“Nil—” Aloy reached for the scarf over her eyes, but Nil caught her hands and gave them a light squeeze. He didn’t let go, leading her up a small sand dune.

“I would’ve thought patience was something you learned when you learned to hunt,” Nil teased, no doubt with a grin on his face. She tried to tug her hands from his, but he held firm. “Trust me, Aloy.” She did. Trust him. (And she nearly melted every time he said her name.) He was just insufferable. And she couldn’t fucking see. “We’re just about… there.” 

He stopped her in place, releasing his hold on her, only for his fingers to brush against her face as he removed her blindfold. She gasped, unwittingly, then swallowed. Steady, Aloy…

For the first moment she regained her sight, all she saw was Nil gazing back at her. She smiled at the sparkle of anticipation in his eyes. 

She caught a glimpse of the holos in her periphery and looked up to find shimmering hearts in the sky. She laughed lightly—the ornament she’d found all those months ago on the Long Coast, finally in action.

In the time she’d taken to admire the lights, Nil had left her side. Aloy turned and found him kneeling on a blanket next to a small, low table adorned with a freshly lit lamp and food. 

“Oh… when you said dinner I thought…Well, I don’t know, actually…” 

Nil smiled at her, and she relaxed. “Would you like to sit?” She took the spot across the low table from him and surveyed the spread of food. “I tried my best to get the things you like best. Sun wings—not too spicy, but I didn’t hold back entirely. Maizebread, maize courtesy of some Carja in No Man’s Land—” She opened her mouth to squawk about how he went that far east to get grain, but he kept going— “The children helped collect the fruit across the Clan Lands. No one managed to find watermelon… wrong time of year, I suppose. We’ll have to try in the summer. I also cobbled together some cheeses and nuts and things because I know you like to snack after a meal—”

“Nil,” she cut in. His gaze flicked to hers. She swallowed, blinking a few times. “You didn’t have to go to all this effort just for me.” 

She had mentioned Valentine’s Day the last time she’d been at the track. And she had hoped he would make a… gesture of sorts. But she expected. Flowers. A race. Maybe a dinner in Hidden Ember, without the children around. Not such thoughtfulness.

His brow furrowed and he tilted his head. “That's why I did it. For you.”

“No, I know, but I just…” Aloy sighed and put her face in her hands. “You love me.”

“Hm?” She dropped her hands to her lap, fiddling with the pink and purple linens of her Utaru outfit, but didn’t meet his unwavering stare.

“You love me,” she said, repeating the words she’d mumbled a moment ago.

“Well, yes. Is that not what Valentine’s Day is for? Love?” 

“That’s the idea…” She finally dragged her eyes up to find Nil’s. Grey and open and full of that love. 

“I won’t apologize for doing this for you, Aloy.” Her gaze dropped to his lips as he spoke, goosebumps running up her arms at the way he said her name. Her own twitched into a smile.

“I know,” Aloy said as she leaned over the table and kissed him. If he was surprised by it, she couldn’t tell. He matched her pressure, letting her lead—though a knuckle hooked under her chin told her he didn’t want her going anywhere, at least not yet.

When he stroked the line of her jaw with his thumb, she tried leaning further over and nearly fell into their dinner. He steadied her, smiling that smile she was so fond of. She smiled back and touched her forehead to his.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Nil.”
