Day 86... The End

Thank you to all that followed me through my adventures this summer. I am happy to report that I did not end up in debt, although it was indeed quite sunny in California. 

Woke up super early this morning to pack (and also to try to get my sleep schedule on track). A last look before I left...

Panoramas are cool. 

Jing treated me out to brunch on our way to the airport. Unfortunately, my stomach was really not feeling well so I barely ate anything...

And then I left California. The end. Well, almost.

Plane ride was good, I spent a good chunk of time praying and then doing some coding. Glad to say that the mini-TV in front of me was off the whole time until the last 30 minutes when I had to put my computer away. 

Did you know Delta can stream a bunch of TV channels like ESPN now??? wow!

Haha, funny how that will be the last picture I post on this blog. Thank you again for joining me on this wild ride. It was a summer to remember forever.

Day 85

Last day...

Woke up this morning and went to do laundry, before getting to work around noon. Did a bunch of knowledge transfer today - I was the one that was writing on the white board today!! Wow!

I wasn’t really sad until I was saying bye to people today. My mentor: 

So many people still at the office when I left at almost 9..

Ended the day with a lot of laundry folding and a call.

Day 84

As my time here comes to a close, it’s really hard to not feel like I’m going to miss the memories I made here in California. Sure, I didn’t like how expensive everything was, and I didn’t like certain aspects of my job, and my apartment wasn’t great, but I’m gonna really miss my team/coworkers, the work I’ve been doing at Amazon, working life in general...

I’ve given up on making the change to my sleep schedule - it’s 12am again. I had to help the person on my team who’s taking over my unfinished project understand what’s going on today. My manager scheduled an hour...for us to go over all 5000 lines of code I wrote this summer. Yeah that’s almost 100 lines per minute. I can’t even read a novel that fast, let alone understand the novel, let alone understand my own code, let alone explain the code to someone else who’s never seen it in their life...gah. This honestly should have been a week-long process. I don’t know why they waited until the end to do it. 

I forgot to take a picture again today. So here’s an impromptu one.

Day 83

2 weekends ago, I was very very tempted to start packing, but eventually convinced myself that I was crazy and set the earliest date I could pack to be last weekend. And then somehow all of last weekend was super busy and so was the majority of this week. And now it’s Wednesday night and I’m about to go to sleep and I leave Saturday morning and my suitcases are still in the closet??? There are still empty water bottles lying around?????//?///??

You know, I wasn’t even going to stay up late tonight. Finished preparing my demo at 4, got ready to make my presentation. Probably could’ve left work by 6, latest 7. Spent time packing. But then my mentor asks me to implement ANOTHER feature. Gah...And then it becomes 8:30pm. I did end up finishing though, and got my presentation done by 11:30. So much for sleeping at 10 tonight...

I will admit, I did not make the most use of my evening time. I decided to go home early instead of leaving work after I finished everything, so that the time I spent on the train wouldn’t be wasted. Which was a good idea. But once I got home, I spontaneously started calling this fool...

Stress. Deadlines are coming up for work. And I don’t think I can make them, yikes. Might have to stay super late tomorrow night. Cannot believe that I only have three days left...

Day 81

About 3 weeks ago, Uber offered me this deal that was like I pay 20 dollars a month or something for a pass, and then it gives me 15% off or something on all my rides. I was in a hurry but I quickly did the math, and it came out to be basically I had to spend about 150 dollars on Uber to make it worth, so I decided against it. 

Such a bad decision. I think I’ve spent like 200 dollars on Uber in the past month. Sad.

I will be waking up at 8:30am EST (5:30am PST) next Sunday morning for Sunday Celebration. Sleep schedule plan for the rest of the week (in PST) to slowly get there:

Day 79

Quite the day today. Went to San Francisco with some coworkers. I need to start preparing my sleep schedule for going back to Michigan next year, so I’ll save some time and let the pictures do the talking :)

This group, together with the guy I showed pictures of a few days ago, was the people I spent the most time with this summer. (Our WeChat group name is called 加班群 -- aka overworking squad LOL)

One of the things that I’m gonna miss most from this summer is all our lunchtimes together. We’re all from the same Amazon team, and I definitely spent 90%+ of my Monday-Friday lunches with at least a few of them this summer haha

Day 78

So uh, I got the job that I stayed up late applying for a few days ago! Praise God :)

In the afternoon, got to hang out with some of the other interns on my team at the game room: 

When I talked about playing ping pong with Daniel or Frank in the past, this was the table.

Left work to go home early-ish today. But on my way home today, the train I was on hit a car...

