The temple at Wat Phnom, the birthplace of a capital city

Wat Phnom Daun Penh (Khmer: វត្តភ្នំ; "Mountain Pagoda" of Lady Penh) is a Buddhist temple (wat) located in the former Center in the capital Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The hill was built in CE 1372, and the foundation of the temple stands 27 metres (88.5 ft) above the ground. It is the tallest religious structure in the city.

The statues in the hollow tree

It contains a shrine with four Buddha Statues. They where found hidden in a hollow tree floating down the Tonle Sap River after a storm.

They were accompanied by a statue of Vishnu, one of the main deities of Hinduism. The Vishnu statue got its own shrine slightly lower than the main pagoda.

It was an elder, wealthy widowed lady Penh who was said to have discovered the hollow tree. The artificial hill was built on property donated by her, and was called "Penh's Hill", Phnom Penh in khmer.

The hill and the pagoda still have an outlook to the Tonle Sap River.

The wood from the hollow tree formed part of the temple structure. The full name of the pagoda complex was given the name of Wat Preah Chedey Borapaut.

The formal and the popular

The city founded on the completion of the pagoda in 1374 got its name from the fortunate lady and her hill, and the blessed pagoda.

In the year of the snake CE 1437 it is said King Ponhea Yat ordered His Excellency Decho Srei to raise the mount even higher when he finished building the new Royal Palace in the new capital city chosen 1434. The first king of Kampuchead named the capital Krong Chaktomok Mongkol.

But the name Phnom Penh was informally kept throught the centuries, when the capital city changed location several times. It became the formal name when the capital city finally was declared to be Phnom Penh in 1865.

The prominent stupa immediately west of the sanctuary contains the ashes of the king and his royal family.

På en liten høyde med utsikt til Tonle Sap-elva, kalt Penhs høyde etter den opprinnelige eieren madam Penh, ligger pagodaen Wat Phnom Daun Penh.

Statuene i treet

I følge legenden fant den velstående enkefru Lady Penh en hul trestamme flytende i elva etter en storm i 1372. I hulrommet var det fire bronsestatuer av Buddha, og en steinstatue av Vishnu, en av de viktigste gudefigurene i hinduismen.

Lady Penh, khmer Daun Penh, fikk innbyggerne i den daværende landsbyen til å bygge en høyde på hennes grunn og et tempel på toppen nær hennes hjem med utsikt til elva. Wat Phnom, på khmer វត្តភ្នំ; "Hill Temple", ble bygd av det hule treet for å romme Buddha-statuene. Litt lenger ned er det et mindre mindre alter med Vishnu-statuen.

Selve alteret med de fire buddhastatuene har navnet Wat Preah Chedey Borapaut.

Høyden er 27 meter høy. Tempelanlegget med stupaen rager 46 meter totalt. Hele Wat Phnom-arealet med park, statuer, munkeanlegg og altere er på 8 hektar. Det er den høyeste religiøse bygningskonstruksjonen i Phnom Penh, "Penh's Høyde", som var ferdig i 1374. Fra dette året regnes også Phnom Penh by som grunnlagt.

Hovedstad i det nye kongedømmet

I 1434 falt khmer-imperiet i Angkor Thom sammen etter nederlag i en krig mot den tidligere vasallstaten Siam. Den siste herskeren over khmer-imperiet var kong Ponhea Yat, og han flyttet hovedstaden i det nye kongedømmet Kampuchea til Phnom Penh. Byen ble omdøpt til Krong Chaktomok Serei Mongkol.

Den store stupaen rett ved siden av Wat Phnom inneholder asken til kong Ponhea Yat (ពញាយ៉ាត) og hans nærmeste kongelige familie fram til 1494.

Gjennom de neste 400 årene var Phnom Penh hovedstad flere ganger, men enkelte konger skiftet hovedstad avhengig av sikkerhetsutfordringer og trusler. Og av personlige preferanser.

Siden 1865 ble Phnom Penh fast hovedstad under kong Norodom.

She took a piece of wood to scrape off the mud and in the hole of the Koki tree, there were four Buddha statues made of bronze and brass and one made of marble. Another statue was in the form of Vishnu with the hands holding a staff, a chain, a snail, and a lotus flower. Doun Penh ask the villagers to help retrieve the Koki tree and receive the four treasures. Later, Doun Penh assigned the villagers to build a hermitage on top of a small mountain and to place the four statues there as a place of worship. The Ponhea Yat (ពញាយ៉ាត) stupa at Wat Phnom Ponhea Yat was the last ruler of the khmer empire and the first king ruling Cambodia from Phnom Penh. 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝟳 𝗢𝗙 𝟯𝟭 Wishing I could go back to this beautiful temple right now. Most tourists don’t really enjoy temple tours but I do. It makes me appreciate the different beliefs of every culture and makes me respect the religion of every nation. In case you are wondering what are those structures in the grand staircase, those are the lions and naga (snake) balustrades guarding it. According to legend, the first pagoda on this site was erected in 1373 to house four statues of Buddha deposited here by the waters of the Mekong and discovered by a woman name, Penh. °kuil diatas bukit Penh° Mengunjungi tempat ibadah yang notabene bukan tempat ibadah keyakinan sendiri adalah salah satu jalan untuk menyadarkan diri bahwasanya bukan cuma keyakinan kita saja yang ada di dunia ini. Ada agama² dan keyakinan² lain yang seharusnya saling menghormati. Kuil ini bertengger diatas bukit dengan pepohonan rindang plus suara burung. Dulunya, empat patung Budha terhanyut oleh arus sungai Mekong ditemukan dan disimpan disini oleh seorang perempuan bernama Penh. Suasana ketika berada di dalam kompleks kuil ini tenang dan damai. Meskipun terletak di jantung kota Phnom Penh, kawasan ini cukup sunyi dan damai. Berkeliling kompleks kuil hingga matahari terbenam adalah pilihan yang tepat, sembari menantikan lampu² di kuil menyala. Cuma ya harus bersabar menunggu langit berubah gelap di waktu musim panas yang panjang dimana sampai jam 6 sore pun masih cerah dan terang. Yah ga ada salahnya duduk² di bangku taman atau melihat jam raksasa di bagian taman bawah.
