âWe should go cloud-gazing.â Sheâd been thinking about it for a few days now and had finally found someone to ask. There was something calming about the thought of lying down in the park with someone and just watching the clouds for a while. âWhat do you think? If you say yes, I might just love you forever.â
âi think if you asked me for the moon iâd run up there and get it.â she drummed her palms on the steering wheel of her truck to the tune of pink floydâs summer â68. âsure tess, letâs go cloudgazing. you wanna go to the farm?â

{ OPEN STARTER }
âGABRIEL WAS DOING his usual Sunday evening routine, milling about the church as he sorted out his excess duties. He always stayed late on Sundays, if only to avoid going home a littlelonger. He certainly loved his family, and heâd never admit it, but sometimes he just needed time away. Gabriel hadnât been expecting anyone to come in. Hardly anyone besides the regular church crowd even approached the building, even less so as the day went on. So, when Gabriel heard the tell-tale creak of the wooden doors, he got up from his office and ventured into the nave. âhello?â He called, poking an inquisitive head into the room. There, he lay eyes on a person. Not just the wind, again. âOh, hi there! Do you need anything?â
the weight of walking into a church was oppressive. the heavy toll of a bell seemed a poe-esque pendulum and she was in the pit. the last time sheâd seen the dark face of a pastor had been at her momâs funeral. âhuh?â she startled, âiâm just passing by.âÂ

âno the point is, we did a sexy fireman calendar to raise money for this charity and each one of us has to sell so many copies.â felix huffed softly as he looked back at the other. he hadnât had an issue with stripping off and wearing a pumpkin and an irish leaf for the calendar but no one had told him that he would have to sell them too. âso do you wanna help the kids out or not?âÂ
dinah gulped noisily averting her eyes upwards. children, she thought, she loved helping children. but did it really have to be in the form of scantily clad firefighters? she still remembered the hospitalâs own escapade of sexy calendars (sheâd been asked to feature for february but had respectfully declined). âsure,â she said eyes still trained upwards. âhow much?â

{ OPEN STARTER }.
THE âNO SMOKINGâ sign was clearly visible behind Deanâs slouching frame. Which was exactly what had prompted him to light up a cigarette, more out of rebellion than a reminder. He slouched against the wall of a clearly PUBLIC building, taking long drags off the nicotine stick. Dean let his headphones rest on his shoulders, blasting Twenty Flight Rock at an ungodly volume. Unsurprisingly, someone approached him. Which earned a sneer fueled by teenage angst ( despite the fact that he was in his early twenties ). âwhat? am I wearinâ somethinâ of yours?â
the curious flutter of her eyelashes was a second nature at this point. if curiosity killed the cat, then satisfaction brought summer back. she could hardly stop herself from sketching the image in her head. ânothing, just thinking the image would make a good painting.â

âI need to get out more,â Evie sighed, slumping down on her couch and kicking her feet up onto the coffee table â that didnât last long, though, and she ended up moving them only a few seconds later. âI mean, Iâm twenty-six years old. I should have a life outside of my job, shouldnât I? Where did I go wrong?â
âiâm twenty-eight,â dinah said almost imperceptibly. she flushed shamefully, evie had the right idea. the thought of going out after work shot her nerves to hell but she was almost thirty and hadnât been in a serious relationship for five years. that was what her younger sister would have called lame. âyou didnât go wrong, different strokes for different folks.â

âwould you please move?â the voice was everything less than nice about the request, but where the request was coming from was a little confusing. you had to look up into the tree to find the source, and there it was. oliver-titus was hanging onto the tree branch with his legs and had his camera ready. âyou are in the frame.âÂ
âi am the frame.â mj replied sourly. she kicked the bale of hay up on her knee obscuring her visage. her relationship with oliver-titus was a tenuous one based on mutual annoyance and a genteel truce.

âoh okay, yeah, let me just pull out my nonexistent money right here quick.â he gladly accepted the hug and returned it with a bear hug, he didnât want to admit that he missed his family when he was gone, but it always did his heart good to see them again. even if his cousin did everything in her power to get him dirty. âi pulled up just now, actually.âÂ
growing up in seattle it had always been her and her mom, after losing her it had been strange to come to holiday and gain a family. after sheâd come to her senses eli had quickly become her favorite cousin though sheâd be hard pressed to admit that. âso tell me about it?! you didnât get anyone pregnant did you?â

