And if Bones didn’t mess it up, I’m gonna be like “Ladies and Gentlemen and Overhoe fans, I present to you the new and improved anime Kai Chisaki with a much better hairline. Look at him, you can’t say he’s ugly anymore can you? That’s right. He grew out his hair while he’s in Tartarus so he’s not balding like you guys said. I love the trash trio, but I’m a bit disappointed that Setsuno’s the only one to receive attention from the fandom the Eight Precepts niche, so here’s my opinion on Hojo, who’s more central to their group than people care to notice.

First, Hojo’s first name 結 (Yuu) means “tie, join”, which is really fitting when you consider that he’s the one who seems to bind their group together. The best example of this role that comes to mind is when he re-uses Setsuno’s self-deprecating talk to describe their group (”Like trash, we’ve got hardened bonds that tie us together”). Despite the vocabulary, it’s a more positive side of them he points out to Tamaki: their human connection, that makes them more than simple villains to defeat.

This aspect is then developed when Hojo exposes the individual ways they were mistreated — this is how they got there, this is why they have to do what they’re doing now — but it’s more for Tabe and Setsuno that he’s looking for an understanding. He doesn’t justify what happened to them, rather, through the terms he uses (discarded, backstabbed, had to, wasn’t allowed to) he emphasizes the lack of choice Tabe and Setsuno faced: by depicting them as victims, he incites compassion for them.

As for Hojo, though he portrays himself as a victim too, he gives a reason for what happened to him: his gems were “worthless fakes”, and since his worth was based on his quirk, it extended to his whole being — he was useless, so he was thrown out after being almost beaten to death. It looks like he still carries this opinion: his worth is closely tied to his usefulness — to Overhole, sure, but mostly to their group. He only talks about “them”, their trio takes more importance than his individuality. Their co-dependency is strongly hinted at, but I think it goes even deeper for Hojo. He cares for Tabe and Setsuno and, unfortunately, that’s what brings their downfall.

Hojo didn’t realize that, in his desire for his teammates to be understood, he was giving Tamaki the keys to defeat them.

Maybe Tamaki could have come up with another strategy, but at this point he was already badly injured and tired from the fight, who knows if he’d have hold on much longer. The fact is that without Hojo, he wouldn’t have thought of using their friendship against them. (In the anime, Hojo even gave Tamaki confirmation of this: when the latter hurt Setsuno, he snapped and shouted at him to die. Season 4 did only one (1) episode right but damn it was good.)

Though Setsuno is in charge of disarming their opponents, it’s Hojo who really acts as their shield with his crystals; it hurts to think that, in a way, they got hurt because of him.

Anyway, please appreciate Yuu Hojo.
