Mini rant time. Post came up on my dash about a self proclaimed fat person struggling with fitting into plus size clothes that weren’t sized right for them.  YES, a healthier weight would help. But while you get from unhealthy to healthy you still need clothes. And it’s frustrating as fuck when you’re fat (or on the road to healthier weight) and you’re trying to buy clothes and NOTHING FITS.  Or worse you can have 10 things in your cart sized 10 different ways and nothing fits. Or they all fit. Or some of them do but most don’t or...you get the idea. So I’m down almost 100# from where I started 2 years ago. Oddly I’m mostly still in the same ‘plus size’ clothes - because sizing isn’t even remotely consistent anymore. Not for women’s clothes anyway. You have: Plus size, women’s, misses, juniors and petites and sometimes other shit thrown in the middle for added variety. So I got the pleasure of going clothing shopping on Sunday. Winter clothes to be precise. A gift from my boyfriend who wanted me to be warm this winter at work.  I wanted sweaters - warm, fluffy...yeah no happening. Not for my size. Juniors yes, misses yes. Plus size gave me 80+ options for granny cardigans in thin weaves and ugly colors. Finally I find 10 items I want. Go in to try them on. Look at sizing: Ladies - generic term in this case to differentiate between men’s which isn’t as form-fitting.  Plus size - which simply means women who aren’t a size 10 or smaller. Misses - (i serously wondered here but it was in the plus size section and labeled a 3x)  And two things listed as OSFM - one size fits “Most” whatever the fuck most is. Sweaters - found 4 different options that weren’t skimpy and hideous. They were sized: Plus size XL, 2XL, 3XL and...5XL.  I”m currently 180#. Guess which ones were too tight? 3XL and 5XL both plus size were smaller size wize than the XL - listed as ladies XL and the Plus size 2XL - similar style just different mfg. So I put the 3x and 5x on the back on the rack. Get 2 of the XL thing in different colors because it was warmer than the crap I put back. Pants - XL - no designation ladies or mens. Looking at them there was zero way I was getting my fat ass into those...holy crap my ass looks fabulous and they’re not cutting off circulation.  Same thing with another pair of pants by a different company - Plus size Women’s 4xl - way too tight to even get buttoned. The second pair was designed almost the same as the first - but was a different color, different mfg. Got the smaller one that fit. activewear - all of it described as misses petite. “No way am i...this fits and I can breathe.” One odd piece of activewear size 24/26 - I grabbed it because it was on clearance and i liked it. Fit close to the body like the misses petite in another style by another company.  Buying men’s boots - women’s had no support in the ankle and the sizing was way off - buy similar pair for men - better ankle support, sizing was true to size and I only went down one size from what I wear in women’s normally. Had to go up 4 sizes in women’s to find something that fit.  Buying gloves: women’s small/medium - I have tiny hands but thicker wrists from doing chainmaille. My forearms are dense and I hate compression around the wrist. Men’s small is so ginormous I could get both hands into one glove. Women’s small/medium I can’t get it over my hand. Women’s large I can’t get my fingers even half way in. There’s no happy medium in the lower priced gloves. Isotoner women’s fit - so did the men’s but I liked the women’s version better.  Do you see why it’s hard for someone who MIGHT be even remotely thinking about losing weight to hate going shopping for clothes? Because while we need to be covered - finding things that are consistently sized and designed for bodies with curves, there’s a very frustrating aspect to shopping when you’re not a stick with boobs. Not saying there’s anything wrong with being a stick with boobs but the rest of us have a struggle on our hands to find things that FIT and when an hour shopping trip turns into 3-4 hours because everything’s made up and the sizing doesn’t matter because no one pays attention...yeah it’s frustrating and if you’re doing it in winter and already wearing layers yeah it’s going to be fun doing the mexican hat dance or backstage costume changes for a play in a phone booth sized cell without stagehands to help you in and out of each outfit.  Losing weight and getting healthier are great. But for fuck’s sake let’s please go back to universal sizing standards instead of whatever the fuck it is we’re using now. Please? This shit is why I’d rather hand sew an entire outfit over a week than go clothing shopping. Because it’s depressing to find something you really love in a size that should MORE THAN fit your body size/type and finding out it’s smaller than something marked the equivalent of 7 sizes smaller than you normally wear, only to be unable to get it on, get it zipped or any number of other issues and get disappointed throwing 8 of 10 items back on the shelf because there’s zero consistency to sizing anymore.

I’m not tagging this body positivity because I dont’ want to hear shit complaints. Yep. I’m fat. Still am. Still will be for a while. Yep I let myself get there. Yep I’m working on undoing it. Yep it’s probably going to take the rest of my life to get there and maintain it. I’m still trying. And the fact is, I’m trying for myself and no one else. While I have a boyfriend who loves me, I’m doing this for me. So I can love myself too.  Still, yep I’m a fat chick. I’m okay with this. I’m less than I was 2 years ago and more than I was last year. All most of us want is some consitency in sizing so we’re not nearly as mentally drained trying to clothe ourselves shopping locally. There should be marked differences between kids clothes, adult smalls and adult larger sizes. Finding Adult Large and Adult 5xl to be polar opposite of expectations...that’s annoying as fuck.
