TOP 5 MUST-VISIT PARKS IN CHENNAI
Tumblr media
Chennai is the Fourth-Largest metropolitan city in India, with a unique blend of history and modernity. Global change in pollution due to the growth in industries and vehicles has directly changed Chennai.
To counter global warming, Chennai is developing greenery. As of 2020, there are 525 parks in Chennai. The city's greenery has increased through forests, wetlands, canals, and lakes.
This greenery act as a buffer against pollution. It also provides locals and tourists a glimpse of nature in the urban jungle. Let us explore the must-visit five parks in Chennai with your family, friends & love.
Anna Zoological Park (aka) Vandalur Zoo
Guindy National Park
Tholkappia Poonga (aka) Adayar Ecopark
Chetpet Eco Park
Semmozhi Poonga
Aringar Anna Zoological Park (aka) Vandalur Zoo
Aringar Anna Zoological Park (AAZP) is an enormous garden in Chennai. Approximately 30Km away from Chennai 0Km. The first Zoological Park for the public in India (1855).
This park is in the Vandalur reserve forest, one of the largest public parks in India. Around 1500 acres, this park provides shelter to 471 animals, 1820 birds, and 413 reptiles. In short, it is a house for 2704 species of animals, birds, and reptiles.
It also preserves endangered species such as White Bengal Tiger.
Apart from enjoying the animals, birds & reptiles, this place is the best place to sit back and relax. If you want to walk across the park, take it slowly as I don't want you to get tired sooner.
Location: Vandaluru
Official Website: www.aazp.in
Google Map: Aringar Anna Zoological Park
Guindy National Park
Chennai is the only city in India to have a National park within the city limit. Guindy National park has a history dating back to the seventeenth century, at the beginning of the British colonization of India.
Over centuries, this forest zone in Chennai got buildings for government purposes such as Raj Bhavan and Educational institutions such as the Indian Institue of Madras.
Otherwise, what should have been a five square kilometers (5Km²) range of forest is today two point seven zero square kilometers (2.70Km²). This National park has The Children's Park and Snake Park.
This National Park ecosystem protects 14 species of mammals and 150 species of birds. For the modernized Chennai city, it helps to battle global warming and balance air pollution.
Location: Guindy
Official Website: NIL
Google Map: Guindy National Park
Tholkappia Poonga (aka) Adayar Ecopark
The Adyar Eco Park is at the backwater system filled with lush green and houses many sea birds & marine life. Most of the Chennai City people, including people living around this eco-park, are unaware that such a park exists in their vicinity.
Having an Eco-park amid a busy city and near the beach is a wonder. I believe such a small area of nature (58acre) element is why Chennai Metropolitan has not yet reached the heights of Delhi Metropolitan in terms of air pollution.
Tholkappia Poonga EcoPark is not like any other park in Chennai. It has age restrictions, and I recommend it is always good to read the Do's and Don't before visiting this park.
This Eco-park has a fee structure to access it. It starts from Rs. 20 for one-time visitors up to Rs. 5000 for a yearly subscription. Earlier it had limited access. Now, they have been granted access for a daily visit.
Location: Raja Annamalai Puram (aka) RA Puram
Official Website: www.chennairivers.gov.in
Google Map: Tholkappia Poonga
Chetpet Eco Park
Tamil Nadu Fishery Development Corporation Limited governs it with sport fishing in Chennai City's heart. Considering the location, it is an oasis for greenery and fitness lovers.
Some years ago, this lake was just nothing. This lake was used as a fishing hatchery and mostly lack with the kind of maintenance it deserved. But now, It is one of the most visited spots in Chennai.
As I mentioned, its location makes it a must-visit place. The activities like fishing in the lake and boating give you a feel-good experience, especially when you have busy City life waiting outside its premise.
Location: Chetpet
Website: www.fisheries.tn.gov.in
Google Map: Chetpet Ecopark
Semmozhi Poonga
Semmozhi Poonga or Semmozhi park is a botanical garden located in the busiest location of Singara Chennai. It is a must-visit place and a famous relaxing place for City people.
It is more loved by family members, young lovers & photographers. You can always see people are carrying cameras, practicing or experimenting with new camera methods, and young filmmakers studying their techniques.
It is one of the very few places for youngsters to hang out, and happening place for them in Chennai. I have seen a movie shooting taking place inside this garden.
It is spacious for jogging and walking lovers. If you need a piece of silence, you can reach this spot. If you need to read a book, you can come here.
Location: Teynampet
