Who's your favorite character (or top 3 if you can't decide) from the culling games arc (the new ones)?
TOP 3 FROM THE CULLING GAMES
Thank you for sending this ask anon, because unlike most people despite the fact I do agree the pacing for this arc is kind of wonky, I really enjoyed a lot of the new characters and fights introduced in this arc. I wouldn’t call any of these characters “favorites” yet, because they haven’t gotten a lot of screentime but these are the three that I’m most invested in.
1. Hakari Kinji
Hakari is not only a rebel against Jujutsu Society, he is a breath of fresh air compared to all the other characters. Everyone faces the grimdark world of Jujutsu Society with a scowl of determination on their face, and meanwhile Hakari michael Jackson dances in the middle of a fight, has like fifty ex girlfriends, and blows all of his money at the panchinko parlor.
Hakari is irresponsible, a lush, selfish, but there’s something really unique about his drive to take gambles, risks, and enjoy life. The part where he says that if people didn’t take a risk then they wouldn’t be able to fall in love really gets to me, because many characters in Jujutsu Kaisen tend to play it safe in their relationships and never try to get close because they are afraid of that inevitable loss, meanwhile not only does Hakari have a girlfriend, he has been through several.
He is just so unafraid of loss and risk it has turned him into someone devoted to enjoying life to its fullest, he hums the jingle of his favorite tune in the middle of a fight, he is an admittedly selfish character in his motivations and yet at the same time Kin-Chan shines the brightest when he’s helping his friends. He’s made up of equal parts selfishness and selflessness.
His fight is also just the most fun of all the culling game matches, he’s jumping around throwing punches, and taking damage with his immortal body without breaking a sweat, and using his overly complicated jujutsu technique that nobody understands over and over again. He’s not the most complicated character, but he may in fact be the most fun.
2. Hajime Kashimo
I like Hajime for similiar reasons that I like Hakari, they are extremely selfish individuals and yet there’s something likable in how much they devote themselves to their more hedonistic and adrenaline pumping desires. Everyone in Jujutsu Kaisen wants to be the strongest, but of all characters Hajime is shown to be one hundred percent dedicated to the fight.
He’s not out to win, he’s out to compeltely conquer his opponent and show that he is superior. Which is why his fight against Hakari is so spectacular because while Hakari is getting by on luck and risk taking, Hajime is trying to dominate the fight and at a disadvantage because he doesn’t want to cheat he wants to find some way to break Hakari when he is immortal and at his peak strength because otherwise the victory won’t be satisfying for him.
There’s also something interesting about how Hajime has no qualms at all about bloodshed and murder, but despite being totally ruthless he’s willing to pal around with Hakari both during and after the fight, and Hakari even leaves an impression on him just by being able to put up a fight and give him an interesting challenge. He’s not really malicious or outright evil, he is just one hundred percent dedicated to the fight, the same way Hakari always takes risks, Hajime will always challenge the strongest person around without holding anything back.
3. Hana / Angel
This is a pretty recent one who does not have a lot of screentime, but there was something about her backstory, and her connection to both Megumi and Sukuna / Yuji that shot her up to the top for me. She relfects Megumi in a lot of itneresting way, basically the same way Megumi puts his sister on a pedestal as the ideal good person and the kind of person he wants to support, Hana puts Megumi on that same pedestal as her savior. She only helps people to be worthy of standing by the side of the person who saved her.
There’s a lot of interesting symbolism in her character, being a christian angel is mainly japanese story, the conflict she brings about by being the opposite of the disgraced one Sukuna and out to kill him, the way her ideals and backstory line up with Megumi so well.
It’s my hope that she’s going to turn out to be an important female character, just because of how much she is connected to the plot and plot important now, especially since Jujutsu Kaisen is sort of lacking in those characters right now. It’s also interesting to see where her bond with Angel will go, because it seems on the surface a much more cooperative one than Yuji and Sukuna but at the same time there’s a lot of ominous foreshadowing in a character who looks like a simple and straightforward pure angelic archetype in a story that tends to you know... subvert both symbolism and black and white thinking and traditional ideas of good and evil.

47, 48 and 49 for the uni ask?
47. What do you wish you’d done differently in your first year?
i don’t know tbh i’m pretty proud of my first year cause i managed to pass every single class at the first time even statistics and logic and i made a friend so like... maybe i wish i ate more and actually paid attention to the fact that i felt hungry most of the time cause i forgot to eat a lot during that time i was too excited about being at uni
48. What things do you think you did right in your first year?
i had a pretty open mind about trying new things and not letting fear of the new stop me, i signed up for classes meant for grad students and i chose to do two specializations at once and so far these decisions haven’t bitten me in the ass yet!
49. What are your thoughts on Academia?
generally i have a burning hate for bureaucracy, i hate the fact that so many things at uni are dictated by online systems and points and there’s so many papers to sign and you often can’t attend classes that suit your major and your itnerests because you have a certain amount of points to get or the online system crashes down, i also think Academia in poland is a very different thing than it is for example in the US and western europe - it’s definitely not as exclusive and high class, i mean it’s still very much out of reach for many people.
i think academic aesthetic and gloating over being Educated is often based in class privilege and it’s fucking useless, i think academia favors men and that most things that apply to the whole society apply to academic circles as well. don’t get me wrong, i love being at uni, i love being in an academic environment where i can get educated, talk to other people, write, read etc, but it doesn’t change the fact that there’s still a lot of harmful structures to challenge.
