Transfer news LIVE: Man Utd 'to meet' Alvarez release clause plus Lukaku and Haaland latest
It’s the calm before the storm as Premier League clubs make their final plans ahead of the transfer window reopening on January 1.
On the eve of the new year, Romelu Lukaku dropped a Chelsea bombshell, admitting he was unhappy at Stamford Bridge.
The Belgian only returned to the Blues in the summer, but has made it clear he is discontent with his current situation under Thomas Tuchel.
Elsewhere, Manchester United could be set for an intriguing first window under new boss Ralf Rangnick with the Red Devils linked with incomings and potential departures.
Julian Alvarez is a name that has been touted as an option for Rangnick, with Anthony Martial looking increasingly unlikely to still be at Old Trafford for the rest of the season.
Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe has distanced himself from a January move and as ever, there will be updates regarding the futures of Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland and Europe’s other hottest properties.

Thomas Tuchel has admitted Chelsea are frustrated after Romelu Lukaku revealed his dissatisfaction with his Stamford Bridge situation.
The “surprised” Chelsea boss admitted he would sit down with Belgium striker Lukaku to thrash out a way forward but insisted he does not see any problem with the £98million club-record summer signing.
Lukaku told Sky Italy “I’m not happy with the situation” at Chelsea in an interview released on Thursday, but understood to have been conducted three weeks ago.

Lukaku comments anger Tuchel but striker has no plans to leave Chelsea
Romelu Lukaku has no intention of leaving Chelsea despite angering Thomas Tuchel with an interview in which the striker said that he was “not happy” with his situation at Stamford Bridge this season.
Lukaku, who became Chelsea’s record signing after joining from Internazionale for £97.5m last summer, stumbled into a controversy of his own making when comments about his dissatisfaction with his role under Tuchel were released by Sky Italia on Thursday.
The interview took place three weeks ago and was intended to help the Belgian build bridges with Inter fans. However Lukaku ended up risking his relationship with Tuchel after questioning the manager’s system and adding that he wants to return to San Siro while still at “a good enough level”

Manchester United vs. Burnley result: Ronaldo, McTominay lead Red Devils to win
A torrid opening 45 minutes led the way as Manchester United shut out the noise and emphatically stomped relegation-threatened Burnley 3-1 at Old Trafford. Ralf Rangnick made six changes from the disappointing 1-1 draw against Newcastle, and the squad responded.
Scott McTominay was the star of the show, advancing forward in a box-to-box role and providing a constant threat for United. The 25-year-old scored the opener and produced another two blistering efforts that were both only stymied by world-class Wayne Hennessey saves.
Jadon Sancho originally had a deserved second for United, although eventually it was deemed an own-goal off the foot of Ben Mee. Cristiano Ronaldo appeared for United’s third, with McTominay again providing the hard work while Ronaldo cleaned up the scraps.

WHO WAS MAN OF THE MATCH AGAINST BURNLEY?
Manchester United rounded off 2021 with a 3-1 victory over Burnley at Old Trafford - and this is your chance to vote for our Man of the Match.
United opened the scoring through Scott McTominay's early strike, with Cristiano Ronaldo claiming the assist, following good work by Mason Greenwood.
The lead was doubled when Jadon Sancho took up Luke Shaw's invitation to drive into the box and thought he had his maiden goal at Old Trafford, only for the Premier League to rule it as an own-goal by Ben Mee.
Ronaldo got in on the act by stabbing in the rebound after Wayne Hennessey tipped a McTominay drive onto the woodwork, although Aaron Lennon soon reduced the arrears.

Jadon Sancho extends Manchester United lead vs Burnley after silky run
In the 26th minute of our Premier League clash against Burnley tonight, Luke Shaw wrestled the ball off of the Clarets on the left flank before slipping the ball down to Jadon Sancho.
Sancho drove into the box, effortlessly skipping away from James Tarkowski before directing a shot at goal, which was turned over the line with the help of a slight deflection off of Ben Mee.
The strike went down as an own-goal, but hopefully this is a useful reminder to Sancho that he will be rewarded if he stays true to his style of taking on defenders and slaloming into the box.

Blackburn Rovers player ratings: John Buckley and Darragh Lenihan superb in sixth successive win
On paper, the prospect of facing a horrendously out-of-form Barnsley side perched second from bottom appears inviting.
Yet in the Championship, there's no such notion of a given result. Blackburn Rovers may have reigned victorious to chalk up their sixth consecutive league win but they were made to work extremely hard for it and that's exactly why this result was all the more satisfying.
Rovers should have been out of sight in the first-half, Joe Rothwell's effort the only goal they had to show for their attacking endeavours and Barnsley delivered a sucker punch just prior to the interval when Carlton Morris' shot deflected off the woodwork and over the line.
And yet this team displayed character, resilience and that little dose of magic to overcome Barnsley's charges and muster victory from a game that had plenty of nerve-tingling moments. That it was Ben Brereton Diaz who scored the winner - recording his 20th goal of the season (celebrate your winnings wisely, SkyBet customers) - was an apt way to conclude the year.

Chelsea vs Brighton: Player ratings, analysis and Reece James injury latest as Welbeck produces late equaliser
Danny Welbeck’s stoppage-time header earned Brighton a point at Stamford Bridge to leave Chelsea eight points behind Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
After Cesar Azpilicueta had already hit the post, Romelu Lukaku’s 28th-minute header gave the Blues the lead but they had to wait 45 minutes for another attempt on goal as Graham Potter’s Brighton grew into the game.
There were more injury concerns for manager Thomas Tuchel too as first Reece James and then Andreas Christensen were forced off to join fellow defenders Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva in the treatment room.

