Kinda forgot the caption I wanted to put here. I drew a really fun Holmes and then I drew a really fun Watson and then I put them together.
[ID: a digital drawing of Holmes and Watson sitting next to each other, Holmes is wrapped in a blue dressing gown and smoking a pipe, Watson is in his shirtsleeves, smoking a cigarette and writing something in a notebook resting on his knee. Holmes is leaning against him. /End ID]

In which way would each function explain something? E.g. which one is prone to use "life's" examples, "requisites", etc.?
Tumblr media
Meh. You can’t really define that by functions. Anyone can use examples. But…
Te: the facts. Maybe an example of how this is useful.
Ti: the meaning behind something.
Fe: uses “we” and points to other people’s similar views / experiences.
Fi: expresses how much this means to them.
Ne: uses broad metaphors to simplify it.
Ni: users more intense metaphors and argues for future implications.
Se: sticks to plain assessments and observable truths.
Si: relates it to personal experience or symbolism.

Part III: Expanding on the Functions
(Previous post: The Rundown on Cognitive Functions Following post: The 16 Personality Profiles)
We've now discussed what cognitive functions are, but I'm guessing it was pretty confusing. Well! Now we're going to do a rundown of every function in its placement in the stack, in layman's terms.
funkymbtifiction's Functions in all 4 placements Input Functions: Ne (extroverted intuition), Ni (introverted intuition), Se (extroverted sensation), Si (introverted sensation) Output Functions: Fe (extroverted feeling), Fi (introverted feeling), Te (extroverted thinking), Ti (introverted thinking)
funkymbtifiction has detailed descriptions of what functions in each placement may look like to the user themselves. I'd be a fool not to include theirs as well as my own in the following.
Another great description of each function in their places in the stack from u/dbo259 on reddit. This post gives descriptions of the inner monologue at every position.
I have also taken the liberty of collecting sensa-tion's descriptions on each function placement, from segments found reposted. Do give their blog a look as well.
Of the below, you'll likely relate to multiple. Note down the descriptions you relate to the most from each group, that encapsulate you as a person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Personal Example: I recognize myself the most in Ti and Se from dominant functions; Ti, Ne, and Se from auxiliary; Fe and Ni from tertiary, and Fe, Ni, and Si from inferior. Ti and Fe must pair in either Dominant and Inferior, or Auxiliary and Tertiary, and we have both of those. Se and Ni also must pair in the same way, and we have that. I have Ne in auxiliary, but Si in inferior, so we can disregard those two. This leaves us with Ti-Se-Ni-Fe or Se-Ti-Fe-Ni, which are ISTP and ESTP respectively. I then weigh the strengths of my functions (which can be pretty equal and therefore difficult to tell). This is where your social extraversion and introversion can weigh in, and that helps me determine I am an ISTP.
Note not everyone will be cookie-cutter clean as my example is. Mine is that way because I have knowledge of functions and thus, which strengths and weaknesses I possess.

