Stop Gaslighting Yourself

Hey Tumblerz, I wanted to open up a classic topic today that I find myself thinking about a lot: good old Self-Blame. Especially the kind that shows up after someone crosses a line.

To start off, I hope you have a couple minutes to check out this short sketch, a truly hilarious comedian's take on the subject: If A Robbery Report Was Treated Like A Rape Report.

I found Cynthia Kao's take here brilliantly cutting and hilarious (admittedly a bit disturbing, too). I think it nails the kind of absurdity that can send us into what I sometimes think of as 'self-gaslight' mode. Which is really, really, really common.

This state of mind makes sense because we do live in a world, a quietly coercive system, often designed to make the "blame game" of justice go flip mode on us.

If you're like me, you might find yourself thinking things like:

“Did I give the wrong impression?” “Maybe I shouldn’t have smiled.” “Was that... actually harassment?” “Am I just making a big deal out of nothing?”

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And there’s a reason.

Blaming yourself can weirdly feel safer than facing how badly you were treated. The thinking goes: if it was your fault, then maybe you’re still in control after all - you can do better or fix it next time - and you aren't powerless to stop it from happening again.

That's comforting psychology. A mindset I've sunk into myself many times. But here’s the thing you have to remember: you simply were not the problem, you just weren't - you weren’t the one with the power in that situation.

Sadly, a lot of people who’ve been harassed don’t even recognize it as harassment at first. Work and pop culture train us to smooth things over, give the benefit of the doubt regardless of context, be chill, act “professional," on and on.

What I'm trying to say is, your reaction to self-gaslight makes sense. But that doesn’t mean you deserved what happened. And you don’t have to carry the guilt just because the system made it easier to blame yourself than to hold someone else accountable.

By the way, I have to say here that it’s okay if you’re still untangling how it made you feel. That’s not weakness, it’s actually your wisdom in progress.

Just know you’re not crazy or overreacting. You’re just living in a world that doesn’t always want to believe you. But some of us do. And we’re not going anywhere.

Y’all have been so enthusiastic about the new tees and crews I’ve been making inspired by Andor season 2, so I thought I’d drop them all here in one post with some thoughts on my process. 💜 Shop is here.

Starting out with my I have friends everywhere tee, which y'all have made a best seller. The Aurebesh has the above mentioned rebel codephrase alongside the Andor starbird, a U-Wing, and a starry sky.

I knew I had to make a Cassian tee with this line from the first time I heard it. The Aurebesh reads "You're coming home to yourself." It's such a pivotal moment right at the beginning of season 2.

And who are we as a fandom without kalkite memes? I made an English and an Aurebesh version of this tee, which reads "kalkite · synthetic kalkite · kalkite alternatives · kalkite substitutes." I used crystals because based on the project the kalkite is being harvested for, and Galen and Lyra Erso's body of work, they would be looking for crystals. (I'm not a geologist, but I've read all the Rogue One books.) Also there's a tiny Imperial cog there at the bottom.

There's pretty much no Kleya merch so I wanted to make a tee that reflected not just her but her relationship with Luthen and the Rebellion. The Aurebesh reads "know your way out," advice Luthen often repeated to her. I'm hoping to make some more Kleya things in the future, but I love how this tee came out.

After the second Ghorman arc, I wanted to make something to represent the people that could perhaps be a tourist tee. On the top the Aurebesh reads "call your kin to come and sing," from the Ghorman planetary anthem. On the bottom it says "Ghorman · Sern Sector."

I wanted to make a Melshi tee that connected the Narkina 5 arc to the final arc of Andor, so I used an image of him from the end of the 3rd arc as he makes his way to Yavin. I used colors that reminded me of Yavin and the quote "people have to know about this," which Melshi says to Cassian when they part ways on Niamos. He's a messenger, like Cassian, with all the risks that entails.

Edited to add in the Mon Mothma tee I just dropped. The Aurebesh reads “the death of truth is the ultimate victory of evil” which was a lot of text to get on there so I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to make this work. But I think it came out pretty great. I also really wanted to use an image from her getaway car moment, her ultimate commitment to the rebellion as she leaves the Senate.

And these last two tees are pretty self explanatory. And in English. I hope you love them.

Experienced this with a group of high schooler volunteers setting up and taking down a booth for a 6th graders event. The pure giddiness and excitement and exhaustion on the 14-16 year old faces after the day full of wide eyed and excited 11 and 12 year olds coming by our table was sooo fun

"backstage at a live event" is perhaps my favourite human collective emotion ive ever experienced. From running through the creepy empty school hallways before a theatre show, to the staff only breakroom at a convention or event where youre running a stall, to the bridal suite getting ready before your bestie walks down the isle.

Theres a little wall between the guys who are 'in on it' with you, whatever it is, and your audience or customers or guests or just all those people who are *not* in on it. Youve got a wallkie talkie, or a backstage pass, or an exhibitor badge, and youve never felt more alive
