This kinda became, longer than i intended so I'm not doing it via anon messages.

I'm not surprised you didn't find anything about St. Gregorjevo. Because it's Sveti Gregor. (If you google it, you are most likelly to find settlements named after the saint.) The "jevo" is like "'s" so calling it Gregorjevo is like calling it George's.

Citing sources will be, difficult since they are all in slovene and I do not recall any translations in english? For example there is "Praznično leto Slovencev" by Niko Kuret  you could search for "The Festive year of Slovenes" as a potential english title for it, which covers all folk traditions that take place in slovenia, their origins and meaning.

It HAS been a very long time since I read it(i should really buy it at some point) and I don't recall the other books I was reading at a similar time.

Also I wish to preface this that I am not writing to you with any ill intent. I myself had a catholic upbringing, but after my confirmation it seemed like the world did not want me to attend sunday mass and the extra faith classes we had in the year after our conformation. My current religious stance is ???. I'm not pagan, even if i wished to be pagan, the religion of my ancestors is..., unlike ancient greek, roman or norse religions, there's no concrete facts about it, only religious items, traditions and practices. I believe in a higher force/power/being, but I do not have the confidence to put a name to it, as I am a mere human, and I am weak and uncertain. I do have an interest in theology, it is the one big thing that stayed with me from faith class. And at the minimum I have to be educated in it if I wish to have a good understanding of art history, as many great arts WERE made as commissions by the catholic church, or pious rich folk (nobles, merchants etc.)

And above all, I have read your blog. And you seem like a really likable person. You feel good natured and I honestly wish you happiness and that you will be joyful once you enter the cloister and are able to be closer to God and your worship of him. <3

Now to talk more about Gregorjevo, It is mostly associated with him thanks to, well,  it taking place on his name day.

I am not sure if name days  are still an important thing in America? Or if they ever were... Funfact, in Slovenia birthdays didn't used to be celebrated on your, day of birth, but on your name day. The tradition still presists, by people wishing you well when its your name day.

Back to Gregorjevo, since saint names tend to be slovenized in slovene. It's probably named after Saint Gregory the Great. I think. St. George is usually slovenized as Sveti Jurij. (More on St. George later)

On Gregorjevo there are quite a few, traditions to be done so to say.  But they arent done all over slovenia, because again it's folk traditions, small things. One such thing is letting candles float down rivers. Iirc, from slavic paganism, it is the start of spring and a ritual to the gods sending wishes for the new year.  (Another spring related tradition is pust, but its more of a pre-spring, scare away winter type of thing)

How is that connected to St. George the Great? Ummm. Theres a legend that he came to his parents in a glowing boat.

No literally. Thats what the priests say. Its a story I recall being said whenever it was the saints name day in morning mass. I can't find, anything, that implies that that happened to the real St. Gregory, maybe it happened to some other saint Gregor and its just a mix up because of the same name? The candles that go down rivers in some areas are inside small church building boats, again to paint it christian.

Then there is Jurjevanje that happens on Jurjevo. Jurjevo again takes place on spring. St. Georges day. It's an important day, especially for herders  since snakes arounf this time are supposed to wake up and come out from the underground. St. George who is known to have killed a dragon, was then believed to come out again on this day to kill the snakes. (dragon/snakes, etymologically the same thing in slavic languages, or atleast the same root word, zmaj, dragon, zmija, snake). So whats Jurjevanje? Its when a young boy dresses up as Zeleni Jurij (Green George), all dressed in green  he would then go around the village to stick saplings or the like at doors, to bring good luck, to ward off the snakes. Zeleni Jurij is supposed to be an aspect of Svet Jurij. Kind of how Marija zavetnica (s plaščem) (Mary the protector (with a cape)), is an aspect of Mary, specifically the part of her that protects worshipers. Depicted usually with a cape that she opens up and covers ovef the worshipers. But its also very likely that Zeleni Jurij is, Yarilo, (I should have mentioned that j is pronounced like y earlier than this) a slavic god of spring time, especially since he doesn't show up anywhere else.

