Get Ready For Reggae

Join the fun during one of our biggest events of the year.

It’s that time of year again. The snow is soft, temps are warming up, and we’re getting ready to put on one of the biggest spring parties on the East Coast – Reggae Fest. From April 12th-15th, come out and enjoy non-stop live music by some of the nation’s top reggae artists including The Movement, Through The Roots, New Kingston, and more. And not to mention, spring skiing conditions are going to be all-time thanks to more than five feet of natural snow this spring.

 BRING: 

Style

The age old saying that “looks aren’t everything” doesn’t apply to spring skiing – so dress accordingly. Style points go out to shredders dressed in retro ski outfits, neon colors, epic costumes, chicken onesies, and of course your traditional red, yellow, and green. Time to hit the thrift shop or raid your parent’s storage unit – the brighter the better.

Sunblock

Saturday is often quite literally a “day at The Beach”, with non-stop live music on the outdoor stage starting at 11am – and once the good vibes start flowing the last thing you want to deal with is a sunburn. We recommend doing your best to protect your skin with SPF and a hat or visor, but we know some of you guys are going to be working on your goggle tans. Just remember – it’s supposed to be a goggle tan, not a goggle burn.

Sunglasses

In case you want to ditch your goggles altogether, now’s the perfect time to crack out your sunglasses. Partly for style points, partly because we’re enjoying that warmer weather again – and mostly because no one likes squinty-eye-selfies.

ID

All evening concerts in the King Pine Room and Widowmaker are 21+, so make sure not to leave your ID at home.

Bumps and Slush

There’s nothing like skiing some bumps and slush in the spring – in fact we wait all winter long for it. Make the most of your time on the slopes by checking out some of our legendary bump runs including Bubblecuffer, Skidder, and anything in the King Pine area.

Lunch (and music) at Bullwinkle’s

It’s well-known that The Beach is the place to be for mid-day music during Reggae Fest, but did you know we’ll also have bands playing at Bullwinkle’s? That’s right – you can go and enjoy reggae beats without ever taking your skis off (unless you want a beer, of course). Just head on over to your favorite mid-mountain restaurant for some good food, cold drinks, great music, and even better company.

Children’s Festival Week

This week, kids rule, and the whole family can join in the fun.

We get it, last week was tough. The kids were cooped up inside for days just trying to stay out of the cold. They’re bored. They’re restless. And you’re exhausted. Well parents, temperatures are finally warming up enough to let the kids get out and play in the snow – and just in time for Children’s Festival Week. We have a bunch of fun events planned that the whole family can enjoy, especially our smallest Sugarloafers. Plus, the snow is super soft thanks to last week’s storm. Get out and there and enjoy it – you might even feel like a kid again yourself.

Here’s some of the fun activities we have planned:

Children’s Festival Welcome Party

Children’s Festival Week kicks off on Monday with a party in the Narrow Gauge room at the Base Lodge. The fun includes free hot chocolate, balloon animals, a Sugarloaf Snowcat, and a chance to meet other Sugarloafers, including some of your favorite characters – Amos the Moose, Pierre the Lumberjack, and Blueberry Bear.

The party runs from 4-5:30pm and is immediately followed by a glowlight parade and fireworks display out on the Beach.

Kids vs Parents Races

Alright kids, time to show Mom and Dad who’s really the boss. Head to Boardwalk for a Kids vs Parents race. If the terrain on Boardwalk is a bit too challenging, then head over to The Birches to race on another, smaller course. Children in lessons will also get the chance to race on these courses.

Races will run from 1-3pm on Tuesday.

Bullwinkle’s Dinner with Amos and Friends

Take a ride in one of our snowcats up to Bullwinkle’s for our first ever Bullwinkle’s Character Dinner ON Tuesday. Families are treated to a dinner buffet, and kids get to hang out with Amos the Moose and Friends. Live music will be provided by family entertainer Jason Mancine.

Seatings for the event will take place at 5:15pm and 6pm, and the cost is $35 per person. Reservations are required. Call 1-800-THE-LOAF to secure your spot.

Family Ski-a-long

Now’s your chance to take part in your child’s ski education. Grab a front-row seat or learn alongside your kid when you join their team. Stay for some or all of the afternoon lessons.

This event takes place starting at 1pm on Wednesday.  

The Luminous Lollipop Loppet

Get ready for all kinds of fun at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center’s first ever Luminous Lollipop Loppet on Wednesday. Families can go snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, or ice skating using headlamps and glow lights. Free rentals and free hot chocolate will be available. Bring a headlamp if you have one.

A shuttle to the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center will leave Base Lodge at 4:30pm and arrive back at 6:15pm. Parking is also available at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center for families who prefer to drive.

Pool and Pizza Party

After a day on the slopes, head to the Sugarloaf Sports & Fitness Center for free pizza and swimming. Of course, it’s not a real party without some music, so we’ve hired a DJ for the event. Families will have free access to multiple Sports & Fitness Center facilities including the pool, racquetball courts, and weight rooms.

Party takes place from 4-6pm on Thursday.

College Snowfest Snap-enger Hunt

We’re putting on a scavenger hunt this College Snowfest. Want free swag? Get snapping…

Happy New Year, Sugarloafers! We’re kicking off 2018 with College Snowfest, a four-day party with live music every night. To add to the fun this year, we’ll be doing our very first Snap-enger Hunt, where we’ll give you free swag for sending us snaps on the mountain. Here’s how you can participate:

Follow us on Snapchat (sugarloafmaine) Check our story for hints on where to take photos. Without saying where, we’ll describe a location on the mountain. Go to that location and take a snap. Make sure it’s clear where you are.  Add the Sugarloaf geofilter.  Swipe across your screen until you get the filter that says “Sugarloaf”. Add it to your story, and send us a snap.

The first person to send us a snap from the correct location will win a prize. One prize will be given out per location. In order to pick up your prize, you have to send us a snap and add it to your story. We’ll reply to let you know if you won.

This week we’ll be giving away some awesome swag, so make sure to keep your phones fully-charged. The competition starts on Wednesday – but you’ll have to check on Snapchat to know what time the first hints have been dropped.

Stay Warm and Ski More

The cold never bothered us anyway, but just in case...

We’re no stranger to cold weather here at Sugarloaf, but this week is supposed to get particularly chilly. Fortunately, we’ve mastered the art of staying warm, so we’ve decided to pass on a couple tips. The more you know, right?

Know Before You Go

Always check the weather before you head out for a day on the slopes. You won’t know how to dress unless you check the weather, temperature, wind speed, and humidity – all major factors that affect how cold it might get on the slopes that day. Keep in mind that due to changes in elevation, different weather conditions can exist on different parts of the mountain. If you’re not sure how to interpret your local weather forecast, check out Sugarloaf’s daily report, where we’ve taken out most of the guess-work for you: www.sugarloaf.com/daily.

Take Advantage of Heated Products

From hand warmers to heated boot liners, heated products are one thing we can count on to help keep us warm regardless of the weather outside. Don’t have any? Lenz heated gloves and Hotronic heated insoles and socks are available for purchase at Downhill Supply Co. And just in case your batteries run out, make sure to stock up on a pair of hand warmers, which are available for purchase in just about all of our retail locations and lodges.

Layer Up – Properly

It’s important to wear clothes that’ll keep you warm, but not so warm that you’re sweating. Make sure not to overdress. On slightly warmer days, wear synthetic layers that will wick away sweat while still letting your skin breathe, then on colder days crack out those wool layers. Get cold toes? Your base layers might be the culprit. The only clothing that should be tucked inside your ski boots is your socks. To avoid uncomfortable wrinkles that can cut off your circulation, we recommend wearing three-quarter length base layer pants - also available at Downhill Supply Co.

Take Care of You

Your body needs to be in prime condition in order to carry out important tasks, such as generating heat on a cold day. Help your body help you by fueling up in the morning and throughout the day, staying hydrated, and getting enough rest.

Stay Active

This might sound redundant during a day of skiing, but make sure to stay active. Whether you’re standing on the side of a trail or sitting in a chair for an extended amount of time, you can get you cold fast on a chilly day. So do your best to keep moving. Rub your palms together, shake your ankles out, or play a couple hand games. If all else fails, take a minute between laps to do some jumping jacks or run around a bit. It might sound silly, but it’ll keep you warm.

Don’t Ignore Frostbite

Still can’t seem to heat up? Don’t ignore it if you’re feeling too cold. Frostbite can have lifelong consequences, and even on a powder day, staying out is just not worth it. Take the time to go inside, kick your boots off, order a hot cocoa, or take a seat by the fire pit – Bullwinkle’s is the perfect mid-mountain pit-stop for chilly days. And when you’re ready to head back out, the slopes will be waiting.

Celebrate With Sugarloaf

Make this holiday a ski holiday.

We might be a little biased, but we think the best place to spend the holidays is here at Sugarloaf. There’s no better way for the family to experience a white Christmas than to get out and enjoy the snow. Check out some of our can’t-miss activities and events below to make this holiday season extra memorable.

Horse and Carriage Rides

It might not be a one horse open sleigh, but it’s pretty close. Rides will be offered free of charge from 3pm-5pm on Tuesday, December 26th. Meet at the front of the Base Lodge to participate.

S’mores on The Beach

Come and enjoy one of our favorite wintertime treats at your favorite mountain fire pit. Roast some free s’mores at The Beach from 3pm-4pm on December 27th.

Family Entertainment with Mr. Magic

Prepare to be amazed by a magic show that’s fun for the whole family. This special event will take place at 5pm on December 27th in the King Pine Room. Tickets are $5 per person, but ages five and under get in for free.

Climb For A Cure

Give back this holiday season by attending the first event of the 18th Annual Sugarloaf Charity Summit. Skin, hike, or snowshoe up to Bullwinkle’s at 4pm on December 28th and enjoy drinks and treats when you reach the top. Registration is from 10am-4pm at Guest Services, with a suggested donation of $10. Bring a headlamp, and have a plan for getting down the mountain, as transportation will not be provided.  

Amos & Friends Dinner

Head to the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center for an experience that both kids and parents will enjoy. Families eat a buffet-style Italian dinner, and kids get to hang out with Sugarloaf’s favorite characters – Amos the Moose, Pierre the Lumberjack, and Blueberry Bear. This event starts at 5pm on December 28th and costs only $5 for children and $12 for adults.

Family Lessons

Learn and ski with the whole family when you book a family private lesson. Perfect Turn also offers Bear & Cub lessons for children and their parents. Parents get to join their child’s lesson and learn tricks for teaching their kids how to ski. Kids must be at least two years old.

Fireworks on The Beach

2017’s going out with a bang. Head to The Beach December 31st at 9pm and celebrate the New Year with free fireworks. Then, once the kids are in bed, check out The Crown Vics at The Widowmaker and dance until the Ball drops.
