A small cheat sheet, for telling the differences between the real D and fake D.

D’s eyes, unless actively under the influence of blood, are black. While fake D’s eyes are also very dark, they’re a permanent dark pink even in direct sunlight, and certain angles and specific lights will reflect lighter red/pink colors. This is primarily a result of the Sacred Ancestor’s technology used to bring him back to life.

D will always wear his hat, no matter what. Fake D removes his hat often outside of daylight, but especially if D is also around. This is only ever not the case if fake D is actively masquerading as the real D, which he does often when traveling solo across the Frontier.

D’s left palm has more lines than the fake D’s left palm on most occasions—the closed eyes and mouth of the left hand. Though Lefty is capable of making himself completely hidden, he often doesn’t deign to, just so that he can more easily observe their surroundings directly instead of through D’s eyes.

Because he doesn’t have the same hunter instincts as D, as well as the need to keep his left hand available so that Lefty can do his thing, the fake D will not guard or hide his right hand in the same way D does. Hunters never extend their primary hands to or around people they don’t implicitly trust, as they would risk their sword or gun-wielding hand being damaged or removed by the enemy. Fake D has no such instincts, and thus his ambidextrousness is much more obvious than D’s.

Fake D’s fangs tend to be a little easier to see, but not by much. They’re still incredibly subtle when not under the effects of blood, and tend to look more like slightly-sharper-than-usual canines.

Their abilities (minus D possessing the carbuncle in his hand) and bodies are, otherwise, exactly the same; their clothing and weapons are also exactly the same, down to the general “layouts” of their utility belts and where they store certain weapons and tools. The moves and techniques they use in battle, the knowledge they possess of the Frontier and its history, a large chunk of their personalities—all identical. It’s incredibly important to note that fake D will almost always pretend to be the real D unless the person already knows who he is or somehow figures it out; he’s a very open book in a lot of regards beyond that point, but you have to be very mindful of not taking everything he says at face value, on the chance he may be attempting to deceive you for whatever reason.
