How did small towns work? Miles knew that it technically wasn’t a small town but in comparison to New York City it definitely was and, apparently, in this place it was possible to know all of one’s neighbors. That was… concerning? He tilted his head at the girl. “No worries, I, um… I just wasn’t expecting so much fanfare, I guess.” He attempted at a joke that, to him, seemed to have fallen rather flat. “I’m Miles, nice to meet you Taffyta. Are you a member of the Welcome Wagon? I seem to have skipped that part of entering town.” This universe sure had some unique names.
“ miles, what a cool name! i don’t think i’ve met a miles. ” as soon as he mentioned the welcome wagon she let out a chuckle. “ you could say that! i’m surprised you haven’t ran into any of my friends before. there’s quite a few of us running around town. i like to think we’re the welcoming committee around town. ” even if other people didn’t see them that way. “ what parts of town do you usually hang around in? that’d probably explain how i could miss someone so interesting. ”

❝ YOU’RE SUCH A GREAT FRIEND T , ❞ Adira gushes , cheeks rosy from anticipation . As yet another successful game comes to an end , the raven haired girl finds herself glancing around the arcade , bustling with a sort of energy that revs her up . Twisting one of the many rings adorned on her fingers , she decides to speak up yet again , ❝ I doubt he’d be pouty if he saw the numbers you pulled though . It’s insane . Like we all know practice makes perfect , but what is beyond perfect ? Forgive me for sounding like a broken record , but this is just so exciting . I think my highest score here is at Crossy Road and DDR and like , it’s just not the same . Should we celebrate with a treat ? ❞
taffyta was never one to stop the kind words her friends had for her. how rude would it be for her to just interrupt them? as adira continued on, taffyta threw some hair behind her shoulder as she shrugged. “ one can only hope he’d be as kind as you, but you know how boys are. rancis is no different. ” she turned to face adira as she began to mention her own personal scores. while they weren’t exactly taffyta’s favorite games, she did play them. besides, she loved having a group that could hold up their reputation. “ hey, i mean those are no small achievements! i think a treat would be the PERFECT way to celebrate! ”

* SCAMP
“do you always talk in riddles, or are you ever going to give me a straight answer?” he asked her, frowning. scamp brushed a hand through hit hair self consciously, thinking about what sort of style his brother has now. “what’s interesting?” scamp crossed his arms, holding them closer to his chest, trying to protect himself. “i don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“ how is telling you how you could be your brother considered a riddle? ” was the world just changing definitions on her now? “ your dynamic with your brother. it’s interesting. ” taffyta couldn’t help but smile as she watched him seem to shrink up. people always liked to tell her she had an ego larger than she deserves but it was actions like that that got to her head. was it a bad thing? who’s to say? “ okay, i can pretend not to see this whole fit you’ve got going on. if that’ll make you feel any better. ”

There are simply days when all one can do is go grab a coffee and pretend as though copious amounts of caffeine will fix your problems. Thanks to Honey, Miles knew the best spot in town to grab a cup and hide away in the corners. He’d brought with a notebook and several pens, working through calculation after calculation. He had to admit quantum physics was certainly not his subject of choice, being more of a calculus and chemistry guy himself.
He had gotten up a few times for refills, not looking at the clock since he didn’t exactly have anywhere else to be beside Go Go and Honey’s couch, but had otherwise remained stationary. It wasn’t until he felt eyes upon him that he looked up from his work and blinked.
“Um, h-hi? Can I help you?”
it wasn’t out of character to see taffyta visiting crumble, even if cara wasn’t working a shift. it was convenient, good, and helped a friend’s family business. she usually knew the people who visited crumble but as she waited for her coffee her eyes landed on someone she had never seen before. that was unusual-- taffyta was the self proclaimed information hub around town and she knew everyone. so who was this? it didn’t take long for the other to notice her staring at him ( she wasn’t very subtle about it ) so once she got her iced caramel latte she made her way over. “ hey! sorry for staring, i was just thinking about how i don’t think i’ve seen you around before. which is weird, especially for a town like this. i’m taffyta. and you are...? ”

* SCAMP
scamp began laughing, leaning back in the chair as he held onto his sides. “does that mean i look similar enough that i could take his place?” he almost sounded excited, knowing there was a possibility he looked quite like his brother. “actually, no. he left when i was a kid, so i wouldn’t say we were really close, but i did hero worship him when i was younger. i just need, want answers.”
“ you just need to style your hair a bit differently and maybe grow an inch or two? it’s been a minute since i’ve seen him, ” she answered with a shrug. “ hm. interesting. ” she had no idea that tramp had walked out on his own family, leaving his brother behind. she didn’t know nearly enough about the people around town as she’d like to. “ it seems like you still hero worship him by the looks of it. ”

