For starter, I gave this game about 4/10
I hate Metaphor: ReFantazio. I hate 90% of its content. Sure, the characters you bond with have 'unique' looks, but then every NPC around them is just walking beige (literally lololol), don't give me that jib about how 'oh that's how it's supposed to be cuz NPC' Oh please, other JRPG games had way more respect for npc designs than this.
The characters are so shallow it's honestly insulting. It’s not even like there wasn’t time to develop them, there was, and there's attempts of it, yet somehow, they’re still blander than a cup of nothing. People all around the fandom complained about Persona's characters development being locked in the social links but they praised this game for doing the exact same thing but this one is tolerable I guess because it's much worse.
Junah and her sister’s conflict ends almost as soon as it starts, there’s barely any emotional tension or exploration of how Junah actually feels. Basilio gets depressed after Fidelio’s death for a while, then just… moves on. These so-called social links reveal nothing surprising or meaningful about the characters. Ironically, the ones that aren't in your main combat party have the better stories, stronger development, richer world-building, and better insight into the system.
Tumblr media
I’d rather have Alonzo and Brigitta in the team than Basilio and Hulkenberg.
There are so many plot holes that just flew over people’s heads.
Like : how the hell did Fidelio even know about the Lance's ability? When did he see it? The game never shows it, never even hints at it, but then suddenly he’s talking about it in a cutscene??
Did the devs just DM him that??
Zorba should’ve had a way stronger role in the story than just being Louis henchman.
He had the perfect setup to show how oppression can twist someone into becoming a monster, and his connection to Hulkenberg could’ve made that story actually hit, but nope.
Throughout the game, it's honestly quite impressive how one note Hulkenberg is in every expression, Shtrol actually showed heavier grief of expression for Grius (very dumb assassination attempt and very deserving death) than Hulkenberg did.
Meanwhile, the devs clearly thought they were being very clever by pouring all of Hulkenberg’s emotion and arc into a random NPC we barely know, riveting, absolutely riveting, oh and she loves gross food all year around, riveting.
Her whole everything is flatter than her ass.
The Prince is so bland, oh, folks were out here praising him for just having a voice and some responses, the bare minimum, but somehow, he's blander than any silent protagonist in existence.
EVEN his imagination is bland, cmon, somehow his imagination of himself is a blander version of himself, how the fuck does that even happened??
Oh yeah, folks also praised this game for having no romance option
Thank god cause none of the characters are even that interesting to even be friends with, let alone date.
Most of them just flock to you like actual opportunists once they get new superpowers. You know, royal moochers riding his coattails shit, and charmingly, they're even called Followers, even little Maria bro 😭😂😂🤣.
The characters placement for cutscenes of this game is so awful, Zorba is literally this dark purple dude with one horn standing out in the bright green forest, laughing to himself, and nobody notices despite the party standing like 10 feet away, he's not being concealed by the trees either.
Tumblr media
None of the Elda take any real alert at the one creepy purple cape guy wandering around, muttering to himself, even though this place is supposed to be secretive.
Apparently, the fact that the Prince was killed earlier doesn’t seem to matter to anyone? Like, you’d think that would raise alarms or danger levels, but nope, nobody cares.
The lamest ability has got to be that skateboarding sword. You can’t even pass some stairs because of invisible walls, no no, you have to walk around the whole area just to get across. You can’t cross the sea, or even slide upwards toward a building. What’s the point? To move faster? We already got instant travel???!
They should’ve had missions to unlock secret areas in the sky or hidden spots in the sea using this thing.
But nope, it’s only used once in that manner and it's very linear, and somehow, a lot of people think that’s impressive, apparently the devs think I will be impressed by this.
The game spends time on this monologue about imagination and becoming your own idealized self, which makes it all the more baffling that the Prince’s imagination for the usage of his powers is so painfully uninspired, like what's the point in all of this??
Combat is OK but once I got things figured out, it just felt very weary to me, not looking forward to much. Most of the costumes are lacklustre, maybe it's just personal taste thing but I really wasn't keened on most of it much, and you can't change Gallica's costume so it just felt extra pointless.
The 3d art is ugly as hell and doesn't match the illustrations at all. The character movements often felt straight out of the PS2 era, super stiff and awkward. Honestly, some actual PS2 games had more natural animation than this, I didn’t just feel scammed, I felt triple scammed.
The overly cluttered menu screen and UI can be cool at times, but mostly it just feels like it’s overcompensating, like the devs know how empty the game really is.
Some of the music is okay, like, maybe two tracks stand out, but the rest is totally forgettable. It even has one of the lamest "songstress" song I’ve ever heard. I'm convinced the devs thought that by lowering the intensity of the boss battle music yet raising the loudness of the regular battles would make everything felt deep or unique… but it just made everything feel, well...flat.
Louis’s twist reveal is hands down the dumbest crap I’ve ever seen, and honestly, it’s perfect because everyone else in the game is just as dumb too.
Some scenes in this game really feel like the devs have never studied film composition in their life, which I doubt, because Japanese devs are usually huge nerds about that stuff. Moments that could’ve had real dramatic flair or visual impact end up feeling awkward, flat, or just underwhelming.
The 2D cutscenes are another issue. Characters in P3R may move stiffly, but at least they look great in stills. Metaphor’s 2D scenes? They look okay in screenshots, but once they start moving, it feels like the animation was an afterthought, quite stiff, awkward, and just lacking polish.
One thing I really liked about this game is the enemies design, it was meticulously designed, fun, stupid, kinda scary at times too. There is good challenges here and there too which keeps it fun for me, attempts of filling the map also kept it quite tense.
Plot could be better, they got some good ideas but not enough satisfying execution.
The saddest part is, I don’t even want to hate this game. I wanted it to be good. I spent real money on it, heck, I saved up just to support it.
And yet… here we are, lord!