How each type is a bad friend
INxJ:
First of all, if you’re friends with this person, you’re probably a nerd. Your friend’s dominant Ni means that they’d rather spend their time alone complimenting deep shit than going out and doing actual fun shit like spending time with people and being a relatively normal human being. You know who does that? People who lack a social life, that’s who. People who spend more time on Tumblr reblogging fandom gifs and roleplaying as fake people than taking a stroll outside or getting food in their system, that’s who. People who use “INxJ” as the main way to describe themselves even though most of the world doesn’t have an idea what an INTJ or INFJ is, that’s who. I’d tell you to steer clear of making friends with these people, but their introversion and lack of connection to the outside world is already doing it for me.
ISxJ:
What the fuck is a Si-dom? I don’t fuckin know. Si is such an invisible function, just like your friend is at social gatherings. If you wanna find an ISxJ at a party, just look near the walls, you’ll find one eventually. They’re the person who’s there but not doing anything notable. I’ll be honest, I don’t know anything about Si-doms and I’d be happy to sit down with some and get insight into what goes on in their heads.
ExFJ:
They care about you and aren’t afraid to show it. It’s flattering until it isn’t. It’s flattering until they message you literally every day and talk about their best experiences so many times that you can practically imagine yourself being there as, for the third time this week, they tell you about that one time they consoled a crying stranger at a party and left with them to get food together. It’s flattering until you deliberately avoid them in public so you don’t have to deal with them clinging on to you and asking about your personal business nonstop. “You know (mutual friend)? I think they hate me” “I think that barista at Starbucks is into me” “How’s it going with (SO or crush)?” are some things to expect from an ExFJ, which will be followed by you thinking something along the lines of SHUT THE FUCK UP AND MIND YOUR OWN DAMN BUSINESS
ExTJ:
What a great friend you’ve come across. They’re so loyal and really know how to hold a good conversation. You want to hang out with them, so you ask them if they’re available. Oh wait, they aren’t. Just like they were last week. And the week before that. And the week before that one. And most of the time you’ve had them as a friend. “Yo, wanna hang out tonight?” “Can’t, got work to do” or “I’m thinking about hitting up this bar tonight, wanna come?” “Sorry, already got plans with someone” or “How about we get lunch today?” “I have a meeting all lunch hour” are all exchanges you can expect to have with an ExTJ. So many things in their life they have to make time for and none of them are you. If text conversations and little face-to-face time satisfy you, then ExTJ is a perf friend for you.
xSTP:
You think you’ve found yourself a nice, sociable, and wholesome friend. They’re charismatic, warm, and can always make a mundane situation fun. Then they get sick of using Fe and go into full Ti mode. That’s when you discover just how much of a sociopath your friend probably is. “Here’s some circumstances in which (breaking a certain law or moral convention) is fine” and “Actually in my opinion, killing someone is justified if…” are some ways in which this can manifest. Don’t make friends with an xSTP unless you can handle jokes that would make an INFP mad and oh look, there they are hitting you up to go do parkour and light shit on fire at your local park. It’s almost midnight, don’t they have responsibilities or sleep to get to? Of course they need to sleep, they have to get to the gym in the morning so they can look good for their trashy Instagram selfies.
xSFP:
Oh. My. Gawsh. You think xSFP is so lovable. Their down-to-earthness and outgoing vibes trigger such positive reactions from you. But their Se is powerful. Watch them go out and get lit every weekend night without you. Watch them make friends with everyone at parties and post pics with their friends on their Snapchat story. If only you could be good enough to do that fun shit with xSFP. Of course you’ll make a nice joke that makes them laugh once in a while or help them out with some things, but if you’re not already best friend material with them, odds are you never will be, which is especially heartbreaking if you’re ESTP. Unless you’re xSFP yourself, then you may still have hope.
xNTP:
xNTP. Such a dynamic person. Has the active mind and the means to express it of an xNFP with the no-fucks-given attitude of an xSTP. But good luck getting a friendship with them to be strong and lasting if you don’t share anything in common. No, you don’t listen to their favourite progressive death metal corewave glitchhop bands or enjoy Tuvan throat singing or share their appreciation of obscure films, so what the fuck are you supposed to talk about together? Concrete reality? Normal people things? Go find someone with high Se if that interests you.
xNFP:
So you want to discuss an ethical issue without anyone taking anything too personally. Well too fuckin bad for you cause xNFP’s gonna take something personally sooner or later. They’ll give you that “seen 5:38 pm” and be very obviously disinterested in your conversations after that before removing you from their list of people they like being around and never talking to you in a friendly context ever again. And Jebus help you if you’re not into their main interests cause the second they meet someone who shares said interests, you’re getting fuckin replaced no matter how emotionally invested you’re in xNFP. You aren’t a fan of Arctic Monkeys? Too fuckin bad for you cause xNFP has at least 3 other friends who are and they like those friends a lot more than you. I hope you like feeling worthless cause that’s what happens when xNFP likes you but just as an acquaintance or just straight up doesn’t like you at all.

