all the trans bathroom bans have this awful tendency to push the overton window of even trans advocacy by trans people to the right
so many trans people now are focused on pleading to let trans women use women's restrooms and to let trans men use men's restrooms that I feel like the demand that was much more prominent even 5 years ago to construct non-segregated accessible bathrooms for everyone is almost nonexistent

I didn’t know this on my first read, but all the fuckery with Jonathan’s letters is SUCH a classic gothic lit element, seen primarily with women. A great example is The Woman in White, where the female characters have to go to wild lengths to make sure the mail they send is actually making it out of the house. Even when they know it’s being tampered with or stolen, they have to mask this knowledge, because they live in the power of the ones doing it and would only endanger themselves if they brought it up. Being in a position where the only power you have is putting words to paper, and even that is being stolen from you.
Anyway this has been post #462 of how much I love our gothic Heroine Jonathan Harker

PAPRIKA CHICKEN (Paprikahendl)
1 young fowl, about 4 pounds
2 tablespoons fat
2 large onions, chopped
2 tablespoons Hungarian sweet paprika ( I used hot Hungarian paprika because Johnathan says it’s spicy)
½ cup tomato juice
2 tablespoons flour
½ cup sour cream
Cut chicken into serving pieces, and salt. Q
Lightly brown onions in fat. Blend in half the paprika.
Add tomato juice and chicken.
Simmer, covered, 1 hour or until tender. Remove chicken.
Add remaining paprika to sauce, then add the flour beaten into sour cream.
Simmer, stirring, 5 minutes or until well
blended.
Put sauce through sieve, food mill or blender.
Heat chicken and puréed sauce together over low flame.
Arrange chicken on warm platter.
Pour half the sauce over; pass the rest separately in a sauceboat.
Serve with Flour Dumplings.
6 servings

Now I'm not saying that JD Vance killed the Pope, per se. I just think his actions raise some questions, like for example: Did JD Vance kill the Pope?

been genuinely bewildered by the reaction to Snape’s casting
‘Everyone making fun of his nose and hair. Getting passed up every year for the DADA job for incompetent morons. James Potter committing hate crimes by assaulting and exposing him. Lily abandoning her friend and marrying the bully. Dumbledore demanding his soul. Harry thinking he’s up to no good with no evidence. This all looks so bad!’
Like…did any of this look GOOD before he was cast as a non-white character?!?? How has it taken this to make everyone think twice? They’re sooooo close to getting it.
And somehow they’ve all missed that Snape being automatically dismissed, distrusted, and despised by all these characters on the side of good is because JKR already used the descriptions of his appearance and the reactions to that appearance to code him as a villain. Harry and Albus and Petunia and James all look at him with his black eyes and hooked nose and sallow skin and weird interests and refusal to defer to his social betters and think ‘dodgy’. Even Lily comes across as waiting for him to behave as expected. Because society primes them to do so! The unfounded prejudice has always been a part of his story.
Absolutely, this is exactly the point. All those nasty slights and outright cruelties directed at Snape were always grotesque, but because he was coded as “white” (and thus it felt “normal” to lampoon his hooked nose, greasy hair, and sallow skin), nobody batted an eye. Now that the casting brings race to the forefront, suddenly folks gasp and clutch their pearls. It’s staggering how they’ve conflated “Oh, that’s just Snape being Snape” with “No, that’s straight-up bigotry.”
The real kicker is the double standard: decades of dismissing Snape as the weirdo with terrible hygiene and social skills—and rewarding the bullies who beat him up or ostracised him (“just schoolyard banter,” we told ourselves)—yet the moment a non-white actor steps into his shoes, the same behaviour is rebranded as intolerable prejudice. That hypocrisy reveals far more about those critics than about the character or the casting choice. They’re comfortable with systemic bias… until it hits too close to home. The irony is brutal: the narrative was always steeped in unfounded, appearance-based hatred, and only when we’re forced to see it through a racial lens do we finally recognize how ugly it’s always been.