It is really just local traditions that get this overpaint of Christianity, and since they are so local and small, and rural people aren't that important, there's not really much talk about them outside of their regions.  If you ask any grandma who regularly goes to church, she will call them christian. And so will the priests, they won't call them traditions that are practiced everywhere.  Its like how coloured eggs are prepared differently for Easter in different regions, they are all Christian but a different local tradition. Scholars on the other hand will figure out and look where something might have come from, why do these people do these things, and others do not.

This is getting kind of long and I'm sorry about that. But this topic has really sparked up my curiosity and I will need to do some research again. I also wrote this fully on my train ride home, so I couldn't really double check anything and had to rely on my memory. So I also apologise if there are any grammatical mistakes or if I on accident do not make sense.

Hopefully our villages priest might have some time this weekend, because now I wish to ask him about some of these things. If he doesn't then I will have to remember to ask him on Easter since he always managed to visit my Godfather then.

Social anxiety C C C COMBO BREAKERRRRR

I had a real good day yo!!

I was in a really stupid emotional state at 4am this morning cos of a dumb nightmare about my abusive mum that i havent seen in 15 years. But at least because of it it prompted me to try and find the address of my childhood home again, and i successfully did and i had a huge nostalgia wave just looking at google street view. I dont know if i'll ever be brave enoughto actually visit there and walk down the same road again with my new and taller legs, but just knowing that its not impossible makes me feel a lot better.

But then srsly i was in real big panic attack shakes and i couldbt get back to sleep and i had a pounding headache and my eyes hurt and then when i finally passed out i kept waking up like half an hour later and having to go thru all the hell of getting asleep again. And then when i woke up at 5pm having wasted the whole day i realized my electricity was out and i needed to walk the 1.5km to the shop where i can pay the bills and AAAAGH giant headache and on the verge of tears and its the middle of a heatwave and my hair dye is all faded bad and so many damn excuses. And 'oh well itll take like 20 minutes to get ready and then what if i walk too slow and the shop is closed'. All the stupid reasons i use to excuse my social anxiety!

BUT IM REALLY PROUD THAT I STILL DID IT

I'm not just giving myself the 1.5 on my kilometres count, im definately getting two points for 'survived anxious social situation with style and grace'!

Cos seriousky cos of the heatwave i wouldnt be able to wear heavy baggy coat yo cover myself up, so i went out in a short sleeved shirt with my binder and i was really inpressed with how good i looked in the mirror. Yknow even tho my face was like sleep deprived mega anxious death hell! XD but yeahi managed to accomplish the Basic Things Of Daily Life despite being in my worst anxious state for ages, and i did it in sweltering weather and while unconfident in my ability to pass. I actually ended up having a swing in my step on the way back and enjoyed a completely un anxious walk for once! I just saw myself in the mirror in the supermarket bathroom and was like 'holy shit i look perfectly fine, what was i worried about?' And then i didnt completely fall apart due to the now new worry that if i was actually successfully passing then maybe i'd get kicked out for using the bathroom of my birth sex. It was a slow shopping day so nobody else came in there, it was fine. And i mean i'd still feel equally as anxious using the other bathroom, there arent any unisex toilets for nonbinary folk :(

But yeah i handled it really well!! Its such a small anxiety to other people tho and i still feel ashamed that i cant completely shed my peoplephobia all at once. But this was a really big step up that metaphorical staircase!

Oh and while i was there i actually felt confident enough to Actually Do Some Damn Shopping! I didnt just limit it to a basic run and gun, get in there, get the one thing and leave thing. I very often do that!! Sometimes it takes me two trips to the shops to get everything cos i got so anxious i just ran home after the first thing XD But today i actually wandered around the whole supermarket and checked if there was anything on sale or anything i forgot to put on my shopping list. Again, very basic thing that normal people do every day, but for me i usually get irrationally panicked so this was a disproportionately big accomplishment!

