Relationships were never something important for you. It was more of a friendship with benefits. It was easier to date a guy instead of searching for a one night stand. You always tried to love those guys but you couldn’t. You saw flaws in them and you just couldn’t ignore it. 

Each time, you felt like the relationship was getting too serious, you were ending them. You didn’t want them hurt just because you couldn’t love them. It became a pattern for you and slowly, you accepted that you’ll never be truly happy and you’ll never love anyone. Your heart was unavailable for love. 

Everything had changed when you met Sidney. At first, you were seeing him as a colleague, as someone who’s in the same group of people. It was another dinner with your coworkers when one of them invited Sidney. When you looked at him, you noticed straight away how handsome he was. 

During the dinner, you were listening to every word Sidney said. He was smart but he wasn’t showing off how smart he is. He had knowledge about almost every topic and with passion he was telling his opinions. You never met someone like him and you were intrigued by him. With time, everyone was going back home after paying for the dinner but you and Sidney stayed in the restaurant. 

“I haven’t heard your opinion about more hours of sport in schools” Sidney said to you. Your coworker was bragging about how her child is miserable that there’s not so many sports classes and has to pay for his training. 

“It’s tough for me to speak about it. I didn’t like sports in school and for me, the less the better but now, as I’m older, I see how important they are. I don’t have kids and I don’t know what it looks like now so I just stayed quiet” You explained and took a sip of your wine. 

“I see. I understand your view. It’s interesting you know, with time we’re growing up and we can notice things that were useless for us in the past are important now” Sidney said and you nodded. “I propose to pay for the dinner and go somewhere else to chat. I want to know you better because you see things way differently than I do and it’s fascinating. Unless you have something to do” Sidney proposed.

“We can go somewhere” You told him. You wanted to go back home because you had work in the morning but you were interested in him and you wanted to get to know him better. 

That night, you and Sidney were talking about everything and nothing. You were having many conversations about controversial topics and even if you had different opinions, it wasn’t a screaming match to prove one another who’s right. You were calmly explaining to each other why you think this way. 

Sidney was intrigued by you. You were way different than other women he knew. You never tried to show off, you were yourself. He was impressed by that. In his life, he was always surrounded by women who were trying so hard to be like him to have his interest but you didn't care about it. 

This dinner turned into your weekly dates with Sidney. Even if none of you called it like that, it was like a date. He was always driving to pick you up, never let you pay and was listening to your every sentence. The two of you bonded on just talking. You were much younger than him but he didn’t care. All he cared about was your personality. 

It’s been three months since you two started going out every week and you developed a crush on Sidney. You felt like he’s the missing piece in your life. Never before have you felt so heard by any man. With excitement you were waiting for another dinner with him. The topics never ended, you two were talking about everything and nothing. 

Sidney felt similar towards you. He felt like you’re the perfect woman for him because you were interested in him as a person and not as an athlete. All the small things like you arguing to pay or you not wanting him to drive on the other part of the city just to pick you up showed him that you don’t want his money. 

It was another dinner for you two. Sidney picked you up from your work and drove you to the restaurant where you two met. This place had a meaning for him now and wanted this date to be another chapter in your relationship. Like always, you’ve been sharing your opinions and experiences. You didn’t sense anything suspicious. 

“How do you feel about relationships?” Sidney asked you and you froze. You didn’t know what to tell him. 

“Um, yeah…” You started. “I’ve been in a couple but I never felt the special bond or connection so I don’t know how I exactly feel. Why are you asking?” 

“I’ll get straight to the point. I find you very attractive. Not only your appearance but your personality too. With you, I feel completed and I want to take the next step with you. I want you as my partner” Sidney told you truthfully. 

“I feel very similar but I’m scared” You sighed. “I was always running away when the things were getting too serious and I don’t want this for us” 

“Let’s try. Let's see where things will lead us. We both want each other and we can take it slowly. I’m not proposing to you or planning our future. I just want you as a person who I can visit anytime, who I can kiss, who I can spoil” Sidney smiled at you. 

“I like your way of thinking. We can try it but can you promise me that if this won’t work out for us, we will stay friends?” You asked him. 

“Of course” Sidney grabbed your hand and caressed it. You smiled at this gesture and felt like you finally felt someone to fill the gap in your heart with love.

Love was such a bizarre feeling. So complicated to understand. You’ve never before been in a relationship and that’s what makes it so difficult to know what exactly it is. Until you met the guy, who was perfect in your thinking. His name was Kyle and you wanted him. The twist was that he didn’t want you. 

Kyle was a guy you had classes with. He was tall, with blond hair and green eyes. You fell for him when you saw him. Later, when you were working on a project, you met him a little bit better and his personality was everything for you. He was funny, kind and helpful. He was a man written by a woman. 