Sometimes I think this fandom forgets that the Marauders and Snape are boomers. I just saw an "rip Lily Evans you would have loved Dolly Parton" post and like... Dolly Parton began her career in the 60s. Lily most definitely would have listened to "Jolene" as a 13 year old kid. And as a fanfic writer myself, I don't want to unnecessarily dunk on anyone's hard work, but it is a pet peeve of mine when I search for fics set in the Marauders era during the 1970s and the characters all sound like they are heavily involved in 2024 tumblr discourse. These kids would have never heard the term "genderfluid." They would call themselves transsexual or a butch dyke and there would be 212% more cigarette smoke, just everywhere. Fuck there was a designated smoking area at my boomer parents' high school for students and so long as the parents signed the permission slip the kids could go there and smoke. This was incredibly common (at least in American high schools) pre-1980s. Like, I can see the Evans family playing a game of lawn darts, Mr Evans with a beer in one hand, a cigarette in his mouth, throwing highly dangerous lawn darts that would eventually be recalled because of all the deaths it caused. Severus Snape had most certainly absorbed lead from the leaded paint in his house. Nobody was going to call the cops on any abuse they might see going on in the Snape's house because its the 1960/1970s and "how Mr. Snape disciplines his son is his business." War rationing had just ended 6 years before Snape, Lily, and the Marauders were born. Mental illness was extremely taboo, dyslexia wasn't really recognized in schools or talked about until the 1980s, after the Marauders had graduated, a lot of people were still calling PTSD "shell shock." For Muggles, there was no real DNA testing (it was in its infancy), no cellphones you had to pray there was a payphone nearby, and you wpuld talk to a telephone operator. It wasn't until 1966 that the UK switched to an all-digit telephone numbers. Before then instead of an area code it was a central office in every city/region that used letters. So if Lily, as a six year old girl, wanted to talk to her grandma in Manchester, her mother would have dialed something like MAN-9126 (I actually have no idea what Manchester's central office code was lol, this is just an example). Cokeworth is likely a Victorian mill town, and the major push to replace outdoor plumbing with indoor plumbing didn't start until the 1960s. Severus would have most likely spent his early years without indoor plumbing while living in a rowhouse built in the 1860s. Tubs would have had to be filled by hand, laundry scrubbed by hand and hung out to dry, he would have used an outdoor toilet and considering he is in a poor urban area he most likely would have shared this toilet with his neighbors in the other rowhouses.
These characters' story are shaped by the time they lived in, and sometimes I think the fandom doesn't realize how different the 1960s and 1970s really was.

do i care at all about this dumb hbo reboot? nope.
do i find it incredibly telling that people who have hated Severus with a passion for years are beyond mad that they cast a black actor to play him because "he cannot be black, he is a Wizard nazi and it's thus relevant for him to be white!!!"?
the race allegory with regard to blood status has been always flimsy at its best (most "fantastic racism" allegories in fantasy and sci-fi are, imho, but that's neither here nor there) and the axis of oppression does not primarily focus on race and ethnicity (it doesn't ignore them either, see Pansy racially insulting Angelina, but that would deserve a much much longer post). considering all that, it makes perfect sense why a non-white pureblood would support the Death Eaters.
But if we take the race allegory and run with it, so anyone with non-magical ancestry is Actually a person of colour - yeah, of course Snape is of mixed race. Duh. Of course he is! In the "rules" of this world, it's the logical conclusion for Severus Snape to be biracial - as it is for Harry from the side of his mother. Yes, even if his maternal aunt, a woman of colour, is utterly heinous towards him. The Dursleys are thus also people of colour - even if they are a parody of a certain type of white Brits (see... this is where the allegory already starts to break).
Maybe instead of performative outrage over a casting, people could just be honest and say they wanted him to be white so they could continue to hate him, free of guilt and with a sense of justice.

I like to think that even though people don’t know that Matt is Daredevil, there’s still a general consensus among anyone who knows him, (and a fair few people who just recognise him from when he put Fisk in prison those two times and from Frank’s trial,) that he HATES Fisk. New York found out Fisk was Mayor and the first thought was; “Damn, if Daredevil was still around, he’d probably go insane.” And then it’s “Shit, someone should go remind that lawyer that murder is illegal.”
