How People’s Porn Searches Change Around Thanksgiving

Porn searches are seasonal.

If you look at trends in porn searches throughout the year, you’ll see that they follow a predictable pattern of changes that reflect seasonal events and holidays. For example, there’s a peak in porn searches related to Santa Claus each year around the Christmas holiday. Similarly, porn searches related to passion, love, and romance increase each year on Valentine’s Day, while searches related to spooky porn increase on Halloween.

With another seasonal holiday coming up this week—Thanksgiving—are we likely to see that reflected in people’s porn searches, too? If history is any guide, yes.

According to data from the adult tube site Pornhub, searches containing “thanks” spike more than 600% on Thanksgiving day. What does “thankful” porn look like? I’m not entirely sure. People who are extra appreciative of their partners? I’ll have to do some research and report back.

Some of the other searches that rise significantly around the same time include “turkey,” “kitchen,” and “food fetish,” which suggests that all of that food people eat on Thanksgiving might be an aphrodisiac for some.

Beyond eating, other popular Thanksgiving activities also seem to make their way into people’s porn searches. For example, we see rises in searches for “NFL cheerleader” and “nude cheerleader,” perhaps because a lot of people are watching football games. There’s also an increase in “Black Friday” and “Wal-Mart” porn searches, too—further proof that human beings can find a way to sexualize virtually anything.

Lastly, searches for “pilgrim,” “Pocahontas,” and “Native American” rise as well, which tells us that there seems to be a racial and colonialist bent to some of the porn searches taking place on Thanksgiving.

One caveat to all of these findings is that Pornhub doesn’t report what the average number of daily searches is for each of these terms—they just report the percentage increase in searches above the daily average. If the average level of these searches is very low to begin with, then even an increase of more than 600% might not amount to that many searches. So while the data reported here are fascinating, we should be cautious about concluding that Thanksgiving-related porn searches are widespread until more data are released.

So why do patterns of porn searches appear to change throughout the year in ways that are tied to major events and holidays? 

One potential explanation is that people tend to grow tired of sexual routines—we need continued sexual novelty in order to keep our libidos revved up. Just consider that if people watch the same porn clip every day for a week, they tend to become less aroused with each viewing; however, when people are shown varied erotic clips instead, they tend to maintain higher levels of arousal over time [1].  

This phenomenon is known as the Coolidge Effect and it helps to explain not just why porn searches vary so much throughout the year, but also why novelty is one of the keys to maintaining passion in a long-term relationship. 

In short, if you search for Thanksgiving-related porn this week, you’re apparently not alone. And if seasonal porn is your thing, we probably have a pretty good idea of what you’re going to be searching for in December.

How People’s Porn Viewing Habits Have Changed During Quarantine

Much has been said and written about how pornography use has changed during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, including on this blog (see here). However, almost all of the information we have so far comes from what a few big tube sites (like Pornhub) are reporting. While the insights they provide are certainly tantalizing, selectively reported data from a handful of companies only offers a partial picture of what’s actually happening in people’s bedrooms right now. 

Some of my colleagues and I at The Kinsey Institute are in the midst of researching how this pandemic is affecting people’s sexual and romantic lives (click here if you’d like to participate and learn more about the study), and our preliminary data tell a complex and interesting story about how this situation is affecting people’s porn usage.

We asked extensive questions about porn use in one of our waves of data collection, and here’s what we found. 

First, we asked people how their porn viewing habits had changed recently. About 24% of our participants said they don’t watch porn, so of the remaining three-quarters who do, here’s how they answered this question:

·  4.4% said they’re watching a lot more porn

·  18.3% said they’re watching a little more porn

·  42.2% said they’re watching about the same amount of porn

·  18.6% said they’re watching a little less porn

·  16.5% said they’re watching a lot less porn

Put another way, a majority of our participants (58%) said they’ve experienced some change in usage, with about 1 in 4 viewers saying they’re watching more, and about 1 in 3 saying they’re watching less. So while porn usage has certainly increased for some, the overall trend is actually toward less consumption right now.

