If money wasn’t so tight, there’s no way Y/N would be doing this.

She’s thought it over a thousand times, running every possible scenario and outcome in her head. More often than not, those scenarios end badly.  Yet here she is, standing at the edge of stairs that lead to a gym below the streets of New York City.  Men push past her to get below, muttering quick apologies as they bump into her. None of them are sincere, she notices, but why would they be?  They don’t care about her.  Y/N, on the other hand…she’s being paid to care about them.  They’re why she’s here.

The offer had been posted on a bulletin board in the nursing student’s lounge on campus.  It was a crumpled piece of paper, with a handwritten message scribbled across it.  Y/N had spotted it when she was looking at the board for a summer job, and the uniqueness of it caught her eye.  She had pulled it down from the board, reading it over.

How do I know if I….like girls….like did you always know? I never never ever thought I did but there’s this one girl and I 😩…..like I just don’t know because surely one doesn’t find out they like girls when they are fully grown 24 right?

i can assure you i did not always know!!! i had crushes on boys from a very young age. i was obsessed with romance. i wanted it so badly all through high school. i went on dates with boys from dating apps and kissed them and obsessed over boys in my classes and wrote passionate songs about them. and then when i was 19 i began to wonder if maybe i kind of sort of liked girls, and then when i was 23 i began to wonder if i maybe kind of sort of didn't like guys. i am now about to be 26 in a couple weeks and i can confirm that i am super gay and it almost seems comical how much i missed when i was younger!! how much i ignored!! the difference between what i felt for boys and what i feel for girls!! so i can assure you, many people discover they like girls when they're in their twenties. you have permission to discover this about yourself.

at 23, it felt way more scary to think i may not like boys than it had been to think i may like girls. it was terrifying to shift my focus and decenter men from my life, especially when i'd lived my whole life searching for their validation to feel like i was worth something. and i was so sure that i couldn't possibly be a lesbian, because surely i wouldn't have kissed boys and tried so hard to date them!! surely i would have known better!!

the thing that helped me the most, especially when grapelling with being a lesbian, was just calling myself one and seeing what happened. i didn't tell anyone else. i didn't change anything else about my life publicly. i just decided to call myself a lesbian, and i thought that if it stopped feeling right, i would stop saying it. and then it kept feeling right. i kept living my life, and i got a girlfriend, and i began quietly corrected people when they referred to me as bi, and i started to get a little more confident each time i said it to myself in the mirror, each time i wrote it in my journal. i whispered it to myself in the dark, and soon it stopped feeling like a dirty word, like it wasn't something i could claim. now it's been three years, and i am so proud to call myself a lesbian. i can't imagine myself as anything else.

tldr; yes. people absolutely find out they're queer in their 20s and 30s and even 50s. if the label feels intimidating, don't worry about it. shoot your shot with the girl and go from there. there is no time limit on discovery. good luck!
