Wow. I mean, I'm a progressive for sure, but it's astounding the amount of people calling classics "shitty books" in relation to these tweets. Yeah, most have racism, sexism, etc. etc; but the reason we call them classics and must-read works of literature is 1) Because they capture a time period much like a primary source and are invaluable to understanding the mindset of people throughout history and 2) Because the WAY most of them are written is unarguably one of the best demonstrations of the mastery of language and story telling ability. Racist or not, the style of these books and their ability to completely enthrall readers as they have for decades (and even centuries) are undoubtedly necessary for future generations of writers, regardless of whether you agree with the themes or not. And for that matter, if you hate them so much, study them! Write an even more powerful novel that captures an even greater audience with your progressive themes and become part the new generation of what will one day be called "classic works of literature." These authors did something right in the way they were able to articulate their thoughts on paper, and it's unbeleivably arrogant and frankly offensive claiming classics are "shitty" as if there isn't a reason they're STILL being analyzed today by people who have dedicated their lives to understanding literature. News flash: English professors are not all racist bigots, they just understand the aforementioned significance of these works and seek to better utilize these tools for the future. Classics have always mattered and likely always will, and certainly not for some kind of glorification of their archaic themes.

I mean, the minute @bransrath said "[Life and the universe] show design. This is evidence of a creator" it was pretty much over for them. That's entirely subjective and has never been a factual arguing point for religion. I could just as easily argue that the universe in its innate randomness shows no design. But hey, logic kind of goes out the window when you have nothing substantial to back up your beliefs.