Chelsea vs Brighton: Three lessons learnt in another disappointing draw
It was another disappointing result for Chelsea with more injuries and poor performances all around. The Blues were never in control of the game against Brighton on Wednesday evening, even after the team took the lead in the first half. Furthermore, Thomas Tuchel was forced to make two substitutions due to injury, which only adds frustration and worries for upcoming games. The Seagulls’ late equalizer was the final nail in the coffin as the hosts all but dropped out of the title race for the season following an embarrassing December showing.
Here are three lessons we learnt in Chelsea’s disappointing draw versus Brighton:

Manchester City signed off 2021 with a slender but deserved victory over Brentford to move eight points clear at the top of the Premier League.
Phil Foden scored the only goal of the game as City capitalised on Chelsea’s draw at Brighton on the same evening and Liverpool’s defeat to Leicester the night before to extend our advantage at the summit heading into the new year.
On his return to the starting XI, Foden scored a classy volley from Kevin De Bruyne’s superb 16th minute cross to clinch Pep Guardiola’s side’s 10th consecutive win in the league.
The goal came within a minute of Brentford’s best period of the game.
Ederson had already been forced into a reflex save to prevent Ruben Dias diverting Yoane Wissa’s cross into his own net, when the Brazilian stretched out a toe to keep out a shot from the same player following a corner.
With Ivan Toney braced to turn in the rebound, Nathan Ake did just enough to put the striker off before Joao Cancelo headed the loose ball off the line and City swiftly turned defence into attack as De Bruyne’s curling cross from deep on the right was deftly steered home by Foden for his fifth league goal of the campaign.

Phil Foden: Man City can’t take foot off the gas after going eight points clear
Phil Foden has warned Manchester City’s title rivals they are going to keep their foot on the gas after pulling eight points clear at the top of the Premier League.
While Liverpool and Chelsea slipped up after Christmas, Foden’s goal made it 10 league wins on the spin for City as they edged past Brentford 1-0.
“It was an important win,” Foden told City’s website. “Brentford made it really difficult, they are a physical team, very dangerous off set pieces so we had to keep going until the final whistle and I’m proud of the team for doing that.
“Around Christmas time, you can’t take your foot off the gas, you have to keep going and remain focused which this team is doing at the moment and you can see we are getting lots of points.

Crystal Palace vs Norwich City review: Player ratings, analysis and 22 seconds that exposed gulf in class
While Norwich’s beleaguered back four struggled to find an outlet in the absence of Teemu Pukki, Palace’s fluid frontline showed the deadly combination of pace, power, poise and precise technique that has become their trademark under the self-isolating Patrick Vieira.
The breakthrough came early through Odsonne Edouard’s penalty, with Will Hughes’ neat turn in the box having drawn a clumsy foul from Kenny McLean.
The visitors’ best chance of levelling looked like coming from a set piece but that also proved to be their downfall. After Jacob Sorensen fluffed a shot at the back post it took Palace just 22 seconds to slice through Norwich’s poorly organised backline and double their lead. Tyrick Mitchell found Edouard with an excellent ball in behind and the Palace forward played in Jean Philippe Mateta whose finish into the corner was too precise for the outstretched Angus Gunn.
The lively Jeffrey Schlupp then found the same corner with an exquisite shot just four minutes later and the game was all but dead before half time.

PRO SOCCER TALK | NBC SPORTS Select TeamSubscribe: Southampton vs Tottenham, live! How to watch, stream link, TV, team news
Southampton vs Tottenham: Spurs will try to improve to seven games unbeaten under Antonio Conte when they visit St. Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday (Watch live at 10 am ET, on NBCSN and online via NBCSports.com).
SOUTHAMPTON vs TOTTENHAM STREAM LIVE
Conte has re-instilled in Tottenham not only the ability to competently defend, but also a confidence to consistently create scoring chances and score goals. It’s a far cry from the days of Jose Mourinho, or even Nuno Espirito Santo, when three and four Tottenham players surge forward and combine in attack. Lucas Moura bagged a goal and two assists in the Boxing Day drubbing of Crystal Palace, the surest sign that Conte has worked a minor miracle in his first 60 days at the club.
Boxing Day was equally brilliant for Southampton, who went into the London Stadium full of hope and came back out full of points after beating West Ham in a thrilling affair. It was the second straight game, and the third time in five games, that Saints scored multiple goals after hitting the mark just twice in their first 13 games this season. The victory also snapped a six-game winless skid (0W-3D-3L) dating back to the start of November.

Southampton vs Tottenham: Prediction, kick-off time, TV, live stream, team news, h2h results - preview today
Tottenham are building momentum under Antonio Conte and will be looking to build on an excellent win over Crystal Palace as they travel to Southampton this afternoon.
While the Conte era has been a somewhat stop-start one at Spurs for a number of reasons thus far, they are unbeaten under his watch in the competition and look good value to finish in the top four come the end of the campaign.
Now, we are starting to see Spurs in his mould.
Indeed, Harry Kane is back amongst the goals and Lucas Moura appears to have had a new lease of life under the Italian, making them a daunting foe for most Premier League teams at the moment.
Southampton, however, could well be buoyed by their dramatic Boxing Day win over West Ham United and can certainly cause problems when at their best.

Southampton vs Tottenham: Player ratings and analysis as Antonio Conte bemoans Spurs’ missed opportunity
Antonio Conte has yet to experience defeat in the Premier League since taking charge of Tottenham, but the overwhelming feeling for the Italian was one of disappointment after his side failed to overcome a Southampton side reduced to 10 men before half-time.
When Mohammed Salisu was dismissed after conceding the 39th minute penalty that allowed Harry Kane to cancel out James Ward-Prowse’s opening goal, the balance of the game inevitably shifted in Spurs’s favour, presenting Conte’s side with a chance to strengthen their challenge to break into the top four.