You didn’t know how it works. You were clueless how to tell him that you like him but you had a friend who you knew since kindergarten. It was Luke and you shared everything with him. That’s why you went to him with the question. 

“What do I do if I like a guy?” You asked Luke when you walked into his bedroom. 

“Hello to you too” Luke said. “What guy?” 

“Kyle. I’m having classes with him and he’s perfect” You jumped on his bed. 

“Do you talk with him?” Luke asked. 

“Yeah, we’re friends” You said. “Why?”

“Keep him close and see where things will go” Luke shrugged. “Don’t tell him straight away so he won’t break your heart. Try to figure it out” 

“Thanks Luke” You smiled. “Pizza and movie?” 

“I’ll order pizza, you pick a movie” Luke told you. 

When you left him alone, Luke could feel how his heart broke into a thousand pieces. He loved you since you two were 14 years old but he was always too shy to admit this. Now, you were asking him for advice on how to get a guy and he really wanted to sabotage you. He wanted to have you just for yourself but you were his friend. He wanted you to be happy. 

You listened to Luke and always tried to talk with Kyle. A couple times, you tried to ask him out but he always rejected the offer. You started thinking that the problem was with you but you didn’t want to give up so easily. You wanted him even if it wasn’t mutual but you couldn’t see it. 

Every word that Kyle said, you believed. You never doubt him even when you could see later that he’s doing the opposite he told you. With time, you started getting miserable that the guy you wanted didn’t want you but what really was your final straw was seeing him with another girl. 

You were heartbroken. You started feeling like you don’t deserve to be loved. Luke could see the change in your behaviour. You didn’t want to visit him. You were spending the whole day in your room, crying into a pillow over a guy who wasn’t even your boyfriend. You knew that this was pathetic but you couldn’t help it. 

Luke wanted to help you. He tried to talk with you but you never said a word to him. Through another person he found out that Kyle was dating someone and that’s why you were so miserable. That’s why he went to the store and bought you the sweets you love and flowers to brighten up your mood a little bit. 

“I heard what happened and I’m sorry for it” Luke said when you opened the door. 

“It’s dumb” You told him and let him in. 

“Your feelings are not dumb. Come here” Luke said and brought you into a hug. You broke down in tears. “Let’s get you into your bedroom so we can lay and do completely nothing” 

You were talking to Luke about how you feel and he listened to every word. He felt bad for you and wished he could take all the negativity from you so you know only happiness. This conversation helped you to see more and realise more about the concept of love. You knew that everything had to be time and not everyone’s perfect, even if they look like that. 

Luke knew that now might be his chance to share his feelings with you. He waited enough and was ready to tell you everything. At the same time he was well aware that he can’t throw it at you right now. You needed to heal first before he would finally admit how he really feels towards you. 

But you weren’t blind. You noticed some changes in Luke’ behaviour towards you since that night. He was more present than usual. He always asked you if you needed a ride back home, always tried to visit you or invited you to his place. You saw that he’s acting towards you very similar to how you were acting towards Kyle. 

That’s why you started wondering if Luke likes you or he’s just polite. This wondering turned you into thinking what Luke means to you. After all these years, you saw that he was always by your side, always tried to help you and never turned you down. You started looking at him like a love object and not just a friend. He was the perfect man you were searching for. 

Luck was on Luke’s side. He bought you flowers and went to see you to finally admit what he really feels to you. It’s been two months since that night and he felt like this was a perfect moment. When you opened the door, you smiled widely, ready to tell him the truth. This time, you didn’t care about rejection, you knew you had to be transparent and honest and don’t play around. 

“I bought you the flowers” Luke handed you the flowers. 

“They’re beautiful. Thank you” You told him and grabbed a vase to put them there. “I’ll be back in a moment, let me pour a water” Luke nodded and went into your bedroom. 

Luke started feeling nervous and could feel how sweaty his hands were. You walked into the room with the flowers and Luke immediately smiled. You were looking like a goddess with the flowers. You lighten up the room just by walking into it. His heart melted on how beautiful you were. 

“You look great” Luke said shyly and you could feel your cheeks burning. 

“Thank you” You said and put the flowers on your desk. There was an uncomfortable silence. For the first time since you two know each other, none of you know what to say. 

“So…” Luke started.

“So…” You repeated. 

“I had a full speech prepared in my head but I forgot all my words when you walked here” Luke admitted. “What I wanted to tell you is that I like you but not like a friend. Like a girlfriend, future wife. I can’t imagine my life without you and I’m in love with you” 

“Luke…” You took a deep breath. “I like you too, like I really like you. I see it now how much you mean to me and how lost I would be without you” 

“Can I kiss you?” Luke asked you. 

“Please” Without another word, Luke grabbed your cheeks and kissed your lips. It was a new chapter for the two of you and you knew that it’s gonna be an endgame for you and Luke.
