I would like to formally apologize for flooding yalls feed with every story that runs through my head.

Riri Pov

Shuri and I are on a well deserved vacation. After defeating Talokan she asked me to be her girlfriend and things have been great ever since. Now, there are No worries, No stress, and No evil fish people to fight. It’s just us on the beach.

“We really needed this vacation.” I tell her.

“Yeah, I love the beach. But any place with you would be a vacation.” Shuri says.

“Aww you’re so sweet. Come here.” And Shuri leans in closer…..

“Riri… Riri…RIRI!” Shuri’s panicked voice snaps me out of my daydream. “That is a very powerful tool. You could lose a finger if your not careful.” She takes the tool away from me. “Maybe that is enough for today. I know it’s important that we finish this ASAP, but we don’t stand a chance against Talokan if you’re not 100% here.”

“I’m sorry. I was just… honestly I don’t know what I was thinking.” Seriously, what the hell is wrong with me. Of all the things to be worried about right now, I’m daydreaming about dates with the princess… queen…. Damn.

“No need to apologize. You should take the rest of the day off. Ayo, please escort Miss Williams to her quarters. She needs a break.” Shuri turns back to me. “Please get some rest. I need you.”

“Ok.” She needs me? “I’ll be better tomorrow.” Probably not the same way I need her.

“I know you will. Everything will be just like you left it. Have a good night.” Shuri walks Ayo and I to the door and watches until we are out of sight.

The walk to my room is awkwardly quiet. I’ve met Ayo before, but we’ve never held a conversation. I’m still not used to the presence of any of the warriors. But, Ayo in particular is intimidating as hell! You have to be if you’re going to lead the rest.

“Is something troubling you Miss Williams?” Ayo’s voice snaps my attention to her.

“Besides the obvious?” I ask.

A small smile graces her face. “There are more obvious things about you than you think.”

That makes me stop walking. What does she mean? She can’t possibly know that I have a small tiny little crush on Shuri.

She turns to face me. “Call it woman’s intuition.” She pauses for a second. “Shuri is something else isn’t she? Even under all this pressure and through all the unfortunate circumstances, she holds her head up and moves forward…… She’s not too bad on the eyes either.”

“Ohh no. I thought I was at least being a little secretive.” Pressing my palm against my head, I let out a dramatic sigh.

“Don’t worry. Shuri is a genius in science. But, when it comes to matters of the heart, she is like a baby antelope trying to learn to walk.” She let’s out a small chuckle.

“It’s just… could I have picked a worse time to develop feeling for someone? She literally lost everything. And here I am pining for her.”

“We do not get a say in the matter. The heart wants what the heart wants. Even if the timing is inconvenient.”

“You’re saying this like you’re speaking from experience.”

The small smile she was sporting grew. “I am experienced in matters of the heart. Contrary to popular beliefs.”

“Really?! You’ve had a little crush? Oooo that’s cute.” I say teasingly.

“My experience is well past a crush.” She rolls her eyes at me. This side of Ayo is comforting. “I’ve been married for 6 years.”

“What?! Married? Holy shit. I’ve always seen you as some stoic badass that thrives when alone. Now you tell me that you have husband that puts up with you?!” Seriously, this is unbelievable.

She gives me an annoyed look. “My WIFE enjoys putting up with me. She says so herself.”

Oh… oooh…. “I’m sure she’s a lovely person.”

“You know she is. You’ve already met her.” My mind runs through all the women in Wakanda that I have met. She doesn’t make me think for too long. “It’s Aneka. The love of my life.”

This revelation makes soooo much sense now. Thinking back, the two of them have seemed close… They are so cute!!! “Damn. Y’all are an attractive couple.”

“This I already know.” I roll my eyes this time. “The reason I bring this up is because our situation is similar to yours. As the general, I have a lot of responsibilities. Aneka is a Dora warrior, and her duty to the throne comes first. On the outside, this relationship shouldn’t work. It seems like things are constantly trying to pull us apart. But, I find that having someone there to comfort me during the worst times is worth the trouble. Being able to share your burdens with someone makes it easier to keep moving on.”

“That was beautiful. I want what you guys have.” I reply honestly.

“Please, don’t think I am pressuring you into anything. I just think that it’s important to have another perspective before making a decision…. Or not making a decision.”

“Thank you.”

We continue our walk back to my room. The silence was not awkward anymore. Ayo really surprised me. I’m so thankful that even though my family is back in Chicago, I still have someone here willing to guide me and look out for me.

Once we make it to my room, she wishes me a good night and leaves. I prepare for bed because I plan on getting up early to make up for the time I missed in the lab today.

The next morning (and several hours into the work day)

“DAMNIT!!” Shuri throws her most recent attempt at the heart shaped herb at the wall. It makes a loud sound and causes me to jump. “I’m so sorry Riri. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“Nah it’s ok. You’re frustrated, I understand.”

“That’s no excuse to behave like that. Really, I’m sorry.” She apologized again.

“Princess Shuri, if I may a suggestion.” Ayo speaks up.

“Of course. Speak freely.” Shuri tells her.

“Perhaps it is time you take a break. You love walking around the city to clear your mind. I can send someone to escort you.” Ayo glances in my direction.

“That’s not a bad idea.” Shuri says.

“And maybe you should take Miss Williams with you.” My heart stops. “She hasn’t been able to see the city since she’s been here.”

“I would love to show you around.” Shuri says to me.

“Ok… yeah… that’s cool.”

“Great. Meet me at the gates in one hour. I need to shower and change my clothes.” I just realized she is wearing the same thing as yesterday.

“I’ll be there.”

“Great! Ayo, please make sure she gets there safe.”

“Will do princess.” Ayo nods to Shuri as she walks out of the lab.

Turning to Ayo I give her a look that means “I can’t believe you just did that.”

She simply replies, “The heart wants what it wants.” With a stupid smile.

An hour later at the gate

Shuri casually strolls up to me and the Dora warrior Ayo assigned to escort us. It’s none other than Aneka. By the time Shuri reaches us, she is laughing. She turns to Aneka and says, “Your wife is something else.”

“Whatever do you mean princess?” Aneka asks with a knowing smirk.

Shuri turns to me and grabs my hand. “Look Riri. As Ayo not so subtly insinuated, lately I’ve been feeling… uhh. Well, you see I’ve been thinking…” Shuri trails off.

Aneka let’s out a light chuckle and Shuri gives her a death glare, only making her laugh harder.

Taking a deep breath, Shuri continues. “I would like to get to know you on a… different level. Other than knowing you’re a super genius that can probably do anything you put your beautiful mind to. I know things are bad right now, but you are one of the only things that brings me comfort. And I want to be someone that can comfort you too.”

I intertwine our fingers and a smile spreads across my face. “The heart wants what the heart wants.” I tell her. Then we set off to explore the city. Ayo and Aneka really plotted this and set us up. I’ll have to thank them later.
