Interview with Deer Eyes video maker Alice Topsøe
We had been stalking Alice’s instagram for quite a while before asking her if she wanted to make the video for Deer Eyes. On her IG you’re met with a distinct style of 3d animation, with bodies and faces, some in movements as videos and VJ installations and some static pieces of art. Usually naked statements of body image in a genderfluid space.
The stiffness and distancing from the human and organic that you find in her computerized animations are the mere image of this disconnection from our bodies that can happen in a world extremely concerned with the exterior, gender and who/what we chose to give status in society.
That is why we found her ideas perfect for making the video for Deer Eyes.
Alice is 21 and born in Copenhagen. Pictures below are from her facebookpage.
Lowly: Can you talk about how you got started?
Alice: I’ve always been doing what I do now, but I’ve only just found the right medium for it. I think most of the video I do is driven by a frustration with norms, rules and hierarchy in society. I feel a need to interpret the chaos both inside and outside of me, and it’s not an possibility for me not to.
L: How would you describe your creative process?
A: Chaotic, stressful and sleepless. lots of benzodiazepines.
L: Who and what inspires you?
A: The idea of the perfect woman, commercials, capitalism, and right now, all of Mykki Blancos music and videoes.
L: How did you interpret the song?
For me, Deer Eyes is a song about feeling disgusting, useless and lonely. When everything that you feel is wrong, and you try to erase yourself to become somebody anonymous without these disturbing feelings. It could be when you are rejected, like in the song, but it could also be on a sunny Tuesday afternoon, where you feel like hanging out with someone, but you are not sure if your friends like you, so you don’t call them.
L: What is it about the body and the gender discussion that you find interesting and important?
A: The way I see it it’s like the world is created for straight men, and women and minorities shouldn’t take up so much space in media and culture, in the streets, the bars and the conversations. I want to bring these bodies, that are usually hidden away or oversexualized, into the mainstream media.
L:Do you think it has changed in the recent years with for example trans people becoming more accepted/or more visual ?
A: My work is mostly about body acceptance as a movement, I therefore include trans people because it wouldn’t really be body acceptance if you excluded anyone. Also, I aim to create a space where no one who is sexualized traditionally, is sexualized.
I don’t identify as trans, so it’s hard for me to say anything about the acceptance.
It worries me a lot though, that like women's bodies, trans bodies are being oversexualized on a large scale; the way trans people are presented, is still largely by cis people and for cis people.
That creates a certain narrative, that is still not optimal.
But yes, we have a better representation in Hollywood, now we just need trans people in directors chairs and senators offices.

Through my work, I try to present a variation of bodies, that all look different and maybe even weird to some people. I try to present them in a way, that challenges the viewer, but in also in a neutral way, so the viewer can observe if they feel threatened or odd when looking at fat women with confidence, or a person with a penis and breasts, just standing there, in a neutral position in front of them.
The videos are supposed to push some boundaries, and not be for your pleasure, but more for your education.
L: What are you working on now?
A: An installation with a project called Kosmoklang, another group called Cph Deep, and I am making a video with queer musician Fune. The concept is like a catwalk, but we are not showing off clothes, just different bodies. I am really excited about it.
Lowly: Thank you Alice, for understanding our music and making such an awesome video for it:
