Sending my gf into the shop to get me vape liquid because the last time I went to acquire nicotine dressed in lolita the shop owner loudly announced to his assistant that ‘Cinderella needs two packs of Marlboro double clicks’ and like. Let me get this clear: I’ve been cornered by large groups of men in egl before, I’ve had enough pictures taken of me without my permission to fill up a family sized photo album, I have had people lift up my skirt to see what makes it puffy. I have not let any of that effect the way I operate whilst wearing lolita.

But that specific string of words took me out in its absurdity and I haven’t smoked cigs since and also haven’t went into a shop in lolita since. So, thank you to that shop owner??

Dress review- Gorgeous JSK (Angelic Pretty- 2002)

I got this dress for a ridiculous steal and could not pass it up- I’m an AP brandwhore and that very much extends to their older pieces as well. With the price and the age of this dress I thought that it would have to be subject to restoration works galore as did my self fabric bow hem lace skirt (AP-2004) but it’s in,, perfect condition?? Massive props to the previous owner(s) for taking such good care of it.

As with most old school, the construction on this is stunning. There’s so much lace and so many frills I don’t really know where to look first. The waist ties are quite cool. Instead of being attached at the side of the dress they’re attached to the front of the bodice. This creates a belted look which I haven’t really seen in any other dress before. I’m not mega familiar with old school construction, if this was a common design choice then show me more examples of it !!! It’s got a black tulle built in petticoat, perfect for hellish U.K. summers so I don’t have to layer up and give myself heatstroke.

Overall, this lovely old thing certainly lives up to its name. It’s a gorgeous jsk indeed !

💞2025 Purchases💞 (yap incoming)

Last year I sold quite a lot of my old wardrobe. Stuff I’ve had since I was 13/14- which was a mix of lacklustre quality taobao, impulse purchases and classic dresses I haven’t worn in literal years and was holding onto because I’m entirely too sentimental. I bit the bullet and threw them all on Vinted/lacemarket. So my wardrobe has been pretty empty for a while now.

This year has been fab for finding holy grails and wishlist pieces- most notably the Honey Cake Tokyo special set jsk (bottom pic/headbow is from the 2019 mto instead of the original set barrette, at some point a monster came in the middle of the night to split a special set up) I’d seen this specific hybrid set float around British/European second hand markets for a couple of years- I’d never been in the financial position to afford it. The stars aligned for once and I snatched it up.

The honey cake special set has been my personal white whale for years- although it’s unknown exactly how many of this specific release were made, I spoke to a couple other owners of the Tokyo special set jsk and estimates for the yellow colourway are at about 5-8 dresses. The second I found this dress 6 years ago whilst browsing lolibrary I made it a person goal to own it. Honey cake is one of my favourite prints of all time, but I’ve never fully liked the bib bodice of the switching jsk or the frill-less bodice of the round jsk. I think the Tokyo special set is very elaborate in its construction. It has pockets + a built in petticoat (BRING THEM BACK AP) the front waist bow is comparatively huge when judged against the other jsk cuts. It’s everything a stupid little 2010s ott sweet supremacist like me would want.

The other big purchase of mine recently was the Milky Chan the Fawn Necklace Style JSK in white. Over the past couple years I’ve noticed a massive, massive resurgence in the love for this print. This has lead to the obvious and the price for this dress (and it’s accessories) has skyrocketed like hell. I have a complicated past with this print- I owned a very bad oo jia (??) replica of it when I was a literal child (11-12) and I was tricked into thinking it was authentic. It left a sour taste in my mouth and I would never imagine myself regaining my affection for the little pink deer. But over time I found myself falling in love with the print again, pulling myself away from mercari lest I spent £600+ on an op with no waist ties or a ‘full’ set with pieces missing.

Luckily for me (and my bank account) I found a heavily yellowed milky chan necklace style jsk at a very very reasonable price. I’m no stranger to fixing up staining and damages (joys of being dyspraxic in expensive, delicate clothes) so I decided to take a shot at it. After a couple of oxi baths I’m happy to say that I saved both the dress and my bank account a lot of pain and sorrow!! The details on this dress are amazing- three types of lace, the faux gem detailing. It’s so decadent and lovely. The dress itself is also LONG. It’s a good few inches longer than most of my other ap pieces. I’m 5ft/153cm and it goes slightly past my knees. The skirt can hold a ridiculous amount of volume, definitely break out your poof monsters for this one.

an interesting piece of lolita history has popped up for sale a couple of months ago - a nearly 40 year old cutsew with a "Pretty" (Angelic Pretty) tag, but a "Baby The Stars Shine Bright" on the care instructions tag inside.

Back then, AP was a select shop called "Pretty" that resold other brands, it wasn't until the rebrand to Angelic Pretty in 2001 where they began to produce and sell only their own clothing designs. The seller guesses that this is "probably clothes that were created before BABY, THE STARS SHINE BRIGHT became independent as a brand and was sold under the Pretty tag" - something so rare as to have both an AP/Pretty tag and BTSSB tag, in near-perfect condition; this should be donated to a museum!!