Luckily, nobody was hurt. But while the police were investigating, the train was stuck in the middle of nowhere, and nobody was allowed off the train. Luckily, I had my computer so I just started working. Ended up taking an hour or so for everything to clear up. It’s kind of scary - I heard someone say that there are around 20 deaths per year from just Caltrain alone...

Sorry I’ve been so bad with pictures lately. I’ve simply been forgetting to take them.

Woke up before 10:30. Yawned 100+ times today. So tired. I need sleep.

Day 75

Hi. It’s currently 3:36am. Let me explain how this happened. 

But first, the happy stuff: 

a quick last dinner before one of the interns leaves tomorrow (three of them finished last Friday - I’m the only Chinese intern left :/)

It was also one of the interns’ birthdays! 

It was a lot of fun just hanging out with them again!

So anyways, why am I up at this odd hour? Well, last week I just randomly applied for this one university job for the fall (super casual, didn’t even give my resume or anything), and today, during dinner, I got a followup! But they wanted a response QUICK. Because school is starting soon lol. 

So at like 9-10pm, I head back to the company (instead of going home like previously planned) to make a video. Because Amazon has lots of white boards that I can use so it was nice. The video took forever. But actually, I am partially to blame because a few other people came back with me, and I ended up chatting with them about office politics (and everyone sorta ranting about our manager lol) for almost two hours. And then I finished recording my video finally at around 1:30. Definitely by far the latest I’ve left the company lol. 

This is Allen. He’s the guy leaving tomorrow, and also the guy I’ve come to know the closest hear at Amazon. Of my 10 weeks here at Amazon so far, the only day that he left the office before me was the day that he finished his final presentation (he left at 7 that day, whole team was in shock lol). Whenever I stay late, he’s there with me. Half the times when I go in on the weekends to work, he’s there too. I’ve spent a lot of time with this guy this summer, especially those late nights HAHA. He even stayed this late with me tonight, just to give me a ride home because all the trains had stopped running - what a nice guy! I’ll definitely miss him, but I’m sure I’ll be looking to visit him when I come back to the area, so this won’t be a goodbye, just an until next time. 

Anyways, yeah, came home. Edited the video. Uploaded it. Fixed up my resume. That took forever. Sent out the email reply, with video, with resume. Thank goodness I used Boomerang to delay sending it out until a normal hour on the clock - I had forgotten to attach my resume at first, so because it didn’t actually send out when I pressed send, I was able to go back and attach it with no problems. Yikes. It’s 3:47 now. Goodnight. How am I gonna wake up properly tomorrow...

Day 73

Church in the morning - went to one called Emmanuel Presbyterian Church today with some friends. It was a Korean church (I went to the English Ministry) and it actually reminded me of Harvest in a lot of ways; I really enjoyed the service, and the sermon was especially good as well. Ate lunch with them as well, then came home and chilled. 

At night, video called same friends and played a card game called Fish. New game - a lot of memorization, and I enjoyed it.

Day 72

Today was a really chill day. Woke up in the morning, sent off Daniel, then went and did laundry. Went back home to drop off laundry, then went to get my eyes checked out, and then got a new pair of glasses! Then came home. Chilled, played tetris, ate dinner with Joseph, chilled more. I like Saturdays like this, where I’m not focusing on work.

This is just some random view of one of my neighbors’ houses. Took it while I was taking a walk today. I think what really makes the scene beautiful for me is the clear blue sky in the background. Other than Chinese food, 100% what I’m gonna miss most here in California.

Day 71

My manager met with me today, and one thing he said that really frustrated me was “we’re a bit disappointed about the pace at which you did this internship, we know you’re a bit inexperienced so we understand, but yeah”

Um hello? My work has been completed on time or at times several days early this whole semester? I have literally never fallen behind? The reason I didn’t meet my goals was because my mentor has been swamped and hasn’t looked at the majority of my code so I can’t do any integration, and that’s the only milestone that I haven’t hit? 

Yeah, all they look at is results. Even if it’s not my fault that something happened...it’s my fault. 

I’m not even gonna take a return offer to this company even if they offer me one. So why was I so upset today when I heard that I might not be getting one? Ugh, pride issues. 

Came home and worshipped/prayed for a bit. I’ve been lacking this so much this summer, glad to be getting back into it.

Day 70

Today was pretty meh. Woke up super tired even though I got a good amount of sleep. Was originally planning on going to IV small group today, and then they had this fellowship event of ‘late night playgound hopping’ which sounded pretty fun and which I rsvp’d for. But around 6 I dunno, I just started feeling really tired. Ended up wrestling with whether or not to go for several hours, prayed about it a little bit, and then ended up getting on the caltrain and went home. 

I just didn’t want to be with people today...

Came home and worshipped by myself for an hour, which was actually really good for me. Really needed it.
