Canadian Surfers of All Ages and Abilities Rallied Together This Past Weekend for a Beach Cleanup, Surf Lessons and Surf Contest Wednesday June 26, 2013 - On Sunday, June 23rd, the ROXY Salt Shaker event rallied surfers, beach goers and curious onlookers to celebrate International Surfing Day, and all things salt water, on Canada's west and east coasts. ROXY, in partnership with East Coast Surf School, Surfing Association of Nova Scotia, Tofino Paddle Surf and Surfrider Foundation Pacific Rim gathered together to host a beach cleanup and free surf lessons and surf contest simultaneously at Cox Bay, Tofino, BC and Lawrencetown Beach, Lawrencetown, NS. The bi-coastal event tied together the two epicenters of Canadian surf culture and joined a global roster of events intended to celebrate the sport of surfing and the sustainability of ocean resources. The East Coast kicked off events with a beach cleanup at Lawrencetown Beach, 30 minutes from downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Beach Clean-Up was followed by Surf Lessons by East Coast Surf School and a Surf Contest that awarded Best Style, Best Wave, Best Effort and Best Bail. “This event really brought the ladies together to have fun, adventure and to pay respect to the beach & ocean that give us both." said event volunteer Nikki Richards of East Agencies, a surf apparel distributor. Four hours later the West Coast activities commenced with the same sequence of events. After the Beach Cleanup, Tofino Paddle Surf and local legend Catherine Bruhwiler led a surf lesson in conditions that were perfect for catching your first wave or progressing to more intermediate moves. The day ended on the West Coast with a casual surf contest that attracted a large 'under 12' contingent. 14 in total! Most of these 'water women of the future' spent over four hours playing in the ocean and some went on to enter the open women's categories – and win! "It was an empowering event for all of us! Fun to help inspire those learning to surf and amazing to watch my 5-year-old surf with courage and delight for the first time! Thank you!" said surf instructor and competitor Shandy Kariatsumari who works at local surf shop Live to Surf. Looks like Tofino's next generation is starting to make their mark. Inspiring! For more information on the ROXY Salt Shaker partners please contact TofinoPaddleSurf.com and SurfingVancouverIsland.com/Surfrider on the west, ECSurfSchool.com and Surfns.com on the east and Roxy.com nationwide. COMING UP! Start with Superfood: Standup Paddle Board Cruise Start with Superfood: Standup Paddle Board Cruise, exploring our bays and seaweed patches. Tofino Paddle Surf and Urban Gardens take you on a tour explaining the basics of paddle boarding, the value of our seaweed and beach based composting. Enjoy a fun and easy way to be on the water while learning tips for good compost and gardens on our coast using our most abundant superfood, seaweed. Why is Seaweed Healthy? Growing in the ocean, seaweed picks up a range of minerals and other nutrients. It is a fairly simple food, making it easy for the body to break down and release the healthful substances inside, providing a variety of vitamins and minerals. Since seaweed grows in the ocean, it contains certain vitamins and minerals that aren't as available in land-grown vegetables or in our soils.

Tofino Paddle Surf & Coastal Bliss celebrate Earth Month! Join us Friday, April 19th at 9AM for this FREE EVENT promoting appreciation and celebration of the earth, inspiring respect and for care for our beaches, our oceans, our planet. Rain or Shine 45 minutes of a beach and SUP yoga practice at Mckenzie Beach! Read more about Earth Day and things you can do right now... Earth Day is April 22nd every year, all around the world since 1970. Earth Day has grown so much that celebrations take place throughout the whole month of April, also known as Earth Month. More than 6 million Canadians join 500 million people in over 180 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues. Nearly every school child in Canada takes part in an Earth Day activity. Here are just 10 of the things you can do right now to help save the environment. 1. Park it! Leave your car at home for a day and try walking or biking. Drive to work? Can you take Tofino bus? Carpool to council meetings and community events. Exercise all the way to the gym. 2. Shut Down! Turn off lights, computers and tv when not in use. Using highly efficient appliances can reduce the electricity consumption of an average household to one tenth of the national average. 3. Where's the beef? Try eating meat-free at least one day a week. A meat-based diet requires seven times more land than a plant-based diet. Livestock production is responsible for more climate change gasses than all the motor vehicles in the world. 4. Eat it! Choose foods produced organically, locally and in season as much as possible. Support your regional farmers: buying locally and in season is better for the environment than buying foods which have been shipped hundreds of kilometres. 5. Let it rot! Composting organics has two benefits: it reduces the amount of waste going to landfills and when added to your garden, helps nourish soil and plants. Make sure it's bear-friendly. If in doubt, do indoor composting with or without worms. 6. Don't be idle! If every driver of a light duty vehicle avoided idling by five minutes a day, collectively, we would save 1.8 million litres of fuel per day, almost 4500 tonnes of emissions, and $1.7 million in fuel costs each day. 7. Keep cool! Set your thermostat above room temperature in the summer and below room temperature in the winter. For each degree you can save five per cent on your utility bill and one per cent on your energy use. 8. Bright ideas... Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs or leds. A compact fluorescent uses only 25 % as much energy as an incandescent bulb and lasts 10 times longer. leds are even better! 9. Blue box it! The simple act of recycling has more impact on the environment that the average Canadian thinks. The amount of wood and paper North Americans throw away each year is enough to heat five million homes for 200 years. 10. Tell someone! Tell someone what you're doing to make the world a better place, and how fun and easy it is. Encourage them to get involved too! by Warren Rudd

THE WEDNESDAY VOICE: VANCOUVER ISLAND’S CATHERINE BRUHWILER By: Joe Carberry The Bruhwiler family helped put the small Vancouver Island town of Tofino on the international surf map. Growing up on the exposed west coast in this rugged timber and fishing community, the Bruhwilers took advantage of the fact that, “there’s always waves.” After years with endless sessions to themselves, the family of pro surfers, which includes brothers Sepp and Raph, has seen the town explode as Canada’s premiere surf destination. Now Catherine is at the standup forefront, not only introducing SUP paddling to the surf lineups the right way, but also tapping the sport’s limitless touring potential in the island-pocked region through her Tofino Paddle Surf outfit. SUP magazine senior editor Dave Shively recently caught up with Catherine after experiencing typical Tofino February surf conditions with her: sideways rain, 35-knot offshore winds, and overhead waves.
