"Can't sleep?"
He kept his unwavering eyes on the full moon, his hands motioned to adjust the loose sleeping robes that hung off of his body. Sesshomaru stood by the shoji screens and drew his lips in a tightened line as he could feel the young woman approaching him. Sleep...what a redundant activity. He didn't need it unless his body required healing, but at least he was good at acting for the most part. Tonight, however, he could not seem to do both; sleep or act like he was. "Hn...it is of no concern. You need rest, miko."

“Mr. Taisho, you are required at the office today. You have a meeting with our new student. She will be your TA starting next week. Oddly enough her grandfather made sure to inform us that she is ill quite often...” the secretarial voice drowned out into the background as the wheel gripped in his hands rotated to the left while he parked his Mercedes in the designated Tokyo University parking lot.
His commute had been yet another long and boring one into work. The usual concrete sea greeted him with the odd greenery Tokyo offered in the amidst of it all. A bored sigh escaped his lips when he gripped the inner door handle and opened it. Stepping out, the man ran his fingers through his hair and grabbed his briefcase from the passenger’s seat. ‘Hn...a teacher’s assistant. I do not need one, but it is what it is....’ he had one here and there in the past few years, but they barely helped him as he got majority of the work done on his own. It was unfortunate for them as they were not getting the experience they wanted, but Sesshomaru was not a man to allow someone else to do anything for him in an overall sense. Besides, majority of the TAs he received ended up being women who just oogled at him from the corner. They were an annoyance more than anything, but he just kept his mouth shut and pretended he couldn’t hear them from 10 feet away.
He made his way to the Department of History and grasped the door handle, ready to turn it until he heard a familiar voice on the other side. It was an odd sensation, one he had not felt since the past. He was certain he had heard this particular voice many times and on occasion even cause him temporary hearing loss from utter shrieking. The only individual he could think of was his brother’s wench. Taking into account that she was a mere mortal, it was improbable that she would still be alive to this day.
He stared at the door handle for a moment before he entered. Immediately his eyes locked onto hers in an instance.

Collagraph: an engraving technique that I put to the service of page 13 of "Children of Earthling". To Paint A Smile
"The legend says that this woman in the painting moves. However, as long as I've owned this piece it's proven to be rather disappointing." The old man wheezed out a chuckle as he leaned over the glass case, pointing to the old frame with the painting in it. The grey hairs were sparse and receding on the elderly man, however it seemed like his spirits were always positive. He spoke with such nostalgia and a distant look in his eyes; he mentioned his daughter and how the painting was passed down in the family. His granddaughter went missing shortly after the Higurashi family obtained the picture, but the painting always remained in the attic. "I am unsure if the girl was always in the painting or not...but the legend itself is silly and a young girl appearing in the picture sounds just as silly...hehehe..."
The young man hardly made a sound as the antique shop owner continued with his stories, allowing him to continue looking at the artifacts and old items which were stacked neatly and obviously looked after with care. There wasn't a spec of dust on any of the items and those of high importance were caged in the glass cases, such as the painting. His golden eyes bore into the painting from afar; why was he so fascinated by this legend? What was he looking for and why did he feel so connected? He barely knew why his gut feeling insisted on pressing the matter, but he couldn't back out now; he was already in the store.
"...I will take it."
"Oh? Then it's a deal, Mr...?"
"Taisho."
*****
The sound of quick footsteps sounded in the hollow hallway the long strides stopping in front of an office. It was a study room; dimly lit, black leather couches placed by the walls near the entrance, bookshelves full of books and scrolls and a giant oak desk near the windows at the back of the room. The frame was gently placed on the desk as the demon stared at the navy blue walls intently. Deciding near his desk was the best place for the painting, Sesshomaru hammered a nail in and hung the painting up, eyeing the woman carefully, he couldn't help but wonder why the girl looked....familiar. He waited for a few minutes to see if she moved, but she remained still.
"...This better be worth my time," he muttered, his eyes slowly narrowing. He remained in his office for the rest of the night, waiting and testing his own patience. He remained in the room until sunrise, hoping to see something, but it turned out there was nothing. "Tsk..."
Several nights like this had passed where Sesshomaru would return from work and just wait. He gave himself one week of waiting before he decided to return the item back to the antique store and get his money back. How could he even believe such a story? He was a skeptic at heart.
Convincing himself that he waited long enough, he stood up and hooked his fingers under the frame to lift it up just before something caught his eye. He raised an eyebrow in questioning as he found the young woman in the painting smiling at him. "...Who are you?"
