived to the country with the arrival of the Sharif Sab’ah or Lumpang Basih. These were the Sufi missionaries who brought Islam to the Philippines. Since then some concepts of Tasawwuf became mixed with the existing spiritual beliefs of the people in the south. These led to the development of Indigenous Islam or Ilmuh kamaasan. It is best described by Professor Yusuf Morales as “an indigenized amalgamation of Islam from the preceding schools of thought and local cultural customs. This is actually contextualized and simplified according to how the elders have understood Islam and the process of Islamization of the communities.” This, in turn, became a treasure of the Moro culture and tradition. Among the Tausugs of Sulu, it became a heirloom for the succeeding generations.

Accordingly, Ilmuh kamaasan is so wide and each family or master of it possesses a unique part of it. Nowadays, there’s a decline of its practitioners mainly because of two reasons: The growing numbers of Wahhabis who declare it as Bid’ah or Shirk and the immaturity of the present generation to carry such special knowledge. According to Sayyiduna Shaykh Khaled Abou El Fadl the rise of the Wahhabi ideology was due to the wealth of Saudi Arabia and retreat of the very rich cultural elements in the Islamic tradition like the Turks, Malays and Filipinos from the mainstream picture. This is because the nuance that they brought to the picture and the traditions of spirituality are remarkably rich nuances

There are already many practitioners of Sufism in the country coming from different social status. The Tariqas that are present in the country are the Naqshbandi Aliya, Naqshbandi Chisti, Qadiri, Rifai, Shattari, Rifai Qadiri Shadhili, Tijani and Khalwati. Among them the Naqshbandi Aliya tariqa have the most followers which are in Manila, Cebu,Zamboanga, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi. The ameer of the Naqshbandi Aliya tariqa in the country is Sidi Khalid Ismael and there are also separate Kadeems for the different areas. Some of the Sunni scholars from Temboro are Naqshbandi Chistis. There are also Sufis from the students and alumnis of known universities like the ADMU, ADZU and WMSU.

The Sufis and the science of Tasawwuf was widely accepted by Sunnis in the country. However, with the rise of Wahhabism, there are already many Muslim Filipinos who are against it. This is primarily due to the misconceptions, lies and fabrications of the Wahhabis. They labeled Sufis and Sufism as either Kafir,Mushrik or Bid’ah. This is not surprising since Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab along with the Wahhabi scholars after him committed many atrocities to the Sufis. Some of these were the desecration of the graves of the Saints, abuses to the Sufis and murders of Sufi masters. Even the ISIS killed many Sufi scholars in the places they have invaded. The Wahhabis and Salafis have this audacity to speak of Tasawwuf when they have not even a single knowledge of it. These arises from the bigotry and zealotry they have engrossed themselves with.

To illustrate a point of what was stated, let us refer to a simple analogy. Common sense would dictate that if you need to consult someone of a sickness you have you would go to a doctor and not an engineer, likewise, if you need to consult someone for constructing a building you would go to an engineer and not a doctor. Additionally, even someone would read all the books of a certain field of study this would not qualify him to speak of it without its proper understanding. Information and knowledge are different things, especially in our present time wherein most are overwhelmed by information yet deprived of true knowledge. Knowledge, Understanding and Practice are also distinct from each other. One may possess one but be deficient of the two. In the science of Tasawwuf, practice and experience are the core of it. One is not a Sufi if he has not tasted nor experienced the secret of this exalted science. Therefore, non-Sufis should refrain from talking about Tasawwuf, be humble enough to its practitioners, conquer their zealotry as well as their bigotry and prove their claim that they only wished for the well-being of the Muslims.

This should make us realize of the value of Sufism in our country and our present situation today. Sufism, the essence of Islam, which is based from the love of Allah and the Prophet Muhammad alayhis salatu was salam is effective for countering and preventing violent extremism. There have been no Sufi who became a terrorist and called for the killing of their brothers in humanity. The Sufi masters have always highlighted ,both in practice and in teaching, that Sufis should be of service to God’s creation. They have also been good exemplars for tolerance and compassion to everyone despite the differences and flaws we all have. It would also be beneficial in the character reformation of our youths today. This would improve their Adab to everyone, especially to their families which is the foundation of our community. This would then lead to the improvement of our society.