I BOUGHT A SHOES

I havent bought a new pair of shoes since like.. 4 years? 5 maybe? I cant recall if it was before i moved here or just after. I have a stupid habit of only owning one thing and only replacing it when its broken, because like.. Leftover instincts from being poorer. And its stupid cos im perfectly able to splurge on electronics or pokemon merchandise or whatever when i have spare money, yet when it comes to actual life necessities im like 'nah what a waste'. I guess its cos avoiding paying for them was a common experience during those homeless times, whereas splurging on self birthday gifts was not a thing i could ever do at all. Possibly this is the same reason i get easily suckered in by scratchcards and lootboxes, its easy to not notice how much i'm wasting when its not something i have a long experience with. Plus they kinda cheat by making each singular pull be cheap and then encouraging you to keep gambling fifty more times. But its only 2 bucks each time~fuckin hell im dumb to fall for that shit.

ANYWAY thats why ive been using the same shitty pair of trainers for like five years. Theyre really durable but theyre not exactly comfy or very good looking. Theyre like this neon green and yellow and black tron lines abomination that i DO KINDA LOVE but ive gotta admit that it doesnt fit with many outfits. I literally dont own a single other yellow anything.

So yeah i bought three pairs of shoes on sale for 15 pound in total HOLY SHIT thats a good dealio! I got some plimsolls/daps/im not actually sure what they call them in other countries sorry. Its like the fabric shoe but it has a good grip runner's sole to it? Always used to wear them in gym class at school, i liked them beter than trainers cos the sole wasnt as thick and inflexible. I mean im already clumsy without like 3cm more height on me! And then i got some sort of loafer thing thats similar but more The Comfort. And then i also got some super soft indoor slippers! So now i actyalky have shoes for differebt occasions!! Jogging walking and laying around being a couch potato! Not just wearing these big chunky trainers for all of that! I mean lol it used to be even worse, once my Only Shoes were actualky these huge mountain climbing boots XD i got them free from the homeless shelter and kept them for years after i left, even tho they were too tight and always cut up the back of my ankles. Ah, memories of past trauma! Why am i stirring up so many of these today!!

So anyway yeah thats my Very Boring Normal Day that for once i managed to handle like a normal human being. I'm proud!

Oh and i also got a glitter cowboy hat and i dont know why they were selling a glitter cowboy hat but it was the only sort of sun hat they had so i went with it. It kinda helps with dysphoria somehow?? Like i know people will criticize that part of my fashion first before they notice how ugly the rest of me is XD and its hard to be sad when you're thinking 'beep boop gender cowboy'

The Buena Vista mobile home park in Palo Alto is a close-knit community. But can they withstand the march of developers who want to build plains for tech laborers?

Its not a big manor, Amanda Serrano answers of her ageing off-white trailer in patch 59 of the Buena Vista mobile home park in Silicon Valley. But I feel happy here. Its my own trailer.

Serrano, a 48 -year-old care assistant, reads the common in Palo Alto is the first place shes lived where she experiences comfortable living openly as a transgender wife, in connections with her lover Arturo Saucedo.

But life is about to become uncomfortable for Amanda, Arturo and 400 other low-income, primarily non-native-English-speaking local residents who summon Buena Vista home. They are facing expulsion from the 4.5 -acre plot, so its owners can sell it for development into luxury accommodations for young tech workers.

Its prime location on El Camino Real at the very heart of Silicon Valley, precisely miles from the headquarters of Facebook and Google, makes it could be worth as much as $55 m( APS3 6m ). But if the sale goes ahead, Amanda, Arturo and the rest of the community will be forced to leave not just Buena Vista but, for numerous, Palo Alto, or even the US.

The influx of young tech developers with large-hearted purses has sent hires across Silicon Valley into the stratosphere. The median monthly hire for a one-bedroom apartment in Palo Alto is $2,600( APS1, 725 ), the increased number of more than $1,000( APS6 63) over the past five years. Amanda, who earns just over the minimum wage helping local, elderly people in their homes, knows that she and Arturo, who works as a housekeeper in a neighbourhood inn, wont is to find anywhere they can yield nearby. Across the street from Buena Vista, a 700 sq ft one-bed accommodation in a new development is being marketed for $2,895 a few months. While some of the other mobile homes are patched up with membrane metal and corrugated cast-iron, Saul and Erikas trailer is double-glazed and covered a colour they announce firecracker red.( I know it appears pink, but its not, Bracamontes tells .)

