How to Clean Smelly Boxing and MMA Gloves
Although there are differences between MMA and boxing gloves, to clean them you have to follow the same steps since the bad smell is generated by the same phenomenon and because the materials are usually the same. Let's start with the step by step!
1. Use an absorbent cloth or towel to dry your sweaty boxing gloves after cleaning them
The first step is actually to take your gloves out of the bag where you have them (obviously) but the idea is that you do this as soon as you get home after using them, so that they are exposed to natural air and dry before.
Then, use an absorbent cloth or towel to remove excess moisture in and out of each glove. Be sure to try to absorb the most sweat inside the glove by pressing the towel against the inner walls.
2. Clean the inside of your boxing gloves
We will clean the inside of the gloves with a special solution. There are even ways to prepare it at home, but the ingredients are hard to come by. If you don't want to complicate your life and want to guarantee the well-being of your gloves, buy a prepared solution like this. It is quite cheap.
3. Clean the outside of your boxing gloves
Use antibacterial towels or the towel with the solution you bought to wash the boxing gloves or MMA on the outside. Then with an absorbent towel remove all the liquid.
4. Let your boxing gloves dry after cleaning them
The most important thing when cleaning boxing gloves is that they dry well inside, also for those of Mixed Martial Arts. For that we have several options:
Fold the entrances of the gloves and hang them outdoors (protected from the sun) and wait for the natural airflow to take effect.
Another favorite is to take the newspaper and fill the inside of the gloves. This paper is excellent absorbing moisture.
Tumblr media
If it is something urgent and you have no option to wait, you can use an electric hairdryer and put it inside the glove for a short time. However, it is not advisable to do this often because it can quickly dehydrate the material of your gloves and it will start to come off.
The best solution I've seen so far and the truth is quite economical, is to buy Meister absorbent protectors, designed exclusively for boxing gloves. They are also obtained in the Everlast brand.
Tips to extend the life of your boxing gloves and keep them clean
There is nothing better to fight the bad smell and wear martial arts equipment than prevention.
In that order of ideas, these tips are going to help you keep your Boxing or MMA gloves in excellent condition in case you have already eliminated the bad smell or in case they are new (luckily yours!).
Always wear bandages under your boxing gloves
Boxing bandages, which are also used in MMA, will form a protective shield between your hands and gloves, as they will absorb a lot of the sweat you generate during training. This will prevent sweat from being completely impregnated inside your gloves and therefore, the bad smell will not be generated so easily.
Many people hate putting on bandages because it takes them a long time ... that's because they don't know how to bandage their hands correctly.
Important: You should wash your boxing bandages regularly to avoid the same problem of bacteria generation.
Leave your boxing gloves outdoors
Something that accelerates the generation of bad smell is that your gloves have no airflow. To avoid this, try not to keep them in your gym bag or briefcase as soon as you finish using them, instead try to take them outdoors and then hang them in a place where the natural air helps them dry.
Tumblr media
DO NOT leave your boxing drying in the sun
Leaving gloves drying in the sun is NOT convenient because excessive heat will dehydrate them, and over time they will begin to deteriorate. If you need to leave them outdoors they should be indoors, or not to leave them in the sun for long periods.
Use a moisturizer or conditioner for your boxing gloves
There are several products to hydrate the leather of different accessories. It is nothing different for boxing gloves or MMA made with this material. These products help prevent the material from drying out quickly and start cracking.
They usually come as a cream or liquid solution that should be applied gently on the outer surface of the gloves.
Important: This applies only to clean leather boxing gloves and is not necessary for synthetic gloves. If you knew how to choose good MMA gloves, you will have fewer problems in this aspect.
Can you wash MMA or Boxing gloves?
Yes, you can, but it is not recommended and if you can do it  NEVER put them in the automatic washing machine.
Washing your MMA or Boxing gloves in the washing machine is bad for several reasons:
The washing process mistreats the materials that the boxing gloves are made from
The soap used in a washing machine is too strong for the glove material. Leather and water are not best friends, so you have to avoid soaking them. When soaking the gloves it will be quite difficult to dry them completely, allowing the generation of bacteria due to the humidity that we are trying to avoid from the beginning. So in conclusion, I would NOT recommend washing the gloves by soaking them completely in water.

How To Clean Boxing Gloves With A Bad Smell
This fresh scent of fresh shelf products emanating from new clean boxing gloves usually doesn't last long without proper cleaning routines. Boxing gloves don't just stain with blood, sweat, and tears when in contact with an opponent; their interior also suffers from the accumulation of sweat and bacteria, which can lead to terrible odors. Fortunately, it is possible to remove these odors using basic household items.
Instructions for cleaning smelly boxing gloves
Open your fingers near the boxing glove hole to widen it. Apply unpleasant odor removing gloves such as Good Air. This type of product removes bad odors from fabrics such as clothing and fabrics. Many of them also have antibacterial properties that prevent bacteria from multiplying inside the gloves.
Cleaning and sanitation of your boxing gloves
To effectively maintain your boxing gloves, the first aspect not to skimp is the verification of its humidity or not after each use to avoid the development of microbes and other pathogenic germs.
For this reason, after using your boxing gloves, remove them from your bag as soon as possible. Bacteria grow there due to sweating. When not dried, these gloves remain wet, creating bad odors.
Tumblr media
So dry them with a dry towel or cloth. Surrounding your hand with the towel, immerse it inside the glove so that it can absorb excess moisture. Move your hand inside the glove to make sure the towel has absorbed the maximum amount of sweat.
After removing the moisture inside your gloves, disinfect them. You can sprinkle cider vinegar or white vinegar for example. Also, you can use tea tree essential oil and a little water to kill germs and fungi that may have grown in your boxing gloves.
For cleaning the outside of your gloves, spray a mixture of vinegar and water over the entire outer surface of the glove. Using a clean towel, wipe the entire outer surface of the glove to remove sweat and other dirt.
how to dry your clean boxing gloves
There are several ways to dry your boxing gloves. Here are a few that are developed for you.
Air drying
Drying gloves in the open air is very important. After cleaning the inside and outside of them, dry them in the open air. Open your gloves as much as possible after undoing the scratches. After attaching the strap, dry them near a fan or an open window.
Drying with newspaper
In addition to this drying method, you can dry your boxing gloves using a newspaper. So fill them with newspaper, so that it can absorb all the moisture in it.
Hair Dryer drying
Great way to quickly dry your boxing gloves, the hairdryer gets rid of the moisture inside your gloves. After setting your hairdryer to the coldest mode, immerse the nozzle of the latter inside your gloves.
Useful information for washing your boxing gloves
The sun is indeed a very good source of heat which will allow you to quickly dry your boxing glove. However, given that the boxing gloves are mostly made of leather, do not let them dry too long in the sun as this may damage them.
Put the boxing gloves on the surface or hang them on the wall hook to dry. Expand the glove holes as much as possible. This will ensure that oxygen enters inside to allow for natural drying.
Aim the deodorant nozzle at the glove and apply it inside and out. This type of product is available in sporting goods stores and helps keep gloves clean and fresh.
After each training session, put 1 cup of baking soda in each clean half. Place a sock on each boxing glove. Leave it for a few hours. Baking soda is an effective means of neutralizing unpleasant odors and maintaining freshness.
