Architecture graduate wins global competition

University of Bath architecture graduate, Justin Bean, has been awarded this year’s Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) President’s Medal for undergraduate students.

The RIBA President’s Bronze Medal is awarded annually to the best undergraduate project, with this year seeing a record number of 125 entries nominated by schools of architecture from across the world.

Justin graduated this summer from the BSc Architecture programme and it was his final year project, ‘Dreaming of Electric Sheep’, which led to him being recognised by RIBA.

Explaining his project and commenting on winning this award, Justin said: “Dreaming of Electric Sheep is the culmination of intensive research, analysis and iteration; an approach embraced by the Bath design studio. Our relationship with technology and how we choose to live alongside one another has never been so complex; however I believe that there is huge potential for a new architectural epoch for human and machine.

“Being awarded the RIBA Bronze Medal gives me great honour and has provided me with an incredible platform to discuss these ideas further.”

Justin’s design tutor and Teaching Fellow in the University’s Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, Frank Lyons, was at RIBA in London to see the award announced and commented: “It was a pleasure to work with Justin last year on his individual project, ‘Dreaming of Electric Sheep’. It was a provocative, wonderfully creative and thoroughly resolved piece of work that challenged us to examine carefully our relationship with technology. What a delight for him to be picking up the RIBA President’s Bronze Medal, very well deserved, congratulations.”

RIBA President Ben Derbyshire, commented: “The breadth and scale of talent evidenced in the design proposals and writings produced by this year’s winners is truly remarkable. This is an emerging generation of skilled thinkers who are able to distil complex ideas and resolve them into sophisticated architectural proposals. They are all talents to watch.”

Head of Architecture at the University of Bath, Professor Alex Wright, added: “We’re delighted for Justin. This is one of a number of design prizes awarded to our students over the last few years and this continued success is an entirely fair reflection of their dedication and ability.”

The success of students studying architecture at Bath is synonymous with the strength of this degree programme. The University’s BSc Architecture course, delivered in the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, is ranked number one in both The 2019 Complete University Guide and the Good University Guide 2019.

Architecture at Bath has also been ranked first in at least one of the national league tables for the past decade, an achievement which no other university can match for this subject.

CSCT Blog: Sustainability in Practice

Maria is a final year PhD student in Professor Tony James' group working on diagnostic tools for early cancer detection.

I worked within the sustainability team of Reckitt Benckiser (RB) from the end of July until the end of September. Some of the reasons why I decided to do this placement were:

Getting ideas for jobs after the PhD

Seeing how large multinational companies address sustainability in different areas

Applying my sustainability, clean tech and environmental management knowledge from the MRes year in a real-life context

Escaping the famous 2nd year PhD blues

RB has a vast portfolio of products ranging from hygiene and household to healthcare products used in everyday life. Some prominent examples are: Nurofen, Strepsils and Lemsip for healthcare, Finish and Vanish for household applications and Clearasil, and Scholl for hygiene. With such a diverse product range, this brings different types of challenges when it comes to sustainability aspects.

The sustainability team of RB is based in Slough and Hull, addressing various areas including but not limited to sustainable manufacturing and sourcing, sustainable product design, life cycle analysis, and chemical and hazard considerations.

During my time at RB, I had the opportunity to work on two projects: 1) chemical hazard assessment and risk exposure when considering ingredients within existing and novel products and 2) pharmaceuticals in the environment. Both projects exposed me to different products, legislations and challenges. At the end of my internship, I had the opportunity to present my results at the site in Slough in front of the entire sustainability team.

The city centre of Hull is nice and offers good shopping and different museums. In particular, the area by the Marina has been nicely done with the Deep and the Fruit Market at the heart of it.

While living in Hull, I also took the opportunity to visit different places and catch-up with friends living in these areas. I managed to visit quite a few different cities in the north of England.

York, Newcastle, Durham, Nottingham, Leeds, Edinburgh, Sheffield

I would recommend an internship in industry that is not lab-based to anyone who is not entirely sure what to do after the PhD. It gives you a good understanding of other careers and allows you to realise whether you want a research focused career or not.

Finally, I would like to thank the sustainability team in Hull for a great two months, in particular Oliver Price with whom I worked closely on both projects and who gave me the opportunity to join RB and the CSCT for providing funding.

Staff Spotlight on… Frances Laughton, Physics

How long have you worked at the Uni? What does your role involve?

I have worked here since 1993. 25 years – that’s scary! I left briefly in 2001, and went to a silicon photonics company just in time for the ‘bust’ of the dot com ‘boom and bust’. My first meeting on my first day working there was to discuss the first round of redundancies! And I was also 6 months pregnant with my third child at the time. It was an interesting experience, but in the end we were all made redundant, and so I came back to the uni after a couple of years. So I’ve basically been here for 25 years, despite an ill-fated attempt at escape.

