2025-05-17 "art"
i don't know where i was going with this, but it sounds like i ripped off early How to Destroy Angels. mostly just testing how much the fake kick drum acts like a real one
i did discover that changing the pitch of either of the oscillators of the kick drum just transform it into different 80s sounding drum machines.
i may have to see what i can get out of automating each step of a pattern
more experimenting is necessary
accidentally created the perfect kick drum sound when trying to just make an annoying noise

2025-04-26 "moove"
half guitar/bass tone test, half aimless repetitive guitar riffing
the tone test part is sending both guitar tracks to four separate instances of amplitube (each) to mix together the four main amp sounds i like (orange, jazz chorus, vox ac, and twin reverb)
in this case i panned all of them arbitrarily along the stereo field to even it all out. two amp sims of each guitar track per side, none of them 100%
the bass is just me combining two bass amp presets into one and fine-tuning it a bit
i'm beginning to think i should just lean heavily into repetitive music at this point considering it's what i default to
drums are a drum vst with the kick and snare doubled with some samples of a Boss DR-550

2025-04-17 "neck probs"
recorded a guitar riff i had written back in 2016, then manually chopped it up like i used to do when i was making all my music in acid music studio.
i wanted to test out sending kick drums and 808's as sidechains to its compressor and only liked it when i had just the kicks. i may have set the threshold too low
also tried out the round robin setting on studio one's sampler to get a bit less of a repetitive sound out of the drums. i wish i could just drag and drop multiple samples on it but i've only tried to do it one by one so far and that just replaces the one on each pad
someday i will find a guitar neck that doesn't cause me problems

2025-04-06 "amb"
two songs in one day. wow. both over 5 minutes, too.
thought about trying to build a guitar riff out of a few smaller, looped pieces and didn't quite get to what i was thinking of, but just kinda let it become it's own thing at some point
the second part was built just to try rearranging the guitar loops for a different feel
it ended up being equally influenced by El Ten Eleven and Battles by the time i finished with it

2025-04-06 "relax"
back to making dark, minimal, beat-focused stuff.
hoping i can get a hold of a midi keyboard or something soon so i can make this stuff in a way other than drawing in a couple notes and looping it

#i like the whole arrangement but i want to recreate the tones#particularly the drums which are all just one sample per drum kit piece#the guitars are also muffled because i'm getting a lot of noise from the air conditioners somewhere around 2-3khz#so there's a lot of high end missing

#i think a beatstep pro and a keyboard would do wonders for my composition attempts#maybe a different pad controller as well since my launchpad doesn't want to cooperate with studio one

2025-03-01 "disintegration test"
listened to about a half hour of William Basinski's The Disintegration Loops and wanted to try something similar with amplitube's delay effects, basing the looping off of Venus Theory's youtube short on microlooping using a delay
i set the feedback option to near max, recorded a short guitar phrase, then wanted to let the delay play out.
and then it crashed. which is why it suddenly cuts out
i also put the wow & flutter option to max to get the most "disintegration" out of it. the specific delay module was the fender tape echo

a test of an electro-harmonix pitch fork plus i bought around the end of 2023 but haven't gotten around to using much
setting it to play and octave above, and an octave plus a fifth up so i can do power chords at the same time i play a bassline is the main reason i bought it
this is the first time i tried to record it though and i'm surprised it turned out as good as it did, my bad playing notwithstanding
gonna try pairing it with a couple different pedals i have that can generate tones on their own and see how it goes
the song is electric cucumber by zilch

2025-02-26 "intro"
watched a youtube video where a guy had a two second intro sound for his videos and that somehow inspired me to make this thing which sounds nothing like it
i've been getting really into drinking artificially-hibiscus-flavored aguas frescas found at the grocery store near me, which is also irrelevant but probably informed this somehow
there's a pretty good chance the local burrito place in town is also going to shut down if all the branches north of here closing down is any indication
there are a lot of disjointed thought in my head. i've been doing well financially but not mentally 👍

version without fake guitar, but with real guitar
just to complete the trifecta
2025-02-22 "Heavy Fake"
doing a bit of a test layering a couple of real guitars with a fake guitar sound i made following a couple comments in this reddit thread
i think it sounds better on the bass

here's the version with just the fake guitar for comparison
i'm not sure exactly how much it adds or takes away
