Beyond the Rainbow—Build a Diverse Board of Independent Thinkers
The boardroom is the last place where CEOs want to rock the boat. But good governance shouldn’t be comfortable. If too many heads bob in agreement, you might want to take a closer look at who is seated at the table. Collegiality among leaders is a good thing. It can fast track important projects. On the other hand, a shortage of debate could be a symptom of tunnel vision. A narrow view might…

Sustainable development goals and how I plan to implement them
Sustainable development goals (SDG’s) are a programme set up by the United Nations to eradicate "poverty, protect the planet" and allow people to live in peace by 2030 (United Nations, 2021).  As an occupational therapist working within the community, sustainable development goals play a role in our implementation of our practice, because within the community we are faced with many people who are experiencing poverty which affects their ability to live comfortable lives.  Therefore, we as occupational therapists need to be aware of sustainable development goals and how we can implement them into the projects that we run within the community.
One of the goals that is addressed at the clinic is “good health and well being” (2021). Occupational therapists believe in health promotion.  The projects that have been set up are all centred around providing a service to the community.   At the clinic this is done in several ways: health promotion talks every day, in the hopes of reaching the people sitting in the line and developing the buy-in from them so that they would be interested in coming to consult with us.  As well as, developing brochures on relevant health topics within the community so that these can be passed around to the people in line after health promotion talks. By doing this we aim to activate advocacy within client’s that we speak to to maintain their health and request assistance with their health (Hämäläinen, 2021). By promoting occupational therapy and healthy lifestyles each day we aim to work daily towards the goal of good health and well being.
Secondly, as occupational therapists aim to improve education therefore, the SDG of “Quality education” (2021). There is a clear disparity in the quality of education within the Kenville community. This poor quality of stimulation at the creches and the subsequent delay in learning at a school level is exacerbating the effects of poverty (Amnesty International, 2020). Children are attending grade 1 and don't know the alphabet or any numbers and are unable to spell their names. These are basic prerequisites for grade 1 and without them the child will be falling more and more behind in class daily.  For me, it’s concerning because it will have a knock-on effect on that child’s life for the rest of his school career and will have more effects than just school delays such as self-esteem and confidence.   But how can we do anything to help this? The important thing from my point of view is that we are doing something, no matter how small it may be. Hence, why at the moment we have several projects running within the education system of Kenville. Each week we visit these creches and schools around the community to screen children for learning and developmental delays, intending to identify any children having difficulties so that they can be assisted and followed up for therapy as soon as possible. By doing this we are playing our small role in attempting to stop learning difficulties from a young age in the creches and compensate for the difficulties the children in the schools are then facing. By doing so we are attempting to change the quality of education provided to these children.
(My Dream Course Blog, 2013) I love this quote from Nelson Mandela, because he perfectly describes the benefit of a good education.  A good education provides so many good opportunities.
Tumblr media
Gender equality is another goal that is important within the community (2021). Having been raised by a very independent woman and priding myself on being an independent woman.  There is a role for both men and women on this earth.  I have always had a  strong will within me to advocate for women's rights and develop advocacy within women.  For me inequality is evident in terms of employment. Most of the people I speak to at the clinic who are working are men and a few women, because in this community the women are staying at home to care for their children.  As long as it's their choice I don't have a problem.  However, I want women to feel confident and strong enough to advocate for themselves.  At the Sea Cow Lake clinic, there is a Moms and Tots group and a Maternal health group where the aim is to uplift women and create a community within the community of women who can assist each other. Alternatively, to run a group for men and speak about feminism to educate them on the importance of men's role in gender equality. Then, we can improve the attitudes of women towards themselves and hopefully one day the attitudes of men as well.
A more difficult SDG that I would like to acknowledge is “Reduce inequalities” (2021). It’s difficult because there are so many inequalities facing the Kenville community.  According to Statistics South Africa, in 2015 women received 30% less in salary monthly than men did.  And black South Africans earned the least amount of money with Indian/ Asian South Africans next and white South Africans earning the highest (Africa, 2020). These statistics are frightening and leave questions in my mind, because I am trying to sieve through these inequalities and identify how I can make a change. When in reality all I feel I can do is set up a few small projects and ensure their sustainability.  Currently, at Kenville we have a project running called KITE where women from the community are hired to sell second hand (donated) clothing. This programme is a way to instil vocational skills in women and train them for a work environment simultaneously.  Going forward, I believe that the best way in which I can make a difference is to advocate for gender equality and develop understanding of the political and social norms within the community and challenge these so that I can begin to make a voice for change.
Finally I would like to address “Decent work and economic growth” (2021).  This is also one that is difficult to address.  A way in which we can encourage economic growth is through encouraging entrepreneurship (Shapiro, 2013).  I will do this by engaging patients in projects such as KITE to engage them in vocational skills training.  By developing these vocational skills it can empower and uplift these women to possibly start a business of their own to earn money.
In conclusion, there are many ways that I wish to uplift the Kenville community.  The best way that one can uplift a community is to put your time and effort into developing its people.  By looking carefully at the SDG’s I hope to put some of the plans I have stated into action.  Going forward, when I am at the clinic, I am going to work hard at advocating for gender equality in my groups and individually when speaking to people in the community.  I am going to encourage individuality and independent thinking.  I am going to work hard to uplift the children and continue to spend time in the mornings on health promotion.

