Note
Hi! I’m a big fan of your writing. I love SJ so much, and I once saw a post that said that SJ has a lot of the ticked boxes that MXTX’s other protagonists have, which I agreed with and since then have been greedily reading anything on him I can. Your works are some of the best.
I did have a question about Chrysalis! I like that SJ plots and uses his body to get things he wants/needs, but could I have a little clarification after the QQQ scene? She scratched his chin, and then over the next couple days SJ scratched his neck open to make LQG guilty. Was he making a new wound and hoping people thought it was from QQQ? Or did he want people to think he did it himself out of Sad Caged Bird Syndrome since it was on his neck instead of his chin?
Anyway, you keep giving hints of all the plot points that are going to come in that fic and I am on the edge of my seat. I’m ready for the bad and the good!
I hope spring (if you’re in the northern hemisphere) is treating you well, or that autumn is too (if you’re in the southern hemisphere)!
Happy to answer any questions :) I do have to apologize for this being a bit late. Life has been busy.
Shen Jiu's cut was the same wound, but he had irritated it enough that it wasn't healing correctly. A bit inflamed and heavily scabbed by the time that Liu Qingge attention was caught -- which is exactly where Shen Jiu wanted it to be. A reminder that, once again, Liu Qingge was responsible for him being hurt.
Shen Jiu might not understand why Liu Qingge cares that he is hurt, but the Sect Leader clearly does (ex. ensuring that Shen Jiu got adequate medical supplies for wrists post-chains and for rash post-riding). It's one thing that Shen Jiu knows will get Liu Qingge's attention at that point. And it does.
It wasn't really meant to imply that Liu Qingge was aware of Shen Jiu hurting himself, though it wouldn't be out of a left-field. Liu Qingge does know that Shen Jiu planed to kill himself if life post-conquering was too horrible.
Honestly, Shen Jiu's mind is twisty so whatever reading you get from it isn't really wrong. Even if it doesn't match completely with my original intent. Part of the beauty of reading is having your own interpretation.
Ahhh. I'm glad the little pieces of the broader plot are coming through! It will take a bit for them all to come fully to light, but it should be (hopefully lol) a fun ride to read.
Thanks for the ask, Anon ❤️
p.s. Spring has been wonderful where I am. Easily one of my favorite seasons. Hope your weather has been good too :)

hello!! could you tell us about the behind the scenes for your svsss fic, chrysalis? i LOVE your shen jiu characterization in it!! it keeps the meat of him (spite and nastiness and manipulation and empathy) and you handle him EXCELLENTLY. it's beautiful. please tell us more
Ahhh. You're so sweet! I'm so glad you've been enjoying my fic so much. Still feels a little wild that people do sometimes.
The whole premise for Chrysalis started after I thought of the scene where Shen Jiu meets Liu Qingge, War God of Bai Zhan, with the blood on his hands and a willingness to die. I wrote out a few lines of dialogue, a bit of description, and then tucked it into my ideas page. Except this idea would not leave me alone. In the course of about a month and a half, I managed to write 30k or so as I slowly figured out where exactly I wanted to go with the plot.
The core of this fic is the power imbalance between Liu Qingge and Shen Jiu, so one of the first choices I made was for Shen Jiu to be mortal.
Who would Shen Jiu be if he didn't join a cultivation sect? It's a really interesting question to me, cause he's a character so invested in gaining and maintaining his own power. Yet, Shen Jiu does come from nothing. It isn't something foreign to him to be the underdog.
My one big fear with writing Shen Jiu is flattening his character too much. It can be easy to do. My own morals very much don't align with his, so I have to really brainstorm what he would actually do. It is very fun to write, though. Adds a layer of tension into each scene as he tries his best to find anything that could potentially be useful (and he thinks the most out of pocket things sometimes).
Chrysalis!Shen Jiu outwardly appears to be a kind person, which is a pretty big departure from PIWD!Shen Jiu. He's far more skilled with soft power, then the hard power that the Qing Jing Peak Lord wielded. No one could touch Shen Qingqiu, because he was second to only the Zhangmen of the Sect (well, until PIWD!Luo Binghe). Chrysalis!Shen Jiu doesn't have the position to fall back on to. His entire life is currently in flux, so he is doing everything he can to ensure that he will both survive and flourish to his best ability.
One of the ways I was able to really let Shen Jiu's manipulative tendencies shine was with Luo Binghe. I didn't go into writing this fic thinking about adding Binghe, but I quickly realized I needed a few characters that Shen Jiu could sink his hooks into. And Liu Qingge—as the love interest and, you know, his blunt and hard headed self—wouldn't have really worked.
There is some spoiler territory stuff with Luo Binghe as well, because adding him created some fun ideas/openings in the plot. Will hopefully be fun when the revelations happen ;)
On the less spoiler-y side, adding Luo Binghe had another effect: paralleling canon. I had a lot of fun exploring how Chrysalis!Shen Jiu reacted to pendant scenes. It was actually one of the first few scenes that I roughly drafted while I was hammering out Shen Jiu's characterization. Luo Binghe is a potential ally, so of course he is trying to be nice and helpful—on the outside. Shen Jiu is still spiteful, envious, and bitter. The situation just calls for him to hide it.
I guess the answer to how I've kept him in character was to simply not change his internal characterization overmuch while his outward actions have completely shifted on account for the situation he is in. As the fic progresses, he'll go through some character growth -- though it might be a bit, mm, rough at points lol
It's a bit late for me currently, so hopefully this made sense! Thanks for the ask, anon. Always enjoy chatting about my writing.
#sorry if this was a bit long#i tend to ramble#as evident by my struggle to write anything short lol#answered asks#my writing#chrysalis#there is also the parania and fear that really underlines SJ’s actions#he’s like a feral cat sometime#unwilling to trust an extended hand bc he’s been hurt by one before