The name Ba’Alawi itself is a Hadhrami contraction of the terms Bani ‘Alawi or the Clan of ‘Alawi.

In the early fourth century Hijri at 318 H, Sayyid Ahmad al-Muhaajir bin Isa ar-Rumi bin Muhammad al-Naqib bin Ali al-Uraidhi ibn Ja’far al-Sadiq migrated from Basrah, Iraq first to Mecca and Medina, and then to Hadhramout, to avoid the chaos then prevalent in the Abbasid Caliphate

The name ‘Alawi refers to the grandson of Sayyid Ahmad al-Muhajir, who was the first descendant of Husain, Muhammad’s grandson, to be born in Hadramaut and the first to bear such a name.

Salawaatu ‘Llaahi ta`ala wa malaa’ikatihi wa anbiyaaihi wa rusulihi wa jami`ee khalqihi `alaa Muhammadin wa `alaa aali Muhammad `alayhi wa `alayhimu ‘s-salaam wa rahmatullaahi ta`ala wa barakaatuh.

Sinabi ni Sayyidina `Ali, “Kung babasahin mo ang salawat na ito ng tatlong beses araw-araw at isang daang beses sa Jumu`ah, ito ay parang nabasa mo na ang salawat ng lahat ng Nilikha, kabilang ang mga in, jinn, mga anghel, at anumang bagay na gumagawa ng salawat sa Sayyidina Muhammad , at dadalhin ka ng Propeta sa pamamagitan ng kamay patungo sa Paraiso.”

صَلَوَاتُ اللهِ تَعَالَى وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَأَنْبِيَائِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وًجَمِيعِ خَلْقِهِ عَلَى مُحَمِّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَلْيِهِ وَعَلْيِهِمُ الْسَّلَامُ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالَى وَبَرَكَاتُهُ . وَرَضِىَ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى عَنْ سَادَاتِنا أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ أَجْمَعِين وَعَنِ الْتَّابِعِينَ بِهِم بِإحْسَانٍ وَعَنِ الْأئِمَّةِ الْمُجْتَهِدِينَ الْمَاضِين وَعَنِ الْعُلَمَاءِ الْمُتَّقِينَ وَعَنِ الْأوْلِيَاءِ الْصَالِحِينَ وَعَنْ مَشَايخِنَا فِي الْطَرِيقَةِ الْنَقْشْبَنْدِيّةِ الْعَلِيّةِ، قَدَّسَ اللهُ تَعَالَى أَرْوَاحَهُمُ الْزَكِيَّةَ وَنَوَّر اللهُ تَعَالَى أَضْرِحَتَهُمُ الْمُبَارَكَةَ وَأعَادَ اللهُ تَعَالَى عَلْيْنَا مِن بَرَكَاتِهِم وَفُيُوضَاتِهِم دَائِمًا وَالْحَمدُ للهِ رًّبِّ الْعَالَمِين

`Alaa ashrafi ‘l-`alameena Sayyidina Muhammadin salawaat.

`Alaa afdali ‘l-`alameena Sayyidina Muhammadin salawaat.

`Alaa akmali’ l-`alameena Sayyidina Muhammadin salawaat.

Bilang karagdagan sa salawaat ni Sayyidina `Ali, ang salawaat na ito ay ibinigay ni Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ sa isang pangitain ni Sultanul Awliya Shaykh Sharafuddin ad-Daghestani قدس سرّه, na nagsabi, “Ang pagbigkas ng salawaat na ito kahit isang beses sa iyong buhay ay mas mabigat kaysa kung ang buong Nilikha ay nakatayo. dalawampu’t apat na oras sa salawaat, inuulit ito sa buong buhay nila; ang salawaat na ito ay magiging mas mabigat sa Scale at ang lahat ng kanilang salawaat ay pinagsama!”

Sa Pinakamarangal sa lahat ng Nilikha, ang Sayyiduna Muhammad, mga pagpapala.