some people questioned how rose and rachel were best friends, but they were, and rachel hardly cared who thought they didnât work. âow!â she cursed, reaching back to ruffle her hair where the impact was. âcan we agree that i just lessen the amount of days, but not the amount per night?â she joked, rose was hardly wrong, and rachel was spiraling down in the stupidest of ways. rachel needed to get her life together, and rose was the kick in the butt she always needed. âugh, but heâs so cuuuuute.â she dragged on, fake drunkenly. âi know, i know, i need to stop just sleeping around, too.â
the soft crooning of the ink spots rang from the carefully placed speakers in the bar. the night had taken the day just as swiftly as it had left the time before and holiday brewing stood a sailorâs beacon on main street. âit doesnât matter if you sleep around the sexual revolution has come and gone babe, just donât sleep with eli.â maybe rose was being dramatic but the extreme tended to work better with rachel then gentle nudging.Â

â you know something that i donât about what happens after midnight? that makes you a gremlin. are you done? can i see? â he rocked forward on the balls of his feet, stuffing his hands in his pockets. â there could be a million suns if you think of people as suns. or as like, a cosmic unit, i guess. a smileâs been said to âlight up a roomâ since the dawn of prose. personifications of the sun exist in every theology ever studied. we are suns, bro. â
summer stood on her toes to reach up and ruffle his hair all grins and satisfaction. âyouâre my favorite sun, just so you know.â she turned over her sketchbook hands smudged with graphic and pastels. âi put the sunrise inside of you, see!â she motioned to where his visage had been filled with reds and yellow and pinks in place of flesh.

âthere are people that wouldnât agree with you on that one.â bennett hummed softly, there were officers older than him, more experienced, other deputies that could have taken over but bennett had been hand picked to take the place and many didnât think he deserved it. âbut if you would only like to be addressed as a dr from now on, then count me in, in fact i can start from tonight if you like, we can see how much you enjoy it.âÂ
âyeah well you know as anyone that disagreeing with me usually means youâre wrong.â she quipped leaning back into her chair. âthe day i get my doctorate youâre welcome to call me doctor all night.â she laughed. âuntil then rose is fine.â

âyou should really see the other guy,â beau had been rambling on and on while the girlâs silence was a sign of her focus, his expressions and hand gestures ( at least, as best as he could manage without getting in the way of the nurseâs work too much ) as animated as ever. despite his attempt to make light of the situation, it was a known fact that there was no other guy. it was beauâs own doing to ignore previous doctorâs orders and get himself banged up in an impromptu bout of street hockey, but if it continued to land him here, was it really so bad? it was a thought to consider when dinah announced sheâd finished. racking fingers back through his hair, beau couldnât help himself from asking a playful, âi am still your favorite, right?â
her traitorous stomach flipped at his words. getting flustered was a special talent of dinahâs, she excelled in producing such specific shades of red in her cheeks or stuttering her words until they were incomprehensible. she steeled her gaze, she was a professional damn it and she wouldnât be caught off guard by every pretty boy that came into the hospital. âyou wonât be my favorite anymore if youâre comatose. you need to be more careful! not playing hockey for a few months is worth the rest of your career.â she mumbled under her breath, âbesides god forbid youâre out so long the bruins actually win a game.â

âYouâre a better bartender than they are,â Mack shrugged and took a swig of her drink. âAnd youâre so much nicer. Who cares about taxes?â Okay, so she might be just a tiny bit tipsy. But her mind was clear enough to know what she meant. âMake bartending your full time job.â
Rose shook her head. âI could never Mack, besides, I like doing finances. Some people get economics degrees because its a stable career but I did it because I enjoy it. Itâs nice to accomplish something every day that Iâm good at, and to have everything planned out.â

Isabelle gave her as confident a smile as she could muster as she fished for her keys. âThank you, really. You have no idea how much youâve helped.â She paused for a moment. âIs there anything I can do for you in return?â Even though Isabelle probably knew she should drop it and just grab the box again and go to her car, her instincts of wanting to please everyone kicked in, and she had noticed that the girl didnât seem as peppy as some others in town had today.
dinahâs flushed again, unsure of how to answer. âuh, tell me where you got those cupcakes.â she complied. âthey smell delicious.â a sweet sense of comfort came over her being in the presence of someone who it seemed understood her attitude towards others.

Lizzie grinned as Rose got her her drink. âWhy thank you,â she said, echoing the almost fairytale way Rose had agreed to getting the drink. âAre you trying to get me drunk?â Lizzie joked as she was offered a free drink, with a cock of her head and a bite of her lip before laughing.Â
âSo I can take advantage of you and make you buy an endless stream of drinks? I would never.â She grinned playfully. âNo itâs just nice to have someone here who isnât looking down my shirt or getting into a fight.â
