京都市左京区浄土寺にあるプライベートギャラリーのためのカウンターをデザイン / 制作した。

ギャラリーはかつてこの土地にあった豆腐屋を改修して作られており、室内のモルタル床中央には石板が据えられている。また開口は茶色のアルミサッシ、壁面は白く塗られ、過去の用途に紐づく履歴が幾重にも重なる空間であった。

こうした重層的な履歴に反応し、構造にステンレス、水平面に木の水性塗装、垂直面に半透明のアクリルと、三種の材を用いてバランスをとった。外部から見たときには、間口を五分割している 引き戸の縦桟に隠れつつ、オーナーの作業空間と芳名スペースを両立する、一枚の半透明の膜が自立し、両者を柔らかく受容し、邂逅させる。

構造体には壁付け用のチャンネルサポートを使用し、今後の展示の展開に合わせて柔軟に高さと形状を変更できるよう、解体再構築可能な構造とした。

また、展示開催時にはオーナーの作業側として想定されている内側を、展示室側に向けることで、用途を反転することも可能な設計としている。

（誰にか迎えられたかと思えば、迎える側に立っている。これまさに主題の「対」[contra] の意味するところ。）

Kyoto City, — December 2024

A counter was designed and fabricated for a private gallery located in Jōdoji, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto.

The gallery was created through the renovation of a former tofu shop that once stood on this site. At the center of the interior’s mortar floor lies a stone slab, while the openings feature brown aluminum sashes and the walls are painted white—resulting in a space layered with the traces and memories of its past functions.

In response to this multilayered history, the counter balances three materials: stainless steel for the structure, wood with a water-based finish for the horizontal surfaces, and translucent acrylic for the vertical surfaces. Viewed from outside, a single translucent plane stands independently, concealed behind the vertical muntins of the five-part sliding door, accommodating both the owner's workspace and a space for visitors to leave their names. This membrane gently receives and connects both sides.

The structure employs wall-mounted channel supports, allowing the height and form to be flexibly adapted to future exhibitions. It is also designed to be disassembled and reassembled.

Moreover, the inside —intended for the owner’s use during exhibitions— can be reversed to face the exhibition space, enabling a shift in function depending on the occasion. This means the title of this counter, as "contra".

"The moment I feel received by someone, I am already the one receiving — a spatial embodiment of such "contra"diction."

Workers earnestly living their daily lives momentarily deceive their hearts, hiding themselves away in heaven.

There stood the figure of a capitalist who appeared angelic, yet filled with fury.

In a world just slightly beyond the establishment of human classes, they desperately live day by day, chasing the lingering scent of opportunities from an era already surpassed. And perhaps, even now, so do we.

We have merely increased the things we cannot do, whereas our former barbarity brought us closer to our true nature as living beings. 

Why is it, even now, that we still perceive the essence of things in this work? 切実に日々を生きる労働者が、つかの間心を偽ることで天国に身を隠す。

そしてそこにいたのもまた天使に見えた資本家の怒りに満ちた姿だった。

人の階級が定まるほんのすこし後の世界で、もうすでに踏み越えられた時代のチャンスの残り香を巡って彼らは懸命に日々を生きる。そして未だ、私たちもそうかもしれない。

できないことが増えただけで、野蛮さを残したかつての方が生き物としての本質に近かった。

なぜ私たちは今もなお、この作品にものの本質を見てとるのだろう。