Sa Pinakamahalaga sa lahat ng Nilikha, ang Sayyiduna Muhammad, mga pagpapala.

Sa pinaka Perpekto sa lahat ng Nilikha, ang Sayyiduna Muhammad, mga pagpapala.

Ang mga pagpapala ng Diyos (Kataas-taasan Siya!), ng Kanyang mga anghel, ng Kanyang mga propeta, ng Kanyang mga Sugo, at ng lahat ng nilikha ay para kay Muhammadﷺ at sa pamilya ni Muhammadﷺ; nawa’y ang kapayapaan at awa ng Diyos (Kataas-taasan Siya!) at ang Kanyang mga pagpapala ay mapasa kanya at sa kanila. Nawa’y kalugdan ng Diyos, ang Mapalad at Kataas-taasan, ang bawat isa sa ating mga Guro, ang mga Kasamahan ng Sugo ng Diyos, at sa mga sumunod sa kanila sa kahusayan, at sa mga naunang dalubhasa sa pangangatwiran ng batas, at sa mga banal na iskolar, at ang matuwid na mga banal at kasama ng ating mga Shaykh sa kagalang galang na Naqshbandi Tariqa. Nawa’y pabanalin ng Diyos (Ang Dakilang Siya!) ang kanilang mga dalisay na kaluluwa, at liwanagan ang kanilang mga pinagpalang libingan. Nawa’y ibalik sa atin ng Diyos ang kanilang mga pagpapala at nag-uumapaw na biyaya, palagi. Ang papuri ay sa Diyos, ang Panginoon ng mga daigdig,

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ ❁ الْفَاتِحِ لِمَا أُغْلِقَ ❁ وَالْخَاتِمِ لِمَا سَبَقَ ❁ نَاصِرِ الْحَقِّ بِالْحَقِّ ❁ وَالْهَادِي إِلَىٰ صِرَاطِكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمِ ❁ وَعَلَىٰ آلِهِ حَقَّ قَدْرِهِ وَمِقْدَارِهِ الْعَظِيمِ

Allahumma ṣalli ʿalā Sayyidinā Muḥammadini l-Fātiḥi limā ughliq(a), wa l-khātimi limā sabaq(a), nāṣiri l-ḥaqqi bi l-ḥaqq(i), wa l-hādī ilā ṣirāṭika l-mustaqīm(i), wa ʿalā ālihi ḥaqqa qadrihi wa miqdārihi l-ʿaẓīm.

O Allah, send prayers upon our master Muhammad, the opener of what was closed, and the seal of what had preceded, the helper of the truth by the Truth, and the guide to Your straight path. May Allah send prayers upon his Family according to his greatness and magnificent rank.

HALAGA NG IJAZAH, SANAD AT SHAJARA:

Imam Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak (Allah be pleased with him) said:

“Isnad is part of religion (deen), and if it was not for Isnad, one would have said whatever one desired. When it is said (to the one who speaks without an Isnad): “Who informed you? He remains silent and bewildered.” (See: Introduction to Sahih Muslim, 1/87, al-Jami’ li akhlaq al-rawi wa adab al-sami’ and others)

He (Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak) also stated:

“The one who seeks matters of his deen without an Isnad is similar to the one who climbs to the roof without a ladder.

Sufyan al-Thawri (Allah have mercy on him) said:

“Isnad is the weapon of a believer. When one does not possess a weapon, then with what will he combat?.”

Sayyiduna Imam Shafi’i (Allah have mercy on him) says:

“The example of the one who seeks Hadith without an Isnad is of a person who gathers wood in the night. He carries a bundle of sticks not knowing that there is a snake in it.” (m, meaning, he gathers and collects all types of narrations, the genuine and spurious, ).

The Ijāzah is a unique and cardinal feature of the Islamic tradition, arising from the earliest times to ensure a degree of protection and accuracy to the transmission of knowledge.

It is described that , Those whose name is being remembered , Those Wale Allah’s Holy Roh (Soul) Mubarek comes to us , although we are unable to see it .