It means 'Color Me Red' (Taken from the movie Bajirao Mastani)
In the movie, Mastani dances for her future-to-be husband Bajirao, with her palm painted in red, it signifies a point of humility and devotion, dedicating herself to him due to the song referencing the God Krishna and she's a Muslim, symbolising the color Red as being binded together in a divine love, In short, Mastani is imploring the king (Bajirao) to marry her.
Basically, that gave me an idea, I thought, "Hey....wouldn't it be so cute to draw Megat and Reza in Mehndi??" 😂😂😂 (Aka Inai) Nyehehehehe
If you are a bit confused about the perspective, Megat's shirt is just oversized and their hands and legs are closer to the camera so it looked bigger than it actually is.
I know it's not the best but these things really sparks my ideas. I hope I'll keep improving myself more and more with time in these. Also also, this is meant to be Reza and Megat in their adult years, which is why Megat has slightly longer hair.

Honestly, I'm a tiny bit flattered you think that way, I'm not made of intelligence after all neither do I see myself that way huehuehue.
Yeah, I think for it to have a rebuttal scenes that has some depths is they must first have some animosity towards Mr Sins, in which they don't, they view him as a mere distant and indifferent warden of the school, in many ways he doesn't truly exist for them except the fear of being exposed.
Him and Puan Faniza is absent from the movie narrative as well, more like a background threat (if you will) than an actual character. They already memorised his alert patterns by then (but Kahar got sloppy) and that's just a year before the series takes place.
That totally makes sense, and I get where you're coming from, kids usually don’t go head-to-head with their authority figures, especially in formal and institutional like settings, they're too tired in many ways, I never went through what SBP students did, their environment and perspective are so different than anything I've ever experienced as sekolah Islam swasta students tbh (I do have some rememberance of my classmates basically going for weeks to discuss something about the schedule and all that with the teachers, one of them is such an intense talker you swear they were arguing but they were just passionate really while not trying to explode 😂), so I can imagine, if I went through similar things, I would recluse myself from the student body more and more, I get the survival of the fittest part and being desensitised to things, but I think we lacked the many perspectives of the older or even younger students in the matter in the plot, they start showing some of it during after camp bulan madu, but even then only Naim was impacted by a different perspectives on the subject because Kahar likes his obedience.
Imagine older students egging on the juniors to fight hard in the upcoming election once they're old enough, or telling them to hang in there because they’ve been through worse, like a mix of encouragement and tough love that influences how the younger students perceives how to approach the challenges that comes to their way, I'm super sorry if I am being super redundant on the matter.
So while I get why the scenes were written that way, I still wonder what it would’ve looked like if the show let the cracks show a bit more yk yk.
Jeremy Bentham theory is much more relevant to the plot of the series but I meant more in the way Foucault developed it, his version wasn’t about love or efficiency for the good of society, but about how power operates when people know they’re being watched. It becomes colder, more psychological control through constant internal pressure.
That's why I circle it back to the experiments, the Panopticon effect feels weirdly connected to the Universe 25 experiment in my head. I'm convinced the mice knew on some level that they are being watched, and that awareness is basically what fractured and make them all kinds of crazy, it wasn't really overcrowding but psychological pressure of living in an artificial system which was designed and monitored by a higher power that they can't understand nor escape their clutches. In that way, their breakdown illustrate what the Panopticon effect predicts: that surveillance and control, when under the illusion of safety or comfort, can lead to anxiety, withdrawal, and ultimately a weird kind of madness, meaning the students behaviour really.
And honestly, it raises some questions about what the Universe 25 misunderstood, not just about the mice, but about what living things need to actually stay whole and keeping their autonomy intact, in this case, it can circle back to the tutors and the whole system.