Escalante, the president of the Buena Vista Residents Association and programme coordinator at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, has lived in Buena Vista since she was 11, when her father Rene, a retired construction worker, moved into the common so he had been able to transmit “their childrens” to the nearby school. Barren Park Elementary is just a 10 -minute walk away, and is particularly well equipped: every student is issued with a free iPad instead of a notebook. More than 100 schoolchildren from Buena Vista are enrolled in Palo Altos schools.

All of Renes juveniles went to university, the first generation of the family to do so. Erika, who lives a few doors down from her parents and sister, is hoping to follow her daddies sample and save enough fund to transport Andre to university. But the family horror this wont happen if they have to move.

We might be able to stay in the sphere, Saul tells, but it will be living offer cheque to wage cheque; we will not be able to save. The Escalantes arent the only family who have lived in the ballpark for generations. Blanca Fonseca moved with her family from Mexico City in 1981, when she was 14, and has watched its transformation from all Caucasian elderlies to 90% Hispanic parents with “their childrens”. The common( total population 400) now mansions 10% of all the Hispanic people living in Palo Alto.

I stood 33 times in this trailer, she announces of the small story she shares with her husband, a waiter at Reposado, a high-end Mexican eatery in downtown Palo Alto. A photo of the couple standing outside the trailer on their wed day takes pride of place on the sideboard. We decided to work hard and stay here to save money, so that we would have enough money for my son to be the first party in the family to go to university. I craved him to have a better life, and he did.

Three years ago, Joe Jisser, whose pedigree has co-owned Buena Vista since the 80 s, transmitted letters to all residents saying he was considering selling the park to developers. Tension between the residents and Jisser, 44, has remained high ever since, and powerful Palo Altans lawyers, publicists and academics have thrown their weight behind the residents cause.

Developmental psychologist Professor Amado Padilla, of Stanford University, two miles up El Camino Real, has been working to highlight health risks to the families if their children are forced to leave their Palo Alto academies. I dont wondering where these households will go it has become so expensive living a life in Silicon Valley, he answers. My son is a college graduate who works full era, and he cant yield living a life in Palo Alto. What hope is there for service proletarians? Our police force, most of our coaches, most of the professional service employees, dont live[ in or near Palo Alto ], answers Padilla, who has been a resident since 1998. If the ballpark shuts and theyre not able to stay here, these people are going to lose their jobs, their homes, and “their childrens” are going to lose one of the best institution regions in the state.

A study by Padilla and his students found that none of the 129 school-age children around the common, 90% of whom are Hispanic, had fallen out of academy, compared with a 26.7% drop-out rate of Hispanic students nationwide. Several Buena Vista students have stimulated it to college in recent years, including Karen Camacho, who is currently at Stanford, the Ivy League university that has given delivery to so many of the tech startups that offspring Silicon Valley.

It is the businesses that have moved it so expensive to live in the orbit, and Padilla says they probably should take specific responsibilities and try to accommodate the workers who need to live close to their employment. It would be nice if Facebook did, if Google did, if Apple did if they took specific responsibilities to maintain affordability in Palo Alto and the circumventing communities.

Its not just the Palo Alto community that is suffering from the marching of tech business across California. In 2013, protesters smashed openings on the Google- and Apple-branded bus that move works to their Silicon Valley jobs, waving placards speaking Fuck off Google. A University of California, Berkeley learn found that leases within a short gait of a Google bus stop are lift at a rate of 20%, compared with a 5% national norm. The shuttle impression has helped send payments in the more popular San Francisco vicinities above some of the most expensive areas of Manhattan.