I am Director of Teaching in the Department of Physics. I am responsible for looking after teaching and learning in the Department, which includes looking after the students and the staff (and sometimes keeping them in order!).

What would you most like to achieve while at the University?

I suppose I would like to help engender an environment where the students can really make the most of themselves, where they can learn, develop and grow, in all sorts of ways – academically and non-academically. I think there’s a lot to be said for the gardening metaphor for education – I want our department to be a really good flower bed for them to bloom in!

Name one thing that makes you feel proud to work at the University of Bath?

I think it is my colleagues – the team we have got in Physics. It’s that we genuinely do care about the students and it (usually!) feels like we’re all on the same team.

What piece of advice would you like to give to a student?

It’s a very short time being at university, and it’s really important to make the most of it in all sorts of ways.

Don’t be afraid to say that you don’t understand something, in fact I think it is imperative that you do! Sometimes you’ll need real grit and determination – it takes effort to fully understand some of the harder concepts in our courses. Students sometimes don’t want to admit that they don’t understand something, because they think that everyone else does – I suspect there’s a fair bit of faking going on, though! I think honesty is critical for learning, in all sorts of ways.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a librarian. I was really bookish - I learnt to read very early and I was always reading. I had a dolls pram, which I didn’t use to put dolls in - instead I would fill it with books and wheel it around making people borrow books from my ‘library’, which I would then stamp, probably very officiously!

What was your first job?

My first job was playing the piano in what I thought at the time (the 1980s) was a very fancy bistro restaurant. Although they rapidly roped me in to rather more than that. Some evenings I’d also be hanging up the customers’ fur coats (it was the 1980s, after all), making starters in the kitchen, waiting on tables, and working behind the bar. Then any time it got a bit quieter the restaurant owner would say “Where’s me atmosphere?”, and I’d have to jump back to the piano. The customers looked a bit startled at times!

I’ve done a lot of other holiday jobs over the years. As well as the usual pub and restaurant jobs, I drove an ice cream van in San Diego, worked in a video dating agency (called Great Expectations, and every bit as hideous as it sounds!), and did cold call telesales, trying (and weirdly, often succeeding) to sell a year’s worth of vitamins to random people.

If you could start your own dream business, what would it be?

I’m not sure I’m that interested in a business as such. I suppose if I was going to do a dream thing it would be something around mediation or restorative justice. I have done quite a lot of mediation, both community based and at the uni - I’m not doing it at the moment, but it’s something I’d like to get back into.

Where is your favourite holiday destination and why?

It’s Mexico. We went to Mexico a couple of years ago and it was just stunning. The history, the culture, the scenery, the people, the food - it’s an incredible place.

My husband and I also went there when we were travelling in 1986 - we had no money then, and it was really pretty dodgy. So it was great to revisit it thirty years later in a very different way. We took the kids with us - it was really special being able to share it with them and have a more comfortable, less dangerous time than we did before!

What’s your favourite album and why?

I think I would probably go for Flesh and Blood by Roxy Music. Not because I think it’s the greatest album ever, but because it’s just so evocative of my teenage years. Some of the riffs still give me butterflies in my stomach!

When are you happiest?

Either on holiday with my family, or at times playing music. I play violin in an orchestra, and it can be really magical when things really come together in a concert, and everyone’s putting their heart and soul into it.

Somewhat less magically, we have a Department of Physics string quartet! We haven’t played in a long time, and we’re very bad - so bad that I play first violin. We would hack our way through various quartets and drink red wine, which was a great combination - whenever we played badly we would just drink more wine and then we sounded much better!

Which one superpower would you like to possess?

Controlling time. It would be great to have something like a TV remote control to speed up or slow down time. To slow down family holidays and speed up some meetings!

Tell us your favourite joke

I’m terrible at jokes! This is the only joke I can remember: How many ears does Captain Kirk have? Three – the right ear, the left ear and the final front ear.

Azulejos Tiles of Portugal

I just returned from my whirlwind trip to Portugal, I saw *so much* in the nine days I spent there, and I’ll do a recap post in the coming weeks of this magical country!

As you know, I’m always inspired by traveling to new cities and countries, for me the best thing in life is the intersection of travel and design. There was no shortage of ceramic tile inspiration in Portugal, in fact it’s one of the primary reasons I journeyed there, to witness it in real life and I was completely mesmerized by it. Every town I visited had its share of buildings covered in azulejos tile in incredible patterns, it filled me with such happiness seeing such beautiful tile around every corner.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, azulejos depicted religious or historical scenes, I saw many of them at the National Tile Museum in Lisbon and in churches and historical places. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Portuguese began using azulejos tiles in repeating motifs on buildings, and today they dominate the exteriors of small towns and larger cities. Azulejos tiles embellish not just the residences of Portugal but also churches, restaurants, fountains, and railway stations.