Observing without connection and surveillance without much understanding on the whole is quite dehumanising, that's why I think these scenes can be made more effectively if the Kudrat boys formed their own conclusions on the matter, maybe even bringing up Mr Sins attitude, rather than just Puan Faniza you know, it's weak (maybe, I'm so indecisive on my own thoughts sorry) but why not?? 😂
On the last 4 points that you breakdown, I agree on the things you listed, in fact I think my points might be a lot more simpler if I break it down even more lol, and yea, despite the many weaknesses the series showed, they did many things right objectively and subjectively for me, and that's why it's a great show owo.
Srsly, they should, or maybe they're just afraid the whole thing would be too inconsistent if they dive in to it too deeply, they never really explain how Kahar got into Muay Thai and we're left to assume a lot just to make the whole timeline feels satisfying.
Not as long as yours but I sincerely hope it's OK, I'm not good at breaking down stuff, I always chose the shorter route even in projects back then hahahaha.
As always love your thesis on this bro. ♥️♥️♥️❤️❤️❤️
Tumblr media
This is just something that popped out in my mind while watching the series back then but it's not something I can put into words until today, but I do wish that the Kudrat boys would counter Mr Sins argument more or show them having arguments/debate in class in terms of ideology, psychology and the nature of a cruel experiment like universe 25, not too harshly, I get it, keeping up the image and such but wouldn't that have been such an interesting thing to see? Maybe for some that's a bit of a reach to ask for students to do against the teachers, but believe me, I remembered when we are also curious of those in HS days, not just in pop culture but also a deeper understanding of humanity, I can never insert myself into those conversations back then but I love hearing my classmates discuss them.
Also, I'm just saying, if you're gonna insert Universe 25 experiment and the controversial conclusion of the experiment, you can at least talk around it, like talk about how Calhoun doesn't understand the nature of rats and their well being, and the boys experience this thing called Panopticon effect etc etc
The scene where Puan Faniza is trying to crack Prakash for an answer to understand him better is something I wish we had more in the series too.
Idk, maybe I'm asking too much, but hey, since when have I ever asked for less of PHC content haha, sorry, a lot of yapping this week instead of art cause I kept going back and forth from books to sketches.
To cut things short, the reason I wanted more of this is because they’re smart students, right? So why not integrate that into the story more meaningfully?
I sincerely hope they do that in Kudrat 1968 bro. I have faith in the director.
If you disagree, do let me know, I'm still learning how to explain my thoughts across in a more understandable manner hah.

This is probably one of those things that has been on my mind for awhile and that is Abu Yamin perspectives on Megat. They were never on screen together so it doubles the challenge when you're trying to analyse their relationship for a fic, it's not like you gotta be 100% accurate, not saying that even by the margin of my mind, just do what you want really, it's a free world. I just want to be accurate with it.
I went on the easy route for my first Fic but now there's something that gnaws at my brain of that fact that, wouldn't he liked Megat with the way the guy carried himself? Like, you liked the person, he gives you a bit of push, but also the kind of person that made you feel like you gotta brace for an impact if you're easily threatened?
I’m still turning it over in my head.

Sometimes, you just find your forgotten sketch book in the worst possible state, all due to the negligence of my own property. I edited some spots on the paper, this is very much unfortunate 😕 but there's not much I could possibly do.
Oh well
This is Bawang Merah BTW.

Tell me I'm not crazy for noticing one aspect of Megat is he doesn't curse unless he's super pissed? 😂
Yeah I get it, it's a movie, it's short and we as a fandom know there's so much they could develop (by just expanding the time to 30 more minutes *cough*) but for me, that's an interesting nuance in his character if I'm somewhat correct, like there's another layer to his upbringing kinda thing 😂
My delulu tendencies is reaching its maximum level by the overthinking I'm doing on this Fic rn.

Don't like coffee but nice poem ☕💯💯
I shall now wax poetry of my coffee
Dear coffee,
Such a glorious sight for my eyes to see
From your roasty dark plight,
To your divine consistency.
Resigned as beans or legumes in the slop,
You are the cream of the crop.
A healthy diet I try cultivate,
But with one drop, you contaminate