Ken Dauber is a Palo Alto resident and a Google software engineer. Over a lunch of kale salad, three-bean soup and shrimp fettuccine in the dappled sunshine outside his Google office, Dauber explains why this trailer park is representing a wider difficulty. For these pedigrees, going their boys into Palo Alto schools and hearing them graduate is part of an upward-mobility campaign, he enunciates. It is about inducing sure the next generation lives middle-class was living in America, so that they dont have to represent the same kind of relinquishes as their parents.

Dauber knows that his employer is in part to blame for the overwhelming distres on land values in the Valley, and has told his leaders they should be doing more to assistant not only their own workers, but military forces of lowly paid people who help keep the community clicking. Losing this common would intend losing an enormous amount of ethnic and income diversity.

In May 2015, after a two-and-a-half-year review, Palo Alto City Council approved Jissers plan to sell the park, saying that landowners have a legal right to sell their belonging when they want. As part of the application, Jisser has pledged to compensate inhabitants for the loss of their trailers, which in most cases cannot be moved, and pay for temporary accommodation and relocation expenses. The inhabitants say the money offered does not come close to covering their costs. Padilla, Dauber and several other tenants of Palo Alto have helped inhabitants file suits against the city council for approving Jissers redevelopment plan with, they claim, insufficient considered by the impact and relocation costs.

As the residents panicked, a potential saviour marched on to Buena Vistas forecourt. Joe Simitian, the county supervisor of Santa Clara, the local authority that administers Palo Alto and often of Silicon Valley, has cleared it his mission to end the order progress towards eviction and save the common and its residents.

He is not challenging Jisser in special courts, but plea directly to his billfold. Simitian, a 62 -year-old balding anglophile, has pulled together $39 m of metropolitan and district money to give Jisser a third path: sell the park to his authority and allow the residents to stay, while making a tidy earning on his familys original investment.

Under Simitians propose, the ballpark would be transmit to Caritas Corporation, a non-profit organisation that has rescued 20 mobile home commons across California. Run by Robert Redwitz, Caritas, whose name is derived from attending about others, was set up in 1996 to render and preserve character, affordable casing for beings of low income and symbolizes, focusing on manufactured home parks.

Simitian, the son of a educator, confesses he is emotionally are subject to the Buena Vista residents predicament, but says he is motivated by a more practical issue. Throw aside all the values-laden issues and social issues, and just ask yourself as a practical purposes: can an country like Silicon Valley subsist if it doesnt have parties that can do the duty all levels of society motives?

The right of low-income families to a good education has long been close to Simitians heart. His first political persona was as president of the Palo Alto School Board between 1983 and 1991, before rising to become mayor of the city and then county superintendent. In 2000, he struck an agreement with Stanford University that, if it wanted to expand, it would have to give a significant amount to an inexpensive home money. That money words a big chunk of the currency Simitian is offering to the Jisser family.

The Jissers officially rebuffed Simitian and Caritass offer in September. Their advocate indicates that they did so because they cant enter into negotiations with Simitian and other potential purchasers while the residents persist action at law against the city. Because of the ongoing threat of action at law from the very same inhabitants association, the Jisser family has not been able to honestly enter into negotiations with other interested parties, Jissers lawyer suggests. The Jisser family will not be coerced into accepting a sale agreement by the use of litigation as a strong-arm tactic.

But Simitian told me that he conceives Jissers abandonment is the start of the bargaining process, rather than a straight-out refusal to negotiate. Even so, Jisser, who arrives for work at Buena Vista at 5am every morning, refused to speak to me when I saw his prefab part within the ballpark. The pedigree have given up trying to make their speciman via the media. In a snatched discussion with a reporter from USA Today earlier this year, he said, I dont know what to tell you. I live down in San Jose. I entail, I cant even afford Palo Alto.

Simitian is now on a mission to find extra stores, going through his contacts in the tech fellowships around the Valley for fund to sweeten the deal. If that doesnt design, he says, hes prepared to join the residents in front of the bulldozers. He will be standing there with a cluster of new friends. Amanda, Arturo, Erika, Melodie, Roberto and the rest of the Buena Vista 400 will be there, and theyve pledged to dig in for a fight. I dont plan on going anywhere, Melodie supposes. Im going to be here until they pick me up and carry me out.