* JUBILEENA
“ well…to be fair….even i want a taste, ” leena giggles, twirling a lock of her dark hair around a freshly manicured finger. kit and his friends we’re some of the most eligible bachelors in carthay, so of course leena had been crushing on the older men ! “ she also had the audacity to say we were a f r a i d of her the other day. it’s kind of sad, taff. i think she’s become delusional. i mean … she really thinks she’s going to beat your high score. ”
“ yeah, that sounds like you! ” one of taffyta’s favorite hobbies with jubileena had always been eyeing the guys around town, especially since they’ve been close since elementary school. still, taffyta was always hesitant to actually say anything about the men around town. upon hearing about the glitch’s bold assumption, a laugh escaped her lips as she shook her head. “ i’m sorry -- she thinks we’re AFRAID of her? she must be spending too much time with that weird forty year old man she hangs around with. H E L L O, is anyone gonna call the cops on that friendship? he’s, like, twice her age. do people just think that’s normal? ”

* JACK-JACK
“That’s a pretty wild thing to say about a friend, but okay.” Jack-Jack didn’t like those people that talked like they made someone who they were. Like Jack-Jack’s parents didn’t make them a genius, this chick didn’t make Cara a master Instagrammer. At the mention of Nemo’s name, Jack-Jack’s eyes narrowed at Taffyta. They looked back at the root beer and forced themself to laugh, knowing they’d start to get pissed off staring too long. “Ah, you don’t know shit, man. Nothing happened.”
“ it’s an honest thing to say about a friend. ” taffyta knows the reputation of the racers has skyrocketed all of them in a positive way-- including herself. she just would never say it out loud to anyone else. “ if i don’t know shit, why do i know you guys have been more distant than ever lately? i mean, it’s kind of sad ‘cause he’s got that other group and you... well... ” taffyta simply shrugged, knowing she didn’t need to say anymore. she knew he was friends with some of her own friends ( or acquaintances at the very least ) but at this point he was grabbing from other groups.

* CARA
“And have you seen all those reusable cups?” she asked, disbelief all over her face, “I mean, I love reusable cups, and we already have changed to paper straws months ago, and we’re working on our own reusable ones…” Cara added, “But they have like, forty options! You don’t need that many kinds of cups,” she sighed. “If I started refusing people my dad would have my head… Or at least fire me for, like, a week,” Cara laughed. She shrugged her shoulders though, waving the thought away with her hand, “Anyway! How’ve you been? I feel like we haven’t hung out, just the two of us, in forever.”
" honestly, the fact that they’ve made about eight million when any reasonable person only needs, perhaps, two of them is out of control. they should’ve just made one in every color and stopped there. and even that’s pushing it. ” as someone who bought a lot of things, she felt she knew what would work well for a company and what would not. “ i still think you should have the racers help you with designs. i mean, imagine just how cute they’d be! ” she gasps. “ it would be just like the clique books! when they made lip gloss for their school project! each cup represents a different racer in a unique way, but like, we could totally find a way to make it not as obvious. ” taffyta reached for the water bottle she’d placed on the ground next to them and took a sip before properly answering cara. “ i know! it feels like a crime! ” taffyta always tried her best to hang out with each racer, but with nine of them, splitting her time could be awfully difficult. “ i’ve been good! just trying to keep myself busy. attempting a summer internship is hard work! but luckily i can reward myself with mani / pedis every other week. what about you? besides doing your boss thing at crumble, what have you been up to? ”

* ANNA
“Yes, it’s just not the same as talking,” Anna said, with an overly-dramatic sigh, “Like if I do that then I forget half the stuff that I”m going to say and what if there is a great idea that I had and I didn’t share it with someone and I forgot about it? Then the world would forever be out that idea and that could just butterfly effect into something bad. Like causing the Matrix to happen,” which seemed like a bit of an extreme example, that just seemed to come from Anna’s current late-night binge watching.
“ haven’t you heard of, like, youtube? that’s all people do on that site. you can ramble on and on and on and on in the hopes of finding like-minded people who can follow along with everything. ” these days, every desperate teen was talking into a camera they impulse bought with their graduation money in an attempt to garner some sort of following. something the racers never had any problem with. “ you should start paying me for this advice. it’s rare i just give it out for free. ”

* DOT
the curly haired blonde wasn’t above judging others, in fact, it’s how she could figure out who was worth surrounding herself with. and taffyta was never very kind to her or her friends so to her, she was another nuisance in a town that could probably do better. but people had the capacity to change, but it wasn’t up to the girl to make that happen. rolling her eyes, dot pierced the paper cup next to the girl before shoving it in her trash bag. “make it worth your time? look,” she responded sarcastically. “if you’re going to be on the beach during a clean up, you’re going to have to clean otherwise, find somewhere else to do nothing.”
“ sorry dot, i wasn’t aware you owned the beach and therefore could tell other people what to do on it, ” she replied, tipping her sunglasses down an inch so she can make proper eye contact with the other blonde. “ i think i’ll stay here, though. i do my part by not making any messes in the first place, and i do enough volunteer work on my own time. ” nothing looked better on a resumé than giving your time to a noble cause. “ i see lots of other people lounging on the beach but you chose to come bother me. for what? why can’t you go bothering other people who, i don’t know, actually brought trash with them? ever think about that? ”