I captured dozens of tile images for my own inspiration files, here are some of the pictures I took as I strolled the streets that showcase the beauty of azulejos tiles on exteriors around Portugal. Notice the differences in the motifs, some are more modern geometrics, others are more intricate and old world, but all unique.

I had such a fantastic experience in this country, walking the streets of smaller towns like Albufeira and Aveiro and larger cities like Lisbon and Porto. The food, the wine, the people, the cafes, the vistas, they were all incredible! I’ll do a recap of my favorite experiences soon. :)

Six questions to make your hotel safer for guests

Enjoy the travel industry so much that you’ve decided to open your own hotel or guest house? That’s great, though there will be so much to consider in the early days. How will you make your hotel stand out from the competition? Who is your target audience going to be? Which techniques are you going to utilise to try and make a return on your investment?

As well as all of this, you must plan how you are going to keep people who are staying at your hotel safe. With this in mind, read through these six questions and make sure you’re answering yes to them all…

Do you have CCTV set up?

Guests at your hotel will be reassured of their safety if they spot that you’ve installed security cameras around your establishment. However, just having a surveillance system in place isn’t enough. Be sure to constantly monitor your set-up, even if this means hiring a third-party company to do so. Certain systems also come with a voice command option, which means that if you spot any wrong-doing, you can quickly warn those involved to stop their actions.

Is your online data protected?

In the digital age, the physical safety of guests at your hotel is no longer enough. Hotels have become a prime target for cyber attacks. According to a report by PwC, the hospitality industry has the second-highest number of cybersecurity breaches, with most of the prominent hotels in the industry having fallen victim to breaches.

You’ll reduce the risk of suffering a cybersecurity breach and heighten the security of all your files and information by regularly updating your IT systems. You should also be making sure that backing up your data becomes a habit, so you can eliminate the risk of losing it or having it irretrievably damaged. A recommended strategy is to use a cloud service daily, have weekly server backups, and follow these up with quarterly server backups and then yearly backups.

Have passwords in place throughout your company? Just be sure to change them often and also make sure you change them any time a staff member leaves to avoid any breaches.

Do you regularly check your electric supply?

When you’re operating a hotel or guest house, it’s crucial to carry out a regular Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). This is because, since your business is constantly running, your systems can be subject to wear, tear, corrosion and overloading. Such a report, which must be carried out by a qualified electrician, will ensure that the electrical appliances in each room are fit for purpose.

Conduct these checks every so often. That way, you’ll be limiting the risk of electrical shocks, fires and accidents, and therefore reducing accidents in the workplace – something which is a legal requirement since the introduction of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

Do you regularly check your gas supply?

You need to be checking your gas mains and appliances regularly too. The Gas Safety Regulations 1998 states that you must arrange annual gas safety checks for any appliances that are serving guest accommodation, even if it’s sited away from the guests’ rooms.

Don’t forget to also take the time to train members of staff about how to use gas appliances correctly throughout your hotel. Show them how to carry our visual checks as well, so they can spot obvious faults. This could include any damaged pipework or connections. While any new installations must be carried out by someone who is Gas Safe-registered, anyone can change a LPG gas cylinder or hose once they are competent to do so.

Installing carbon monoxide and dioxide alarms is another thing that must be on your to-do list when opening a hotel or guest house. These alarms can signify any fault and help you avoid any catastrophes. They should give an audible alarm when levels are dangerous and should be able to automatically shut off your gas system.

Have you set up a clear emergency response plan?

Everyone who works at your hotel needs to know how to act in the event they are caught up in an emergency. Regular meetings with law enforcement and emergency services should be scheduled so you have a good communication plan in place and can update it as and when required. In doing so, you can prepare your staff so that everyone is calm and knowledgeable in a worst-case scenario.

Aneil Handa is the director of the hotel group Cairn. She stated: “We make sure all our staff have sufficient training to know how to act in an emergency. Communication is key as it’s clear we must be calm and composed in critical moments as this can help us make sure both our guests and staff members are as safe as possible and can help avoid possible catastrophes.”

Does your staff wear a uniform?

Corporate uniform really should be worn by all staff members at a hotel. Not only does it help your business look professional and smart, but it also gives your guests a clear view of who they can approach about a query, and who indeed is allowed in certain areas of the business. In guest areas, knowing who members of staff are is essential. This is because it shows that your company have guests’ safety at the forefront due to staff always patrolling the areas.

The first two are sheep (top) and penguin (below) Organic cotton flannels. These are single layer pillows. I usually don't go for cartoon animals, but I found these irresistible. I thought the sheep would be fun for people who like to take their pillows to bed or who have trouble sleeping. We are partial to penguins, they being the Linux operating system mascot, so this fabric was a must have also.

The two pillows below are also new, they are part of our pillow line which has removable washable Organic cotton covers.