Part V: Further Research and Resources
(Previous Post: 16 personality profiles and type families.)
It would be foolish of me to write this entire guide without crediting and linking the various resources I've used throughout. Please take the time to read their analyses as well, as I am not the end-all information expert on typology. All perspectives are important to a full understanding.
Tumblr Blogs:
mbti-notes and their wonderful rundown on functions
funkymbtifiction and their masterpost of everything typology
sensa-tion and... well, their whole blog really
External Blogs/Sites:
Michael Caloz's type growth coaching and functions test
Personality Junkie's function stack explained and type profiles
David Keirsey's four type families and his books, Please Understand Me and Please Understand Me II.
Tests With Good Credibility (Because sometimes reading is not enough and we want others to tell us what type we are. Need for external confirmation/validation, especially one seemingly unbiased towards us, is innate to humans.)
Mistype Investigator - developed by MBTI enthusiasts whose goal is to create an unbiased and straightforward test.
Michael Caloz - really, I just enjoy that it takes into account both function and letter systems, as well as type families. Well rounded.
Similar Minds - combination Jung type test and Enneagram.
TypeMatch - Perceiving (Input) functions - tests between Ne-Si/Si-Ne or Se-Ni/Ni-Se axes, and suggests whether you lean intuitive or sensing.
TypeMatch - Judging (output) functions - tests between Te-Fi/Fi-Te or Fe-Ti/Ti-Fe axes.

Part IV: Putting it together: the 16 profiles
(Previous post: Functions in Place: What they look like. Following post: Further Research & Credits)
Now that you've (presumably) read Part III and been thoroughly confused, we put it all together and hope it makes sense.
In this post I will give you a short profile of all 16 types, each with a look at the strengths and weaknesses influenced by functions that comprise the personality type.
The 4 Type Families
NT: INTJ, ENTJ, INTP, ENTP. This group is characterized as Strategic, and sees themselves as Ingenious, Autonomous, and Resolute. They are driven by the need to make sure that what is said or done makes logical sense. Their skills are strongest in Strategy, followed by Diplomacy, Tactics, and then Logistics. NF: INFJ, ENFJ, INFP, ENFP. This group is characterized as Diplomatic, and sees themselves as Empathetic, Benevolent, and Authentic. They are driven by the need to find meaning and purpose in life. Their skills are strongest in Diplomacy, followed by Strategy, Logistics, and then Tactics. SJ: ISTJ, ESTJ, ISFJ, ESFJ. This group is characterized as Logistical, and sees themselves as Dependable, Beneficial, and Respectable. They are driven by the need to be useful to the social groups they belong to. Their skills are strongest in Logistics, followed by Tactics, Diplomacy, and then Strategy. SP: ISTP, ESTP, ISFP, ESFP. This group is characterized as Tactical, and sees themselves as Artistic, Action-oriented, and Adaptable. They are driven by the need for freedom to respond or create in the moment. Their skills are strongest in Tactics, followed by Logistics, Strategy, and then Diplomacy.
Why are they grouped like that? Why not, say, NJ and NP or ST and SF for consistency? Or entirely different groupings? Glad you asked! Myers initially proposed the separations of NT, NF, ST, and SF. However, many people had difficulty forming connections between the last two categories -- they simply didn't seem to share much in common in way of motivations. Later, it was observed that the SJ "Guardian" and SP "Artisan" types shared much more in common, resulting in SJ and SP. Other theories have postulated that the best groupings are ET, IT, EF, and IF. Others disregard both the letter groupings and functions groupings altogether. Here, I decided upon the most commonly used groups to maintain commonly understood type families, and I'm not interested in creating my own system. In reality, many different grouping can be used and similarities be drawn between each grouping. As well, many people will feel they fit under multiple types. This is natural, as human conscious and skillsets are on spectrums, not perfect boxes.

