[Its strange how much of London leaks in through an open window.]
[Ambient chatter, shouts and whispers, creaking doors and wheels and hooves and boots and heels on cobblestone. A barking lurcher, a yowling cat.]
[The smell of smoke and coal and spores and that damp hollow air that reeks in when you look up at the roof of the cave for too long. How much lingers in the space between the sill and the pane, ready to spill into your space when the latch comes up and the hinges swing?]
[Its easy to forget it really is just a window, and not a doorway.]
[Thankfully, yours is still shut tight.]
we should all post our favorite lines from our wips/stories .

"A train black as pitch- save the blazing red sigils- screeches across the sky. Heavy with contraband, Captain Casey arrives precisely on time- according to their watch anyway."
I finally solidified a design for my sunless skies captain! Though Casey got its start on a different railway of old London...

a little writing exercise I did because I am unwell about Jules and the Black Ribbon Society, who she didn’t even try to fool when she faked her death (mild spoilers ahead for the black ribbon storylet)
Duel the Adventuring Aesthete
It is the most flowery request you’ve made for the society yet, but you know they are appreciative of the arts. ‘You’re certain?’ She coolly asks, but ultimately accepts.
Duel Her, the Adventuring Aesthete
It’s rumored that the Adventuring Aesthete joined the society under a different name. Her life in America has made her an expert in hunting and violence, even if she is a bit of a reluctant killer. She carries a gifted Infernal Sharpshooter’s Rifle across her back, but you’ve been warned that to the Aesthete, anything is a weapon.
A Friendly Duel with the Aesthete
You suspect that the Adventuring Aesthete prefers these duels, but don’t underestimate her; just because it’s nonlethal doesn’t mean she entirely restrains herself. She still keeps her rifle on her back. You choose an unused expedition site in the Forgotten Quarter.
SUCCESS:
The Adventuring Aesthete is a formidable opponent, and frequently picks off pieces of monuments with their rifle nearby to let you know they are carefully watching you. The hardest part is finding them- everytime you turn, they are gone. However, once they reveal themself, you distract them by talking of a duel to the death. Her eyes narrow.
Their footwork is faster, but you finally get an opening, and they fall to the ground. Feducci throws you your Rostygold, but you get the distinct feeling that you’ve been placated on purpose.
FAILURE:
The Adventuring Aesthete is dreadfully skilled. They stop entertaining you after only a few minutes, and get a shot in at your left knee. You put up a firefight of your own, but d__n it, you can’t find them! The last thing you see, lying on the ground, is Feducci tossing them a purse of Rostygold.
A Duel to the Death with the Aesthete
The Aesthete nods, and there’s a dangerous edge to their look you didn’t quite notice before. “Only if you’re sure.” You get a sudden, odd feeling that there’s only one way out of the Black Ribbon Society.
FAILURE:
You knew to be wary, but had hoped the Adventuring Aesthete’s reluctance would work to your advantage. You choose the Flit, where you plan to take away any sniping advantage she might have on even ground. The trick is finding them. You received an offer before the duel, offering you an impossible way out of the Black Ribbon Society. You rejected it, telling the Adventuring Aesthete you would inform Feducci of this treachery if they did not agree to duel the next day.
They find you, first. You feel a sharp pain in your back, but the Aesthete makes you face them as you desperately fight through the pain. They disarm you, and take your weapon for themselves. Eventually, they raise your own dagger against you, and the last thing you hear is clapping from the Tomb-Colonist. Perhaps you should have taken that offer…

Ellie hadn’t intended to take over the pub in Port Cecil. The entire trip wasn’t strictly planned—brought on by a tip about a promising lead for expanding her business. Inheriting the pub happened entirely by accident. One conversation led to another and before she was aware of what had even happened she was behind the bar, refurbishing the place and serving patrons.
She took to it shockingly quickly, falling into the steady rhythm of the Principles. And as the days would go by, more and more miners found their way into the establishment. It took her a while to realise what she was feeling—that tugging sense of familiarity from lives lived before, childhood memories nearly lost to time. The steady stream of workers would file in, tell oh-so-familiar stories of hardship and woe while the refinery looms in the distance, Iron & Misery’s maw. Across the street, chess players move scintillack pieces across the board.
Something stirs within her. History repeating itself. She tells herself she’ll leave for London. There’s nothing she can do about the operation, about the company’s hold on the island. She can go back to London, to the life she’s built for herself. Yet even as she sets zail she knows she’s lying. The pub is in trusted hands, waiting for her return, and when it comes it will be with a plan.

having an account focused on reducing people's Nightmares WEIRDLY sustainable. the Maniac's Prayers you get are more than enough to buy laudanum and tinctures of vigor to basically keep doing this indefinitely