Ao3 version that lets you open the 'director's cut' where I, the author, explain every detail in excruciating detail to you and what it is in reference to.
#if anyone wanted behind the scenes of any of my fics#i’d be more than happy to give so many details#but this post did remind me of a mdzs fic that had a sequel that did exactly this#it was glorious#so fun to see the author’s thoughts and choices laid out

Finally recovered from being sick, so I’ve been working on the next chapter of my fic, Chrysalis. Hoping to be done with it in the next few days. Until then have a snippet 🩵✨
Liu Qingge reached forward to grip Shen Jiu around his waist, but Shen Jiu stepped atop the blade by his own power before the cultivator could succeed. Liu Qingge's eyebrows drew together, but he said nothing, simply stepping up behind Shen Jiu a moment later.
"Didn't we have opposite positions before?" Shen Jiu hissed, uncertain, as Liu Qingge wrapped a steel-strong arm around his waist and pulled him tight against his chest. He could feel the strength in the hard planes of his chest despite the thick layers of silks and fur that lay between them.
"I needed speed then," Liu Qingge said, mouth pressed close to Shen Jiu's ear. It sent a shiver down his spine. "This will ensure you won't fall over during the long flight."

Chapters: 8/?
Shen Jiu expected death in return for delivering his lord husband's body to the War God of Bai Zhan, the man at the head of the conquering army. Instead, Shen Jiu finds himself claimed by Liu Qingge as his concubine—and, yet, remains untouched.
In the coming days, Shen Jiu resolves to do anything to secure a life for himself. What does he care about the people he might step on if it means finally having the power he always wanted?
-
In which, Shen Jiu was sold to a lord instead of committing mass murder, became a concubine, and is then stolen away by Liu Qingge for reasons he cannot figure out.

how do you think shen jiu's backstory would differ from canon in omegaverse?
I would say largely the same but with an addition of intentionally trying to poison/starve himself just enough to put his own presentation off as long as he possibly could. (Qi-ge said he was coming back for him. He said he would be there before Shen Jiu presented. Neither of them doubted for even a second that Shen Jiu would be anything other than an omega and what that would mean for him in that house—).
It wasn’t enough.
He presented as an omega.
And that damned house burned.
After he led the (non alpha) women, children, and omegas to safety, he finds another way to suppress all signs of his secondary gender (doing a not insignificant amount of damage to himself in the process that doesn’t help with the whole probe to Qi deviations thing) just in time to be found by Wu Yanzi who believed him when he said he was a beta.
That damage that he did to himself is also why he is worried enough about Shen Yuan to bring an unknown male omega back to his home because he knows exactly what being suppressed (as he suspects) or even a late presentation (as Mu Qingfang later claims with a confused frown that says he doesn’t entirely believe it himself) can cause. The fact that Shen Yuan claims he had a Qi deviation that wiped out most of his memories a few months before they met only serves to further convince him that he made the right call.

I looooove the shit that's like
"You have the power to possess me and take over my body but you don't because you respect me"
because it can lead to
"I'll let you possess me and take over my body when necessary because I trust you"
#writing refrence#it would take a lot of time and patience and built trust#but sj and sy sharing a body is such a fascinating concept to me#especially if it could evolve into them being happy together

Back with some more Dom/sub au LiuShen
Despite being a Peak Lord, Liu Qingge is a renowned Sub. What makes him unique is his unnaturally strong resistance to Doms.
Most of the Peak Lords are doms, and those who are subs are on a herbal regime to increase their resistance to Doms. This is to help in combat to not be swayed by Dom opponent's Voice. This can also be trained.
Liu Qingge has never needed this.
In fact, he is seemingly unaffected by the most powerful of Doms. Many of which come to try to see if they're Commands and Glare are enough to penetrate through to his Sub instincts.
All have failed and thus had their asses beaten off Bai Zhan peak.
Post transmigration, Shen Qingqiu has made it a point to not use his Dom qualities. He knows the Original Goods had it at the ready and he definitely didn't want to abuse it in his quest to continued to live later on.
But when Lqg arrives for his regular meridian cleansing, he's right in the middle of a bad flare up from without a cure. In his pain he doesn't even remember that it was the day for his treatment. So distracted and trying to overcome the welling fear and anguish after Luo Binghe 's fall into the abyss. He's been trying to hold it together but he's been... Snippy.
So when Liu Qingge walks in, Sqq's snaps to the door and he is immediately pinned to the spot by the intensity of his shixiong's Glare.
He's been the target for Shen Qingqiu's glare before and had no trouble shrugging it off. But this was different. His knees bucked in record time, goose flesh rippling up his back as he stood there. His hand gripping the door frame, his only support to keep his knees from hitting the floor.
Shen Qingqiu notices and shakes his head, breaking the moment and leaving Liu Qingge wrestling with the need whine.
"My apologies, Shidi... That was... inappropriate." He sighs sadly.
Liu Qingge realizes he wouldn't mind at all of his shixiong continued to be 'inappropiate'...