Yes, President Trump Is Making America Great Again GARY SHAPIRO8/07/2017
Six months into his first term, President Trump's headline achievements are often overshadowed by the media's daily assault on the White House. I hear the misgivings of my tech industry colleagues, but let's face facts: By objective measures, Trump is fulfilling his famous campaign promise to "Make America Great Again."
In fact, I see eight signs that we are on the right track:
The stock market continues to break records. The record-high Nasdaq is up 18% this year. The S&P 500's Tech Sector index hit a record high not seen since its bubble in 2000. And the Dow Jones industrial average continues to enjoy new highs.
The job market is heating up. The unemployment rate fell from 4.8% in October to 4.4% in June. This year, the civilian labor force participation rate hit 160 million Americans, a record never once reached in eight years under President Obama. And Trump set this record without harmful record deficits or the Federal Reserve pumping trillions of dollars into the economy.
Wages are rising. For the first time in seven years, the working class saw a jump in pay. According to Department of Labor data released on July 19, average pay for the lowest-income Americans went up 3.4% over 2016. We see the effects of this increasingly strong labor force here at the Consumer Technology Association. We win multiple awards as a great place to work and we pay competitive salaries, but in recent months we have had to pay more to lure the best people to work for us.
Businesses are investing more in the U.S. Draconian federal rules are on the way out. Businesses are booming, thanks to the stock market and potential for tax reform. And the president's push for U.S. investment is being taken seriously, prompting many American and even some foreign companies to announce major U.S. investments.
Our foreign positioning has improved. Our allies are realizing that Uncle Sam has limits to his generosity. Despite some political bluster, President Trump has kept our commitment to NATO while raising pressure on other countries to keep their commitments to the alliance.
And our relationship with key countries continues to improve. Through personal diplomacy, hard work and a strong team, Trump has developed relationships with leaders around the world in an effort to strengthen ties and avoid conflict.
Trade policy and trade agreements can improve. Dropping out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) seems isolationist and contrary to our interests. Indeed, TPP signatories are already flirting with China, which is seeking to fill the void the U.S. left after withdrawing from the deal.
But for now, we can focus on the positive by fine-tuning specific problem areas of international trade that have long flummoxed negotiators. The NAFTA renegotiation will likely include many TPP provisions, like those on digital trade and the internet economy. If it moves forward, NAFTA could then be extended to other previous TPP partners.
And although no free trade agreement with Great Britain could be finalized until after their exit from the EU, the early interest in such an agreement signals potential wider benefits. Tech deals with the EU that would halt their fines and restrictions on our greatest tech companies should become a priority — and a deal with our closest friend Great Britain will be a signature achievement from Trump.
Americans are safer and more secure. Other than a nuclear North Korea, a problem kicked down the road by the last few presidents, Americans today enjoy a safer world and stronger economy. The Mideast is no longer boiling over, ISIS is dying, Asia is stabilizing and Europe is expecting less money from us.
America is fostering innovative new technologies. The Trump administration is preparing for the future by focusing on new technologies, such as self-driving vehicles, drones, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. And his team is thinking about how to use these technologies to encourage U.S. manufacturing and infrastructure. The administration's decision to use biometric screenings to track U.S. visitors using visas is another step that will ensure American safety through the use of technology.
However, several challenges remain: Trump has not yet fulfilled his potential as a dealmaker with Congress. The Treasury is slated to run out of funds by the first half of October, and significant legislative achievements, especially with the Democratic resistance movement on one side and the Freedom Caucus on the other, will be difficult.
Trump's newsworthy tweets and a leaky White House, as well as his tough positions on immigration, the border wall, and threats to companies and other countries, may be too much fodder for the media to resist. But get past the bravado, the drama and the trivialities – the fact is that under President Trump, Americans are safer and more prosperous than at any time in the past decade.
The path to greatness is long, but we're heading in the right direction under President Trump.

Ose robotic sex toy

“Sex tech” company Lora DiCarlo has accused the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) of “sexism” and “double standards” after the show revoked the company’s innovation award for a robotic female sex toy. In a blog post, Lora DiCarlo founder and CEO Lora Haddock accused CES of “gender bias, sexism, misogyny, and double standards,” after the show revoked an innovation award for the company’s advanced “Osé” female sex toy, and questioned why other sex tech companies didn’t face the same treatment. We don’t hide what we do, and we firmly believe that women, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and LGBTQI folks should be vocally claiming our space in pleasure and tech — both of which are still heavily dominated by male-CEOs and executives,” declared Haddock. “We also believe that society needs to drop the taboo around sex and sexuality — it’s a part of life and health that absolutely should be part of mainstream discourse… That’s why we
