update and hiatus

hello! i return with two terrifying words. not to worry, the important part is i hope to be fully back by winter.

the explanation is under a cut with a medical cw for eye stuff.

in june, i noticed my left eye was getting blurry. thinking it would clear up, i kept pushing back an optometrist visit. unfortunately i was diagnosed with a detached retina. this was a result from an untreated retinal tear and because we caught it so late, it impaired my vision permanently.

it’s been a long process to re-train my eyes and i’m still struggling to work through it. it’s been a really tough and demotivating time, but i’m grateful for the people around me for supporting me. however this means that soa is going to go on official hiatus because i’m physically unable to write at the moment. i hope everyone understands.

Do you have a release date for SOA?

yes and no! i have an approximate time i want to release it (the yes), but coding is getting on my last nerve (the no) so it's up in the air for now. i'll probably go looking for betas once i'm closer to being finished!

What are the RO's love languages?

oh god this is about to get really long. breakdowns are under the cut! (and warning for mild spoilers)

aine is physical touch

kaj is quality time

miyeon is words of affirmation

james is acts of service

love languages are so much fun to think about about as a framework, since all the characters have multi-faceted methods with how they approach relationships with people they love. (james would like you to know he is FLUENT at ALL OF THEM.)

i agonized over assigning them one over the other because i thought it through with the mindset of: "holy crap how would they approach showing affection to the MC?" so in the end these are their primary Relationship Love Languages i settled on. (some of these were close. like, really, really close.)

aine was a tossup – i first went for quality time because it seemed obvious. if aine is spending time around you when they could be spending time alone, it's a big thing. they're very attached to their solitude. ultimately i went back and looked at all my writing, and i came to the quick realization how much they have a tendency for physical affection (hand placed over yours, arm over the shoulders, leaning on someone) and went Oh, Oh I See.

i wouldn't say they long for touch, because that kind of insinuates that they've gotten over the vehement denial stage. it's unconscious in how they gravitate towards physical touch as an anchor. touch is an important way for them to express their feelings because sometimes they find themself at a loss for words, and hugs and such are a good way for them to get the emotion out.

kaj was an easy one to assign! they're busy, they're closed off, and they're very, very dedicated to their role. while they're good at speaking and good at being thoughtful, they desperately need time from their day to be away from people and just relax. they have a draining, demanding job, and the fact that they choose to spend time with you means that they find you comforting.

it's something they genuinely want to do, and it's a display of trust and affection that they can put down their guards and just Be In The Moment.

miyeon "talking about my emotions? funny joke, haha" lee ended up surprising me the most (incredibly) by being words of affirmation. she's very mercurial. long-term stability just isn't her thing, so i figured that like kaj, sticking around was a display of love. but i was super wrong.

she's not afraid to express her opinions on a topic and is especially never one to shy away from insults, but talking about her own feelings is something she avoids like the plague. she associates it with vulnerability, and that's [redacted] for [redacted] reasons. it means a lot if you're on the receiving end of her pure, unfiltered honesty. she's essentially baring her heart to you.

james was hard, because he embodies most (if not all) of the love languages. he's physically affectionate, he loves giving compliments, he loves spending time with people, and he loves giving things to people. initially i leaned towards giving/receiving gifts, because he spoils people frequently. even when he was a kid he'd save up allowance and gift money just to shower his mom in presents during the holidays. james was the one guy who just carried around a pack of gum to hand out to his buddies.

but it ended up being acts of service. james is impulsive, yes, but it's the same impulse that leads him to want to do things. like help tend to houseplants, make sure the curtains and blinds are shut if they have a headache, find nice music for them to unwind to, etc. he's very loud with his love, but it's the little, quiet acts of consideration that really shows you how much he cares.

how old is the MC? and how old are the ROs?

mc doesn't really have a specific age. beyond being over 21, everything else is up to reader choice/headcanon.

for the ROs, aine is nearing a thousand, kaj is a couple centuries years old, miyeon looks like she's in her mid-to-late twenties, and james is approximately three years older than the mc.

do you have any faceclaims for the characters?

kind of? i have a couple of different people that i handpick facial features from but not one singular person that i can point to and say "that's so-and-so right there."

i'm terrible at visualizing faces so it's more of a crutch for me than a strict guide.
