So racists have a history of taking words that have honest meanings and turning them against those who use them.

Here is my odd point; one word that racists have never been able to co-opt into supporting them is the word "racist". Judging by the quotes about complexion, racists would always be offended by the word even in the 1850s, and have never not been offended by it. It's the one word they've never been able to change.
