-keep your blinds down and curtains drawn
-have fans going
-keep an eye on your pets and make sure they have ready access to water
-know the signs of heatstroke!

#; ooc thingamabobs#okay okay trying to dredge up from what I recall living in TX:#if you're super hot but STOP sweating (and are like. still in the heat) that is REALLY fucking bad news. that's heatstroke.#get yourself into a cool shaded area and get some water ASAP#like. you're a gnat's ass away from going into the confusion + seizures combo. bad time.#you need way more water than you think you do.#you also need more /electrolytes/ than you think you do. people tend to forget that one#water is SUPER important but an electrolyte imbalance also sucks lmao#putting a wet towel over your head/around your neck does feel fabulous if there's moving air#but it starts losing effectiveness as the humidity spikes high enough. at least IME#seems like the water stops having places to evaporate TO#and generally just try to stay outta the sun except early in the morning and late in the evening (and the latter can be dicey)#(if you're somewhere with a bunch of concrete/other such heatsinks that radiate it out even when the sun is down)#also your local area may or may not have cooling centers. gotta look that up for wherever you live to see if they do#OH YEAH ALSO. some people on SSRIs find it makes them more sensitive to heat (like me :'D) so be careful about that

everything is very bad in this modern age but i truly think Merlin Bird ID App is a wonder so astonishing that it almost makes everything else worth it. like you can just sit somewhere and listen to birds and 4 minutes later you will know stuff you didn't know before. not only that but you might even retain that knowledge. this morning i sat with my coffee and let Merlin record my surroundings for 4 minutes and now i know 1) what a northern parula sounds like 2) that i have been listening to northern parulas for years without being aware that they even existed. this cheerful little gold-and-gray guy has been trilling at me my whole life and i've never known his name and now i do! you can sit there and hear something and think "that sounds familiar, i'd like to know what that is" and then look down and see the little bird ID light up LIVE. ohhh of course, a red-eyed vireo, how could i have forgotten. AI good actually.
