AH okay the parallels between this specific scene in Someone Great and part of the first verse of “Death By A Thousand Cuts” are so cool. In the scene, Jenny (the main character) is writing a letter in her journal to Nate, her ex-boyfriend. They just broken up after a 9 year relationship the night before. She wrote “I met you when everything was new and exciting and the possibilities of the world seemed endless, and they still are. for you, for me, but not for us.” She writes this just after seeing him at a party that they used to go to together. In “Death By A Thousand Cuts,” Taylor writes “what once was ours/ is no one’s now/ I see you everywhere, the only thing we share/ Is this small town/ you said it was a great love/ one for the ages/ but if the story's over, why am I still writing pages?” I just think it’s so cool to be able to see Taylor’s inspiration for a song within another piece of art and how she translates the story into music.

“I used to be like a golden retriever, just walking up to everybody, like, wagging my tail. ’Sure, yeah, of course! What do you want to know? What do you need?’ Now, I guess, I have to be a little bit more like a fox.”

It’s about the illusions of what I thought America was before our political landscape took this turn, and that naivete that we used to have about it.