The Solar and Lunar Tincture
A self-indulgent analysis of the lunisolar model of categorizing human traits, and how Yeats distilled an early personality model.
In W.B. Yeats' A Vision, he examines the Solar or Primary Tincture and the Lunar or Antithetical Tincture as pulled from readings in alchemy.
"The tinctures are fundamental to Yeats’s System and underlie its inherent dualism[...] there are two primary ways of knowing reality... [the solar being] rational deductive, argumentative, intellectual thinking that is the hallmark of science. ...the other way of knowing [was] lunar consciousness. ...non-linear, image-driven intuitive way of thinking that is an accepted tool of the arts and religion." [Tinctures]
In essence, the dichotomy presented was representative of dualism in human nature, that is, every particular way of operating and understanding fell within a this-or-that.
The Solar is representative of "concord, objectivity, space, reason, morality, and masculinity". In contrast, the Lunar is "discord, subjectivity, time, emotion, aesthetics, femininity". Sol is gold, morning/day, strength and courage; Lune is silver, evening/night, intuition and sensitivity.
The associations between these and modern personality models are incredibly clear cut. In the MBTI model; ESTJ (letter typing) is heralded by the Solar Tincture, and INFP (letter typing) is honoured by the Lunar Tincture. In the SLOAN/Big 5 model, SCOEN is Solar's archetype, and RLUAI is Lunar's archetype.
Here's where it gets interesting, however. Cognitive functions are inherently based on whether they are objective or subjective, whether internally or externally oriented. That is how nobody falls into one or the other (Solar or Lunar) in a cookie-cutter fashion. All extroverted functions (Fe, Ne, Se, Te) are objective and focused externally; all introverted functions (Fi, Ni, Si, Ti) are subjective and focused internally.
Every personality type possesses two subjective functions and two objective functions in the primary stack (and of course, we have the capability to wield all 8 functions). This is how Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queen creates characters that possess both Solar and Lunar traits, even if they are meant to be archetypal representations of Sol man, Lune woman; good and evil, logic and feeling. The characters possess weaknesses and strengths that are counter to their gender representations, a further indication of the natural, yinyang-like balance of Sol and Lune within humans.
In a brief conclusion, this study of Solar and Lunar tincture indicates a deeper understanding of personality types long before Myers Briggs or any other psychologist or theorist formed notions of the distinctions of personality type. And that very thing is the key to this blog: a study of the dichotomies that exist in every iteration of humanity, and the symmetries and similarities drawn between every thought we have ever formed as a collective.

How would you describe an ESTP sx/sp 8w7 (if you know the Enneagram).
I'm interested in discussing the enneagram, trifixes, and instincts at a later date for sure.
Let's break this down:
ESTP - Se Ti Fe Ni Frequently mischaracterized as adrenaline junkie finance bro, which may be true in some cases but rare ones. ESTPs are attracted to the sensory for sure, but it's their element, not just their whim. ESTPs are grounded, able to form workable solutions to problems just as quickly as they arise. The Se-Ti axis creates a connectedness to the tangible environment and a layer of sorting and compartmentalizing on top of it. Contrary to letter type belief, ESTPs are more emotionally intelligent than they let on - tertiary Fe, after all. They know how to influence other people's perceptions, and may be known for having a charismatic air to them that people find respectable, attractive, or intriguing. The biggest struggle for an ESTP would be in regards to future planning. For sure, they may create general ideas of what they want to do based on their current interests, but a serious conversation regarding where they're headed or making statements regarding exact plans for a path forward will be stressful to them. The Ni-Fe axis may at times of stress make the ESTP feel cornered, paranoid of what others think of them, and may start to draw connections between events and behaviors that don't exist. In retaliation against this, ESTPs might attempt to solve problems that don't exist or indulge in risky behaviours to counteract their perceived faults and fears.
sx/sp 8w7 sexual (or one to one) 8s tend to have a rebellious streak, moreso than their social or self preservation counterparts. They are highly aware of social hierarchy and power distance, and will often like to feel above others in conversation and in situations. This isn't necessarily a bad trait, but certainly something to be worked on. 8s may have a small group of people they feel the most secure around, and will tend to withdraw out of discomfort if the circle gets too large or becomes less trustworthy. The wing 7 gives way to a more energetic and personable individual than the conflicted 8w9, and will often thrive off of the adventures than stimulate both the 7 and Se. Of the gut triad, the 8 is sometimes the most susceptible to emotional outbursts, but is tempered by a mellower, predominantly happy 7 wing. The self-preservation secondary instinct provides motive for the sexual/one to one instinct. They seek to form relationships with others that give them an advantage, motivated by needed to protect themselves and their resources. This type might even be susceptible to the notion that life is a zero-sum game: "if they succeed, I've lost something; if I succeed, they have failed." This is strategic in some areas of life but can interfere in cooperation with others and understanding that multiple people can benefit without detriment to someone else.
Taken together, the ESTP sx/sp 8w7 is an assertive and charming personality, one that likely has some level of natural charisma and social skills that gives to their abilities in any field - be it business, athletics, finance, or even medical studies (I actually have an ESTP so/sx 873 friend who's currently a med student). They may be quite playful and interested in working with teams, though less for social harmony and more for furthering their goals and aspirations. They are honest with those they value, will take charge and lead teams with ease, and have a keen interest in being at the top of the pyramid, whether work-wise or personal needs-wise, to feel grounded and secure.
