Your touch had been so simple, so absent-minded, that the words caught you off-guard when they left N’s mouth. The desperation in those three words, however slight, made your heart twist in a moment of unfolding realization that was hardly new to you–simply a reminder.

All the things that the man never got, never experienced. Everything from the simple troubles of childhood to the complex issues of being a teenager. A first kiss. A first date. Of novel issues and worries that most young adults worry about–the man never had any of them, thrust instead into a world of disillusioned royalty and made to believe in twisted fragment of what the world really was.

But most importantly in this moment, the realization consists of the fact that N has never really enjoyed the touch of another human like this. Not before the two of you had tumbled into romance together and found yourself in love that at times seemed as beautiful as it was heart-wrenching in the moment that you glimpsed at the full extent of the man’s past neglect.

Your fingers had been running through his hair, long locks of soft emerald that reminded you much of early spring, when the grass was new and the flowers just ready to blossom. Loosened from the ties normally worn, it was all too pretty to look at how it cascaded down the man’s shoulders–and prettier still to play with as he laid over the couch with you, head in your lap while the TV hummed something or another in the background of the room.

So you put your fingers back to his hair, combing them through with a bittersweet smile on your lips.

“Does this feel good?”

N nods, head turned so that his face is almost nuzzling into your lower belly and hands tucked into the fabric of your shirt.

That at least softens the moment; hearing the man’s soft whimpers of gentle comfort, of knowing that he could take such relief in your touch.

And you left your hands as they were before, idly tugging through his hair, your whispers soft and sweet whenever the man made a noise, happy at least that he trusted you enough to share a moment as intimate as this.
