Shattered glass versions of Seabreaker and Locklift for funsies
They are still not affiliated with either side, Locklift will take others hostage to preform unethical and experimental procedures on. He operated on Seabreaker and saving them from death and at first they chose to follow and aid him out of thanks and having nowhere else to go, but it has grown more into a dependency and they don’t quite know how to operate without always being given commands. Very opposite of their regular counterparts

"Sewn... not really sure what that means. I just sort of wrap myself as tightly as I can. I don't think that's the same thing as 'sewn.' Weird to try and make a softer nest... I think I would try and just lie on the wool unless it was itchy or something." Stranger replied
"Hmph. She does get a bit picky about nests..." Sunchaser chimed in with a soft and teasing rumble. He did get a smack along his forearm from his sister, though their banter was warm.
It was a bit strange that Stranger had figured out to wrap herself in something like clothes independently of humans and fae. She was always a bit cold when the clothes that she came into the Hidden World with no longer fit her and could barely hold itself together. And she had wanted to look like her brothers anyway, so... it was convenient.
"Yes, hives! That's it." Streak replied, nodding and bobbing his head to try and take in his surroundings. "They bury themselves into the stones of cliffs and make hives inside. The dragons are small, but their queen is a sight to behold..."
"Most dragons eat fish, which I guess are richer than something like you." Seabreak said, brushing against Lyra before crouching, slinking through the undergrowth as if he were stalking something. "The Pack Killer may not be something we can prove exists, but there's something that's been making whole packs of dragons disappear - and not just any dragons... the ones like us, but black as night. Like Midnight Wrath."
Sunchaser shook his head, snorting at his younger brother. "No one has seen her in years. No one even knows if she's even still alive."
"But I overheard mother talk about her!" Seabreak insisted, popping his head out from the underbrush before going back to skulking. "I heard her say that the Pack Killer stole her family from her... that she's the last of her kind. Mother said that she overheard Slate meet with her one last time before she disappeared... and if you ask me, I think the Pack Killer is the one who killed Slate, too."
"Oh, come on... Midnight Wrath and Slate were both alphas. What makes you think that something like the Pack Killer would have gotten to them?" Streak rolled his eyes at Seabreak, whacking him with his tail.
"What else could it have been but the Pack Killer?!"
Leaning in to Lyra, Stranger began to mutter to her. "Midnight Wrath was the alpha of our home before I was born. Slate was the alpha when I arrived. She apparently challenged Midnight Wrath for the position and then Midnight left... and at some point, she disappeared." Looking between her brothers, the woman then wilted a bit. "...I didn't know about any of this, though."
Realizing Strange didn’t know what she was talking about, Lyra struggled to explain.
“Pillows are, fabric like my clothes.” She lifted her skirt to show off the material. “They are sewn so you can stuff them with soft things. Like wool of a sheep or feathers from a bird. It makes for a soft thing to lay on. And blankets. They are big pieces of cloth or fur that you cover yourself with to stay warm.” Actually, Lyra’s colorful clothing must be odd to Stranger as well.
“I wear clothes like you wear your brother’s scales. It protects me from the elements. It is also frowned upon in fae and human society not to wear clothes.” Speaking of, she’ll have to clean her clothes when they got to the river. The blood may have dried but still held a scent.
“I’d think no dragon would want to eat something all bone and feathers.” She giggled and nudged back at Seabreak. But as they spoke of a Pack Killer she did get a bit nervous. Looking to each of the brothers as they spoke. At one point her wings tucking in tightly to her back and rattling. Though she tried to laugh it off.
“You-you’re not scaring me. But the story of the Pack Killer sounds… scary…” Lyra rubbed her arm and brought her attention back to Stranger.
“Bees. You’re thinking of bees and honey. So the Fireworms make hives.” The fae followed her friend’s line of thought.

Here, Rex tells the story of his coming out and his father’s rejection of his identity, navigating abuse and survival on the streets.

Widening her dark eyes at Hiccup, Stranger tilted her head at him dumbfounded. It was one thing to be invited to stay temporarily after they had been found, the idea of them leaving on their own still in their heads even if they had sort of been...dragging their feet on that idea. But it was another for the leader of this place to offer them some sense of permanence, to make something that belonged to them where they lived. "You do that for us...?"
It would certainly make things easier and safer for them in the future. They weren't sure what winters were like above ground, but they knew enough to know that it was cold and they likely wouldn't survive otherwise. There were plenty of dragons here that didn't survive in the cold normally, so the humans likely had a way of protecting them and keeping them safe in the winter where dragons would otherwise struggle to.
And whether they decided to leave or not, shelter from storms especially in the coming winter would help them. They didn't exactly have certainty elsewhere and if they wanted to know how things actually worked up here - mostly Stranger, though she could tell that her brothers were just as curious as she was, at this point - then staying would likely be in their best interests...at least for now. "That would be...nice. Safer when it is warm. Day is warmer than night. Lets us hide better when it warmer." It wasn't just their coloration, it was also the quality of their scales and the effectiveness of their cloaking that was affected by the time of day.
But how to explain that to Hiccup...
Spying a stray plank of wood in a nearby barrel, Stranger grabbed a hold of it that was dryer than the stick she was using to draw in the mud and tapped on Sunchaser's shoulder, Seabreak already arguing with a flock of Terrible Terrors about a fish he had staked a claim on and Streak watching carefully from a nearby rooftop from above. Sunchaser wanted to stick close to Toothless in case something changed that required his immediate attention - like his sister asking him to light a fire.
Obliging, lighting the end of it for her, Stranger trilled affectionately towards him as she then turned back to Hiccup. The hand that was holding the plank was tucked back into the sleeve to protect her hand from accidentally burning and she was holding it underneath her other sleeve, the flames warping the quality of her dragonskin wrappings until they shimmered into a perfect mirror sheen. "Scales can get really hot and not hurt us. When sun is out, day is warm, so we can hide longer." Pulling the flame away from her sleeve, it took a decent few moments for the mirror shine to wear off, the skin translucent once more. She carefully watched for Hiccup's reactions to see what he thought of this little adaptation of theirs, curious to see the thoughts that would flicker across his verdant gaze. "Night is cold, so is harder to stay hot. So, we can't hide as good at night when cold."
To demonstrate this, she heated up her sleeve again and then once it warped to its reflective quality, she then dipped it in the closest barrel of water and pulled it out quickly, the scales of her dragonskin changing back much faster than before when she allowed it to wear off gradually. "Scales get really hot, but not good at staying warm. If too cold...it get really hard to be warm and stay warm. W-winter can be really bad. Not safe for us. Mothermouth never too cold, so...never had to be scared of winter, before."
With a lopsided grin, he nodded, "Yes, exactly! Humans certainly do that!" It was a good way to look at it, though he preferred people weren't like that. Unfortunately, it was inevitable.
Hiccup's brows furrowed slightly as she cringed, but any worries he had were quickly put to ease. "Oh! Don't worry too much about that."
When dragons first started living on Berk, there were quite a few surprises in store for both them and the humans. Eventually, all got used to the others presence, but it took some time.
Though, that brought up an idea...
"Hey, would you like a shelter built in the cove? For future storms? A, a place that will stay warm in the coming winter?"
Shrugging, he answered, "Oh, mostly in the day. But we've taken our fair share of flights at night as well. I suppose you and the others prefer to fly in the daytime, you can certainly blend in better than at night..."

