“Sploot like nobody’s watching.
What the sploot? “Splooting” is when an animal lay spread-eagle, usually face down with all arms and legs spread out. Why sploot? It could be that an animal wants an all-body stretch, or it’s simply a comfortable and relaxing position, or stretching out on a cool surface may help lower their body temperature. There are different types of sploot. Who knew? There’s the full sploot, where both hind legs are splayed behind the animal. Then there is the side sploot when one hind leg sticks out to the side while the other leg is tucked in, and finally the half sploot where one back leg sticks straight out and the other is tucked underneath their belly. Be bear, squirrel, or even tortoise, it’s officially sploot season. Splootacular! Image 1: What an unBEARable day! It's not uncommon to see a bear sploot, or sit face down after digging a belly hole to relax in and digest a meal. Image: Bear face down relaxing @/katmainpp. NPS/M. I like fat bears and I can not lie. In preparation for the long, harsh winter, brown bears at Katmai National Park & Preserve in Alaska have been spent the last months stuffing themselves and packing on the pounds. The chubbiest bears are the ones most likely to emerge healthy next spring. Every year, Katmai features before and after photos of some of the park’s bears so that the public can vote for their favorite husky bears. The competition starts tomorrow on their Facebook page. Do yourself a huge favor and check it out: www.facebook.com/KatmaiNPP Photos by National Park Service.

Here's how to participate in #FatBearWeek: this is a single elimination tournament to determine who will be crowned 2020's fattest bear on the Brooks River. For each pairing of bears, you will be given the opportunity to vote on our brand new #FatBearWeek website, https://explore.org/fat-bear-week. Votes will be considered final at 6:00 pm AKDT on the day of the post. The bear with the most votes advances. Only one will receive the title of fattest bear!

IT’S TIME Y’ALL 🐻🐻🐻 #FatBearWeek is probably my favorite animal-related celebration (sorry, Shark Week). More info from @katmainpp ・・・ “Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love yah tomorrow, you’re only a day away!” Tomorrow is the day, bears 151 and 856 will face off in the first match-up of #FatBearWeek 2020. Bears on the Brooks River, and across the park experience life within a hierarchy. It’s what allows so many bears to live and eat within such close proximity. Larger boars will typically sit at the top while young adult and subadult bears are toward the bottom. A bear’s place within the hierarchy will dictate where they fish on the river, what bears will tolerate their proximity, and which bears they need to challenge for the top spot! How will the most dominant bear on the Brooks River, 856, fair against the up-and-comer 151? Here's how to participate in #FatBearWeek: this is a single elimination tournament to determine who will be crowned 2020's fattest bear on the Brooks River. For each pairing of bears, you will be given the opportunity to vote on our brand new #FatBearWeek website, https://explore.org/fat-bear-week. Votes will be considered final at 6:00 pm AKDT on the day of the post. The bear with the most votes advances. Only one will receive the title of fattest bear! Photo by @amivitale | A mother brown bear and her cubs take a break from catching salmon at Katmai National Park and Preserve (@katmainpp) in southern Alaska. The park is known for its wild landscapes and for the many brown bears that gather in Brooks Falls to wait for salmon. Katmai is home to an estimated 2,200 brown bears. More bears than people are believed to live on the Alaska peninsula.…

🌲 IT’S NATIONAL PARKS WEEK 🌲 Kicking it off by announcing my boyfriends next Park Ranger season : LASSEN Volcanic National Park! He leaves in about a week for 6 months (🥺), BUT he’ll be the closest he’s ever been to home this time, since it’s only 3 1/2 hours away (🥰)! He did his last 2 seasons in remote @katmainpp Alaska, the previous 2 seasons before that in @greatsanddunesnps Colorado, before that was @fortmchenrynps Maryland, and before that was @olympic_nps Washington (along with many state and county parks & historic sites). 🏔 We’ve been on a long and emotional and chaotic and fun JOURNEY, y’all. Just jumping through all the hoops to get to this very place he/we are at right now. Where he’s finalllyyyyyy able to apply for permanent park positions instead of just seasonal. 🎉 This means, we’ll soon(ish) be moving INTO a National Park, and as exciting as that is for me it’s also low-key scary. To not know where you’ll be moving to let alone exactly when. Or how remote or accessible it’ll be for me to get around. What kind of community (staff/other rangers and their partners) there will be for me there. What kind of job opportunities I’d have and whether or not I’d be able to keep my remote work I currently have. And in the future, what raising our kids would look like in a National Park…👀 It’s pretty difficult as someone who always wants to be in control or have a plan laid out, to just surrender it all and be handed so many unknowns. But I’m also SO HERE for the adventure too!!🎢 I might do some Reels/TT story times and updates on this process as we hear back from parks and make this crazy transition. Happy birthday Kiley! Here she is splitting wood because she got tired of waiting for me to wake-up from a nap and just started doing it herself. She does whatever necessary behind the scenes to keep us all functioning and happy, including lumberjack-ing. I love that she both worries and works for our family. Also she headed to @katmainpp this afternoon for her birthday and I've already heard "I miss mom" and "How much longer is mom gone?" about a hundred times. Jeeeeez kids, it hasn't even been 12 hours! I like to think I'm the fun parent, but clearly Kiley is the most popular. Of course then I caught a whiff of her perfume in our room and couldn't help missing her too. 😢 Anyway this all just a long way of saying we love her sooooo much and are so glad she was born! #happybirthday #ageisjustanumber #30something (at Alaska) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRVvGgnn_lP/?utm_medium=tumblr

Getting down on @katmainpp’s #FatBearWeek like it’s March Madness. Is it fun? Yes. Is it necessary? Absolutely. Body fat means strong chances of winter survival for brown bears, and October is the month that Katmai’s bears are heaviest. The voting is on Facebook, so head to their page and just look at some of these absolute units 🐻🐻🐻 #FindYourpark #nationalparkservice #bears #alaska #alaskalife #natureupclose https://www.instagram.com/p/B3SJKblleWC/?igshid=1a8t3lch6faas
