Advice for Freelance Photographers
Nowadays, I've seen too many photographers struggle to find business in this field and lead themselves down a path that will inevitably end their journey in photography quickly. As a freelance photographer of almost three years myself, I have gained a lot of experience in how to earn multi five-figures while doing what I love AND as a full time college student.
Firstly, I would advise new freelance photographers to focus on their passion and their craft rather than focus on earning money so early on. I've heard up and coming photographers mention how they are "just trying to get some quick money" but then complain when they have no one interested in hiring them. If these photographers were to slow down, do some cheap/free work, and just build their exposure and enhance their skill, then the clients would come to them much easier and much more frequently.
There are many who also are not willing to invest in themselves or be patient. Photographers don't want to spend money on expensive gear, when sometimes this gear can really determine how much you are hired. You have to be willing to spend a few thousand if you want to make tens of thousands.
Here is a website discussing tips for freelance photographers, as the first pieces of advice are to sharpen your skills and to acquire proper equipment.
With the first two steps mentioned being my primary pieces of advice, it seems to be clear what the foundation of freelance photography is. However, some just haven't seem to picked it up yet.
Money aside, I think passion is really want has led me to prosper in this field. Even when money hasn't been as plentiful as I hoped for, I still reminded myself that at least I'm doing something I love and enjoy. This passionate mindset has not only led me to never even consider quitting, but it has made me push myself to be better and better every single day, leading me to get hired by more clients.
So, to all the up and coming photographers out there, just practice and improve your craft before getting caught up in not making enough money. The money will come eventually if you do the right things.
