Antara lain karena kandungan nikotin dan logam di dalamnya. ”Ujung-ujungnya akan menimbulkan inflamasi atau peradangan di paru, saluran napas, bisa kemudian memengaruhi kerja jantung, kerusakan sel dan karsinogen,” kata Erlina Burhan, ketua Satgas Covid-19 PB IDI, Sabtu (14/1). Rokok elektrik merupakan suatu alat yang berfungsi seperti rokok, namun dalam penggunaannya tidak membakar daun tembakau, melainkan mengubah cairan menjadi uap. Rokok konvensional apabila dibakar menghasilkan asap, sementara rokok eletrik bila dipanaskan menghasilkan uap kemudian diisap ke saluran napas sampai ke paru-paru. Erlina menyebutkan, rokok elektrik yang juga dikenal dalam berbagai nama seperti vapour, e-cig, e-juice, e-liquid, personal vaporizer (pv), e-cigaro, green cig, dan lainnya, mengandung kadar nikotin umumnya sekitar 14,8 – 87,2 mg/ml pada cairan. Sementara menurut analisis Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan Amerika Serikat (FDA), dalam 100 cc isapan rokok terdapat 26,8 – 43,2 mikrogram nikotin. ”Saat seseorang menghirup 30 kali isapan itu bisa mencapai kadar nikotin 1 mg, sama seperti yang diantarkan satu rokok konvensional. Kita tahu orang menghirup berkali-kali,” sebut Erlina. The American Journal of Physiology-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology menyebut nikotin, berdasar The New England Journal of Medicine, dikatakan dapat menyebabkan adiksi. Selain nikotin, kandungan lain dalam vape berupa propylene glikol dan gliserin yang dapat mengiritasi saluran napas dan paru.