On average, participants said had watched about 2 hours of porn in the last 2 weeks; however, there was substantial variability across persons, and this average is inflated by a small number of participants who said they were watching a lot more porn than everyone else. 

About two-thirds of our sample reported watching an hour or less of porn in total in the last 2 weeks (i.e., 1 hour per week on average). However, about 2% of our sample said they watched at least one hour per day during the same time frame, and 1% said they were watching more than 4 hours per day.  

In addition to changes in overall usage, there were several other changes in porn behavior reported. For example, 9.3% reported that they viewed a new type of porn that they’d never seen before. We asked participants to describe what new kinds of porn they watched, and there wasn’t just one thing people were going for.

For example, some participants said they watched gay/lesbian porn for the first time, while others reported watching BDSM, group sex, kink/fetish, incest, or other types of porn, including erotic fanfiction (which some people count as porn, but others do not).

Interestingly, despite all we’ve heard in the media about coronavirus-themed porn popping up on tube sites, few people said they’ve seen any. Just 2.4% of participants said they watched COVID-related porn during the pandemic.

Some are also visiting new porn sites now, too: 9.6% of participants said they visited a new site they’ve never been to before. 

However, people appear to be going for free porn over paid porn—just 1.2% of participants said they purchased a new subscription to a porn site. 

What we can see from all of this is that there’s vast individual variability in terms of what is going on with respect to porn viewing habits. While the overall trend is toward less consumption, some people are watching more porn than usual��and, of those who are, many of them appear to be mixing it up by watching new kinds of porn and/or visiting new sites.

Долбанные совки –это советскосоюзные люди. Все эти стукачи, палачи, первачи и другая подобная мразь с одной стороны и конформистская мразь, допустившая стукачество, палачество и первачество с другой стороны. Все они убийцы, но не было и нет всеобщего чувства стыда, поэтому и живём почти так же погано, как и они, долбанные нераскаянные совки. До этого так же погано жили и в Великой России (не стоит пассеистично обманываться на этот счёт), но долбанных россиян я пока не нарисовал. А ведь благодаря им случился Совок. Наверное, мы тоже убийцы, чьи-то убийцы (кто-то и сегодня продолжает угрожать, унижать и убивать по-гулаговски, а кто-то продолжает так же молчать, бояться, не бунтовать, не приходить на помощь и Ñ‚.д. и Ñ‚.п. – как ментально принято). Но и нам не стыдно – примера проживания стыда и раскаяния –то от предков мы не получили. Ни от царско-рабских, ни от совковых, ни от нынешних демократическо-управляемых. Поэтому человеческих лиц мои совки не имеют – не заслужили. Да и уже не заслужат. Не- совки сгинули или уехали, а совки продолжают доживать здесь, в «перезагруженном» СССР. Ð’ принципе что совки, что ни совки, а россияне, например, – разницы нет. Менталитет-то пока больной, не лечащийся, неизменный, рабский. Наверное, не у всех подряд, но почему-то «подряд» - повсюду, а «ни подряд» как всегда где-то не здесь. То ли в мечтах, то ли в подполье. Цитатка из моего: «Когда Россия узнала, что ее в Саратове разоблачили как Ад на Земле (а вовсе не Рай!), она очень гневалась. Как!? Теперь Аду на Земле придется перепрятывать все концы, по-новому запутывать своих обитателей!? Что-то вообще делать!? Было же так славно лживо паскудно подло трусливо погано мерзко глупо скучно конформно патриотично верноподданно православно лицемерно ханжески духовно молчаливо социально асексуально б��µÐ·Ð»ÑŽÐ±Ð¾Ð²Ð½Ð¾ смертельно пусто –и на тебе, сранный Саратов так подосрал! Все раскрыл, все увидел, все описал. Кто это там конкретно сделал!? – «Я это сделал! Конкретно!» БУДЬТЕ ВЫ ПРОКЛЯТЫ, ДОЛБАННЫЕ СОВКИ!