Before the Kojjal, the Eta and Vet trade ships were marvellous metal machines that cut through the seas, swiftly transporting goods all across the northern coasts but in the end, the Kojjal picked them off one by one. For the past few hundred years, the Eta-Vet Pact made wooden sailing ships and kept the few remnants of those fine vessels are stored away in drydocks for the days when fuel and safety are in abundance. Though the Kojjal still raid Eta-Vet trade routes, the Pact has declared "We are thankful to the alien-drones, as now we can call on their support to defend our vessels from assault. The North can expect the old Seabreakers back in service as soon as repairs and reliable fuel supplies are available. And once our industries are back online, the old days of a prosperous north will come again."
Tumblr media
In other news, every five years hunter-drones from all over Aradas gather in the Artokkut Swamps to participate in The Great Hunt, a tradition that originally began as an Interhive effort to prevent the invasive Devourer populations from becoming an ecological disaster. However after five years, the survivors of this invasive species manage to completely repopulate the region. It is that time once again, and the hunter-drones buzzing with excitement. One such drone had this to say, "This one glad Kojjal do one good thing, bring Devourers here. Bad for nature, yes. Good for hunters, also yes. Praise Eloku." A controversial opinion, to say the last.

ARC Review: Chaos & Flame by Tessa Gratton and Justina Ireland
Tumblr media
Order
Add to Goodreads
Publication Date: March 28, 2023
Synopsis:
Darling Seabreak cannot remember anything before the murder of her family at the hands of House Dragon, but she knows she owes her life to both the power of her Chaos Boon and House Kraken for liberating her from the sewers where she spent her childhood. So when her adoptive Kraken father is captured in battle, Darling vows to save him--even if that means killing each and every last member of House Dragon. Talon Goldhoard has always been a dutiful War Prince for House Dragon, bravely leading the elite troops of his brother, the High Prince Regent. But lately his brother's erratic rule threatens to undo a hundred years of House Dragon's hard work, and factions are turning to Talon to unseat him. Talon resists, until he's ambushed by a fierce girl who looks exactly like the one his brother has painted obsessively, repeatedly, for years, and Talon knows she's the key to everything. Together, Darling and Talon must navigate the treacherous waters of House politics, caught up in the complicated game the High Prince Regent is playing against everyone. The unlikeliest of allies, they'll have to stop fighting each other long enough to learn to fight together in order to survive the fiery prophecies and ancient blood magic threatening to devastate their entire world. From New York Times bestselling author Justina Ireland and Tessa Gratton comes the first book in a ferocious YA fantasy duology featuring ancient magic, warring factions, and a romance between the two people in the world with the most cause to hate one another.
My Rating: ★★★
*My Review below the cut.
My Review:
This could have been so much more than it was. It had the potential to be an epic slow-burn with tons of political intrigue. Instead we get instalove and some rather obvious political machinations, though most of the story is focused on the "love triangle" of Darling and the two princes, even though the instalove makes it obvious that it's not actually a triangle. It was a struggle to care about any of the characters - except Talon's brother because he was chaotic and very interesting. But the story focused more on Darling and Talon (of course.) The worldbuilding is practically nonexistent, even though the setting could have been very interesting to explore. Especially since they are literally traveling from House to House? There were some parts I liked, and I am intrigued by the ending, but overall it didn't really stand out to me as anything beyond generic YA fantasy. The audiobook was easy to listen to and the voices didn't detract from the story. It wasn't an outstanding performance but it wasn't bad either. *Thanks to Bookishfirst and Razorbill for providing an early copy for review.

Now that I’ve finished the Light Fury bases, I’m gonna make some updated refs of the boys with them before making the other ones :3 I’m almost done with Sunchaser’s, but that will have to wait until tomorrow! I’m gonna try and make them more special than just white with different shades and subtle stripes, so they’ll look a little different than the refs we have now.
Keep an eye out for that! :3 I’ll probably also make references for their parents, too!
