A PSA for Bungou to Alchemist

With the news about the anime adaptation for Bunal (hooray!), I’d like to take a moment to just say to all Bunal fans, both old and new.

Please DO NOT discuss the game/anime incarnations of the characters using their full names.

This isn’t like BSD where they’re just loosely based on the actual people. The concept of Bunal is that the ACTUAL REAL PEOPLE have been reincarnated. It’s absolutely crucial to be careful when discussing them because of that.

Firstly, we don’t want to clog up google searches with anime boys. since these are supposed to be real people, anything that happened in the author’s life is canon to the character. And we want to know as much as we can about them. Doing research becomes difficult when half the results are fan material.

Secondly, THESE ARE REAL PEOPLE. They have grandchildren who are very much still alive (and several of them know about Bunal). We need to be respectful to the people, their memories, and their families.

And finally, talking shit about the real people can seriously get people in trouble. I’m not pulling this out of my ass guys, there really have been incidents where people got into serious shit for things like fanart. Japan takes this stuff extremely seriously, and you can get sued.

The Japanese fandom already takes care to not even refer to the characters with even first/last names (they use nicknames), and us Western fandom folks should be careful too. This is a lovely game and fandom and I’d like to see it thrive.

there’s something really cool about watching people get attached to a historical figure

like, i start off every single one of my classes by reading to my students from marcus aurelius’s meditations, and you would be amazed how much a middle schooler can love a stoic philosopher from ancient rome. they love to try and figure out what each reading means (especially if it’s about death lol). they get so excited when they hear about marcus aurelius outside of class and make sure to tell me the next time they see me. when i miss a day, they insist that their substitute reads their marcus aurelius quote for them. by the end of the year, they love marcus aurelius. he’s basically their friend. anytime he has a weird quote, they fondly say things like “oh, marcus, back at it again”

there’s a certain joy people can get from realizing that somebody from the ancient past was actually super relatable and enjoyable, and i just think that’s neat
